Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 2192 comments That does not help!LOL

Why don't you take a look at my yaoi shelf and tell me which one you're curious about. I'll tell you what i thought of it, because i have yet to import my reviews for most mangas.

Unless you can tell me what kind of story you want...a shy/virginal uke? An agressive/Dominant Seme? Equally butch and manly uke and seme? Older couples? May/December couple?

Love Pistols, Volume 1? That is one in a category all on its own.LOL

message 153: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments umm i like my some D/s dynamics...clos-ish in age to each other - like no more than 4-7 years - does that help?

message 154: by Rossy (new)

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 2192 comments That does help, when do you need it by, because i'm going to dig for it....goddess know when i'll be back for air, once i'm in the hunt, since i get distracted easily.LOL

message 155: by Mandy (new)

Mandy (mandypants) Thanks, Rossy! I'll put both on my TBR pile and buy them in my next book shopping trip.

message 156: by Rossy (new)

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 2192 comments Wow that was quick Finder Series, Volume 1: Target in the Finder seems to fit the bill...the others i found, i'm kind of afraid to recommend because they are DARK.LOL

message 157: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments lol...feel free to pm me if you want - i like Dark...hehe

message 158: by Rossy (new)

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 2192 comments *Gathering some recs and sending you pm*

message 159: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments i just added Target in the Finder to the Amazon cart...lol, even though it was clear as day in the description that there was non-con in this, someone gave it a 1 star...really...

message 160: by Rossy (new)

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 2192 comments LOL! Some people just can't take it. BTW, you'll probably end up buying the rest of the books....LOL

Vi | 2813 comments Rossy wrote: Glad you like. I need to update it though, i tend to forget to do that with the manga i read since sometimes am waiting for chapter releases. TBoTWG is one that i need to catch up on the series. I read a few volumes, but love triangle was grating on my nerves.LOL "

I second that about the TBoTWG. But the art is just so.. amazing. There are many many manga/manhwa that I read just for the art. They are so so beautiful. And I need to update the stuff I've read.

Rossy wrote: "In that case, join me in the torture called Skip Beat!, Vol. 1.."

Rossy, that's pure evil of you. It's on-going and pure pure torture.

message 162: by Rossy (new)

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 2192 comments LOL! Couldn't help myself Vi.

I wish someone would join me in the torture call Love Mode Vol. 1. I love this series and have lost count on how many times i have done a re-read, but every now and then i need its comfort!

message 163: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments I just added Love Mode to the cart...am I going to hate you Rossy ;)

message 164: by Rossy (new)

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 2192 comments Hey, anything to get you to suffer along with me! LOL
Luckily all 11 volumes were released years ago, which is the only saving point for Tokyopop. Something i can't say about the other mangas they have left up in the air.

It's worth it though if you're looking for good romance. Can't recall when it was licensed though, but the original japanese art for the first book, was a bit dated. Either it improved on the second, or i got used to it...LOL

message 165: by Vi (new)

Vi | 2813 comments Oh, I hate TokyoPop. They dropped off GetBackers Volume 1 at 27 volumes. The total number was somewhere at 39, I think. I love, love Getbackers. Now, I'm waiting on the scanlators. I think they should be able to finish it soon. Thank god for them.

I'm going to check out Love Mode too. I had a manga shop nearby where I could borrow manga and they introduced me to a lot of manga. Too bad they closed down. I miss them.

message 166: by Rossy (new)

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 2192 comments The only manga shops i have ever been are the ones in Erurope, and of course Korea and Japan when i visited. This is NY but i have yet to find one!LOL

As for Tokyopop, they had me waiting for years on volume 8 for Platinum Garden, Volume 1. Thankfully the scanlators had already finished 7 volumes and i was able to get my hands on the rest in raw. Now another scanlator has picked it up and will be finishing it.

message 167: by Vi (new)

Vi | 2813 comments In Singapore, they have quite a number of manga shops - unfortunately, most of them stocks books which are translated into Chinese and not English. The manga shop I used to visit charged me 2 dollars per book for borrowing with deposit etc. As a student, this shop was perfect. Affordable mangas.

You can read Japanese? I'm soo jealous.

message 168: by Rossy (new)

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 2192 comments LOL! I can't read it, although i can speak and understand it moderately, thanks to my handy dandy expensive oral translator. I just look at the raws in order to follow the artwork, guess you can say i'm visual, because i can understand what will happen in later volumes just from that.

message 169: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments i knwo some basic japanese - would love to learn more - ditto with Arabic and of all the weird languages - Swedish or Norweigan

message 170: by Vi (new)

Vi | 2813 comments I used to do that.. Follow the artwork but I need to have the dialogues so that I can sigh over it :P

I can understand Japanese a bit because of watching all the dubbed animes. I don't like subbed that much because, somehow they replace some slangs (In Naruto, they replaced Dattebayo with something else).

Dee, I heard that japanese is difficult to learn to read, due to the different dialects. Is that true?

message 171: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments i think chinese is the one with different dialects...the problem with japanese is that there are 3 different alphabets that they use...hiragana, katakana and kanji...I think...one only has like 46 characters, and kanji has something like 500...

I remember how to ask what someone's phone number is - does that count?

message 172: by Rossy (new)

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 2192 comments Dee wrote: "i knwo some basic japanese - would love to learn more - ditto with Arabic and of all the weird languages - Swedish or Norweigan"

Arabic is my ideal language to learn. I have tried Greek, but it's so complicated!

I hate dub, because they sound so American, when i'm watching Japanese character speak.LOL
It also drives me nuts when the dub version translates some words weirdly.

message 174: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments i know some arabic - but not much - but we had iraqi guards where I was there on deployment and they would speak arabic to us if we wanted

It's so hard because after a while of looking at so many letters, they almost start to look the same.LOL

I don't know about Chinese, never cared to learn it, but i think Taiwanese would be easy to learn.

My most fluent language is Italian since i minored in it, and a bit of Portuguese because of a class in college.....not to mention they are somewhat similar to Spanish, so i can get by easily.

message 176: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments i can get by with French and know enough Italian to get myself into trouble...lol! I do much better speaking/listening vice reading however - I have been tempted to get one of the ellora's cave spanish books and read it

Jane (PS) | 24475 comments So with these Manga... Are they best purchased as an actual book? ebook? ...I still have to get my head around them.

I just checked my library - I thought I was onto something when my search on 'Target In The Finder' seemed to be working. I ended up with an amateur's astrology guide. No surprise - plenty of copies of that book on the shelf!

message 179: by Vi (new)

Vi | 2813 comments Oh wow, you guys know so many languages! I only know my native tongue(Tamil) and Hindi and English. I did take an intro german class in college but I couldn't continue it.

Most are in paperback format, but some are on ebook format....just not that many. This place emanga.com has some of those.

message 181: by Jane (PS), Moderator (last edited Sep 01, 2011 05:00PM) (new)

Jane (PS) | 24475 comments So do you buy paperback Rossy?

Perhaps I should check out a second hand bookstore first... Although over here - second hand is about as expensive as new unless you exchange...

message 182: by Rossy (new)

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 2192 comments I do buy the paperbacks, since my library doesn't carry any. I'm hoping that i'll be able to replace them on kindle no later than next year though....it's such a hassle when i have to replace my worn out copies!

message 183: by Rossy (new)

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 2192 comments Dee let me know when you get your Love Mode copy, i'm going to need a partner to binge on them! Everyday they keep taunting me the minute i walk in!LOL

message 184: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24475 comments I know they have done Dark Hunger (Carpathians) in manga. Would this be good to try, or should I go hard core for my first read?

message 185: by Fran, Moderator (new)

Fran | 12307 comments I bought this one today at Borders for 70% off- I have no idea how I did but I noticed you haven't read this one Rossy, and you're the manga woman, so I'm a little nervous.

Omamori Himari: v. 1 Omamori Himari v. 1 by Milan Matra

It looks humourous and it's sealed and says there is explicit content (hoping so!).

message 186: by Judithe (new)

Judithe | 392 comments I'm finally getting around to setting up my list, as RL has FINALLY slowed down.

But hit a snag...
"Pick 1 book that will fit each of these genres, using Romance as a sub-genre. "

This doesn't mean we have to read Romance in each genre, or does it?

message 187: by Fran, Moderator (new)

Fran | 12307 comments Hi Judithe!

No, you don't have to read any Romance if you don't want to. Just letting you know that Romance is considered a sub- genre, not a genre category of its own.

message 188: by Judithe (new)

Judithe | 392 comments That's what I was thinking! Thanks for confirming! List now (finally!) up!

Oh i have that one too, but don't recall if i added it to my shelf. That would be a good way to start if you want, but it's more like comic than "manga".....hard to explain, but think of the Spider Man cartoons vs. Inuyasha anime.

That's because i'm not a big fan of harem or shounen manga. I have only read a handful of them, since i need romance in my reading.

Somebody said you can expect this from that one: "Action (Violent action), Comedy, and of course FAN SERVICE!"

message 191: by Rossy (new)

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 2192 comments I should mention that there are tons of unlicensed mangas/manhwas that have been translated, which you can read online.

If you go here and do a search based on genre, selecting only mangas that have been unlicensed; then sorting the results by average rating, you'll find quite a few good ones:
http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.ht...

Of course, feel free to ask on any particular manga, most likely i have at least heard of it. I suggest once you click to read the blurb of a certain title, you take a look at the categories though. Because it warns about what kind of theme you'll encounter in the volume(s).

message 192: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24475 comments Thanks Rossy - you are a mine of information on this manga stuff! :)

I think I'll try my local second hand store sometime. I think I'd like to try with Skip Beat!, Vol. 1. ...Seems like classic manga...

message 193: by Rossy (new)

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 2192 comments Oh yeah, that one has good plot (although some may find a bit slow). The humor is the best though, i love to see the characters into chibis! It's still ongoing, but you have like 20+ volumes to catch up on.LOL

message 194: by Mandy (new)

Mandy (mandypants) So, I just got Nana, Volume 1 and I'm still waiting on Skip Beat!, Vol. 1 to come in.

Just a note to the other manga newbie, Jane. You start at the back of the book and read from right to left. It's like Arabic. I mean, it makes total sense when you think about it, but I wasn't expecting it.

LOL! Thanks for the heads up. I haven't made it to my proposed second hand store yet - let me know what you think of Skip Beat!, Vol. 1 Mandy! (The chances of that being in our second hand store is close to zero I suspect... *sigh*)

message 196: by Rossy (new)

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 2192 comments Forgot to mention that, i'm so used to it, that it feels like normal reading.LOL

Jane have you tried paperbackswap? Let me give it some thought and ask around with some friends, i think there is a site or two that you can use for manga swap....But you can also check with Amazon or B&N, since they also list the use copies. Some mangas are now available digitally, but there are not that many yet.

message 197: by Jane (PS), Moderator (last edited Sep 08, 2011 04:43PM) (new)

Jane (PS) | 24475 comments Thanks Rossy, I haven't tried anywhere yet - thought I'd go to the store next week when I am back in the 'big smoke'. If I can't get one there, I think my next best bet is probably Book Depository due to the free freight option. All those sites you suggest are in the US (I think) - once freight is added on, it is more expensive than BD. I know Skip is there for about $8.50.
