The Idiot Girl and the Flaming Tantrum of Death Reflections on Revenge, Germophobia, and Laser Hair Removal by Laurie Notaro
In The Idiot Girl and the Flaming Tantrum of Death, she experiences the popular phenomenon of laser hair removal (because at least one of her chins should be stubble-free); bemoans the scourge of the Open Mouth Coughers on America’s airplanes; welcomes the newest ex-con (yay, a sex offender!) to her neighborhood; and watches, against her own better judgment, every Discovery Health Channel special on parasites and tapeworms that has ever aired–resulting in an overwhelming fear that a worm the size of a python will soon come a-knocking on her back door.

Im actually looking forward to reading this book. i figure we can discuss this book by chapters, so that we dont have to finish the whole book in order to discuss this. Although if there are any "spoilers" which is doubt in this type of book, please mark them.

I'm going to start this book in the next few days after I finish the book I'm on. It's a new release of a series that I'm following, its the only time I don't read multiple books.

So I'm only a chapter in but loving this chic. I could so see myself imaging that some weird group of ppl are secretly bandits.

Should be any day now. It was supposed to be here yesterday. Grrr.

Mary (med401) | 234 comments I finally got some time to read a little. It looks like I'm going to be the dissenter here. I've read the first three. In the first one I just wanted to slap her. She finds herself much more amusing than I do.

Well maybe you will like Watership down better. I'm actually enjoying the majority of this book. I did find the chapter that equated beautiful women to heroin kinda boring but that's it. Her dream about her vagina falling out had me cracking up. I could see myself having a dream like that. For example I had a dream last night that I was working in a restaurant that killed ppl and chopped them up for food. I could even hear the machine gun firing in the back alley while I served human a la mode. Ofcourse I then woke up realizing the gun fire was actually my box fan rattling away.

message 11: by Katt_goddess (new)

Katt_goddess | 267 comments Notaro reminds me of 'joke' rants in Rants, where the ranting is real enough for the situation but it's done in as humorous a prose as possible. I've read most of her books pre-marriage but haven't read the "Autobiography of a Fat Bride" so this one is really the first one I've read after she got married. As such, the first chapter does seem to run long for the usual. Still entertained though. :D

Also, I don't think I'll ever be able to look at pink windsocks without snickering now.

Mary (med401) | 234 comments I've made it to page 53 and I did laugh once. I have to admit that. The sentence on page 43 about Kenny wanting to party made me laugh. Cuz I have a sick sense of humor. I see where you guys can think she's funny, it just doesn't strike me that way. I'll read some more, maybe I'll like it better later.

Edit: Now I'm on page 72(I can only take a little at a time). I've figured out part of what bothers me so much about her. She whines. So much. About everything. She hates Phoenix yet has lived there her whole life. That's also part of it. I lived in Mesa(basically Phoenix) and loved it. If she hates it so goddamn much why did it take her husband to move her? I can hardly wait to read her whining about Oregon.

Omg they need a warning before the chapter I just read. Totally blindsided by it.

Mary I think I like her so much because I can relate to her. She has fat girl humor, where you've always had to make things pseudo funny just to deal with the fact that the world sees you a bit different. I get it cause its the same type of self deprecating sense of humor I have about myself and my life.

message 16: by Mary (new)

Mary (med401) | 234 comments I understand the fat girl humor, I've bounced around weight wise myself. You should see what 21 weeks in the hospital does to your ass. And I've been on steroids(ever wanna get really fat, try prednisone) It's not pretty. Hospital food has too damn many carbs and calories. Anyway, I'm not sure what it is totally, she just hits me wrong.

Trust me I get that. There are some ppl that you just don't find funny. For me its the entire cast of SNL despite the fact everyone but me finds that show still funny. Oh and once she moves to Oregon she doesn't complain about it.

I just finished the book and all I can say is "towel porn"

Let me guess "Ready or Not" ?

Warned people in the suggestion thread about that one. Don't read it if you have to do anything that requires a level of composture in public shortly after. I made the mistake of thinking it was just like all the other chapters and was reading it while waiting for the manager to show up and unlock the store for me. Then I just wanted to go home and sit in the dark with a pink collar.

Yeah I'm glad I decided to read some last night cause that's when I read it, if not I would have read that chapter while getting new tires. Which would've been very embarrassing. But yeah I wanted to hug my puppy that I got from the pound. He claimed me and there was no going back.

message 20: by Mary (new)

Mary (med401) | 234 comments Yes, that one made me cry cuz that's just how I am. I would have been really upset with the vet as well. For not waiting for me. I understood that.

Good grief by the time my copy arrives everyone will have finished reading this book. :(

message 22: by Katt_goddess (new)

Katt_goddess | 267 comments No fears, it's a quick enough read [if the humor grabs you].

I honestly would have had it read in a single day if I hadn't been using it specifically for reading material while waiting at the store.

message 23: by Mary (new)

Mary (med401) | 234 comments I'm reading it during commercials in tv shows I'm watching and I can usually finish a chapter in a long commercial. So don't worry Nora. Plus individual chapters can be discussed(like Dian said), so it'll be easy for us go go back to where you are when you're ready.

message 24: by Dian, Crazy Nooooob Mod! :D (new)

Dian | 440 comments Mod
Yeah it is a real quick read, I would've finished it within two days butt I held off reading all of it so I could have something to read while I got my car worked on.

message 25: by Mary (new)

Mary (med401) | 234 comments I finished. I do have to say that I laughed again before the end of the book. The talent show amused me. The food talk from the same chapter just grossed me out. Not the eating part, the other parts, you guys know what I mean. Gah.
I'm not sorry or annoyed I read this(like some books I've wasted time on), it just won't make me seek out her other work.

message 26: by Katt_goddess (new)

Katt_goddess | 267 comments So...you laughed before the end of the book but not at the end-end? :P Towel? :P :D

message 27: by Mary (new)

Mary (med401) | 234 comments Well, I could see both points of view on the towel. If the cabin boys were making a advance they missed out. If they were saying the girls reminded them of walrus, Ha! Really I think it was an innocent thank you. It just happened to spark her dirty mind.

message 28: by Katt_goddess (new)

Katt_goddess | 267 comments No, it was a totally innocent thank-you - towel-igami is a pain in the arse to do which is why it's usually seen in the fancier rooms on cruise ships as opposed to every single room [otherwise one of those things would have already been in the cabin when they first moved in]. I just thought it was funny that she immediately went the dirt route on it and even took multiple pics of it. :D

And yeah, I'm one to talk. I'm always on the look-out for things that made it through the buyers process all the way to the store floor that really shouldn't be there. That's how I got Happy Scarecrow [a little decorative fall scarecrow sitting on a pumpkin...that also happens to have a very long stemed flower growing straight through the crotch of his pants] , Nipple Ghost [a ceramic ghost holding a crow in one hand and pinching his nipple area with the other], and a wall sign with dice on it and little captions on the corners saying "Blow Me For Luck" . :D

Oye well I will read it, if it ever shows up. I think my neighbor stole the package. At least they are resending without recharging but it pisses me off.

message 30: by Mary (last edited Jul 30, 2011 09:29PM) (new)

Mary (med401) | 234 comments My sympathies. I have shifty neighbors. I always worry when anything gets left in my entryway. I'm missing a book as well but I doubt they read(too busy having screaming drunk fights in the yard at 3 am), so it probably just got lost.

Katt: Your tchotchke collection sounds so much better than mine.

Well so far I haven't laughed. On page 53 now. I hope it gets better soon or I may give up.
Well I finished, sadly laugh free. She whines way to much for me!! While I have never been to Phoenix I did live in Oregon for 3 miserable, hateful years. I hated it so much I left. hmm, amazing how in the US a person can do that.. lol. I'm with Mary on this one, if the woman hated Phoenix so much why didn't she just LEAVE??
Now if you ever want to hear/read the 'New years at Denny's in nowhere Oregon with a flaming queen'. Let me know. ;p

actually when i went on a cruise back in 05 I got towl animals every night, and i had just a single interior room. nothing special expect to sleep and change in. I actually still have all my pictures of the different towel animals.

I have to agree with Nora in the fact that I probably wont search out any of her other work, despite the fact that I laughed through a lot of it. It really was just one of those things that if you're in the mood for it, its a good easy read. But ofcourse this is also the first book I've read of this type where it was personal commentary on their lives, ect. So i can't really judge it based on anything else in the same vein of writing.

Wow, must have been a nice one [or they were bored :D ]. I've known a few people who went on cruises with the nothing-special rooms and they maybe got one to none artistic towel-wads.

And it's still a pain in the arse.
I canz makes a snake. :D Or an earthworm. Or a maggot [if it's a washcloth]. :D

Well I went through a tour(it was a goth cruise) so that might have something to do with it, cause all of us got one. We use to compare the ones we got. But i dont know about the other passengers. They did a lot of special stuff for our group, like block off certain areas for our parties and stuff like that. So maybe that was part of the perks. And they looked hard to do, i never undid mine, i just put it on the dresser, and took pictures of the new ones every day.

I have read other books of this style, Dave Berry(sp?) comes to mind & he's funny imo. I just didn't find this womans delivery or chosen topics amusing.

message 37: by Dian, Crazy Nooooob Mod! :D (new)

Dian | 440 comments Mod
True, i guess it really just depends on personality and taste. I agree that not all the topics she covered I found interesting, however I did laugh more than groan or become bored. Thankfully most of her chapters were short so if you didn't find it amusing it didn't take long to get past.
