Hollie Adair | 26 comments The book really doesn't give us much to go on; however, I have a theory. I think Mr. P recognized the potential that Mary possessed and noted her outcome (living in her parent's basement doing nothing) and didn't want the same for Arnold. He recognized the same intelligence in Arnold and specifically sought him out to give him some advice. Maybe Mr. P did the same for Mary, maybe not, but I think the important part is what Arnold did with the nudge.
