Jessie | 71 comments Laurell's Blog indicated that she is prediciting the next Anita book will be at least 1000 pages!!!!

Can we all say Woo-Freakin'Hoo?????

:)

(Quoting LKH)

"I can turn all my attention to the next Anita book (hopefully we'll have a title next week). I'm over four hundred pages in, and I was feeling pretty good about it. Until I looked at my deadline. December. That's cool, I just needed to add up a page count, see where I was in the plot, and how much more to go. I may not always know the plot point by point, but I have a feel for the size and rythmn of a book by the time I'm this far into it. So, I sit down look at where I am, and realize, oh, I have about six hundred more pages to go. Yeah, you read that right, I fear, I really do, that this is going to be a thousand page book."

Cat Singh | 202 comments Flippin' AWESOME!!!!! This is the BEST news i've had all day!!! Thanks Jessie!!!

message 3: by Cat Singh (new)

Cat Singh | 202 comments and then:

I love Edward, and I hate him, because every time I add him to a book in a major way, it gets longer. I did the page count math and found that I need six pages a day, every day, from now until the end of December to even make a rough draft. That's not revisions. That's just sending the book raw and bleeding from the computer, straight to my editor. I began to panic.

This morning, as I type this, I am again realizing that to keep up the output that is needed for what I do; books, comics, and other projects, I am going to have to find ways to delegate more of my life to others. Or, have a nervous breakdown. That is always an option.

yay!!! Edward!!!!!! (donna pressure???)I LOVE it!!! Hmm.... i wonder if the kids are coming to town???

Don't have a nervous breakdown Laurell!!! I'll come cook you dinner and do your laundry (lord know with my house, i'm an expert) jus PLEASE say the book will be out in time!!!!

message 4: by Jessie (new)

Jessie | 71 comments LOL Cat.

I know right. Let's get a team of fans together and we can all come over and help out for a while. We can walk the dogs, handle the planning and dinner prep and laundry...Piece of cake!!!

Stacy | 191 comments Mod
I would do it We could all be busy little helper bees. 1000 pages that is soo freaking awesome. And Edward too I think she is spoiling us. I hope Jean Claude and Asher are in this alot more.

message 6: by Cat Singh (new)

Cat Singh | 202 comments Yes!!! please say it can be true!!! Edward, and lots of JC, and i have to say that Anita needs to have some Nathaniel time... their progress in The Harlequin was not seen in Blood Noir (yes i know it was Jason's book, but i think that was really great how they made some breakthroughs!!) And if we could get a little JC Asher action, that would be the cherry on top (if ya know what i mean...)

....and we would be her slaves forever and ever, if she would only never stop writing!!!!! (just kidding....but kinda not)

message 7: by Donna (new)

Donna | 22 comments I'm right there with you all---I'd LOVE to have a 1000 pages of Anita. Of course I'd be totally useless to everyone until I finished it, and I happen to be a slow reader. So, I guess I'd better have a lot of pre-cooked meals prepared for my son so he can fend for himself when that book comes out--(hee-hee!)

message 8: by mlady_rebecca (new)

mlady_rebecca | 278 comments Laurell just blogged. The next book is called "Skin Trade". Reminds me of the song by Duran Duran.

By the way, isn't this book 17 (counting "Micah", that is)?

message 9: by Jessie (new)

Jessie | 71 comments Yeah, I wasn't counting counting Micah :)

message 10: by Cat Singh (new)

Cat Singh | 202 comments Ooooooh! You think it has something to do with all of the beasts inside of Anita???

message 11: by Jessie (new)

Jessie | 71 comments Oh I thoroughly believe that is going to come full circle this next book. I wonder if she will ever have Anita shift????

message 12: by Donna (new)

Donna | 22 comments If LKH made Anita shift in her next book you all would hear my screaming from where ever you are..that would be so freakin' AWESOME!!! But what would Anita shift into? Or maybe she'd be like a true panware and shift into a bunch of different animals. In my head(and there's a whole lot going on in there sometimes...), I think she should be a panther first---just because that'll piss Richard off (hee-hee). But Richard being Richard will do something stupid and try to make her inner wolfie come out, and the tiger will emerge (to piss Richard off yet again---catching the theme yet?!). Then only when Jason gets into trouble she'll change into a wolf to help him out (thereby REALLY pissing Richard off, since he thinks it's all about him when it comes to the pack). Then the others can come out in the following book. That's the storyline in my head--whatcha think?

message 13: by Stacy (new)

Stacy | 191 comments Mod
I don't know If I want her to shift. I think that if she became a true lycae of some sort it would strain her relationship with Jean Claude and the rest of the vampires. I agree that something definetly needs to happen with all those animals inside of her. She needs to find a way to control them better. She can't keep having to have some sort of animal near her at all times. Maybe now that she has found a different way to feed the arduer she might have more control over other things in her life. Hmmmm I wonder what will happen. I agree with you guys though I think if she does have to turn into an animal a leopard is what I want her to turn into first. The title definetly suggests that maybe something like this will happen. If she does turn I also agree she is going to be a panware type of person. I bet she would save herself alot of pain if she finally just shifted, but I don't know if she has that final key in her to allow herself to fully shift. If she did fully shift she would have to block off some of Jean Claude's powers which could be very dangerous for Damien and Nathaniel. OH well I guess well see I am so excited about the 1000 pages. I bet it probably wont be exactly 1000 pages but its definetly going to be a long one yay!

message 14: by Cat Singh (new)

Cat Singh | 202 comments Ya, i'm not sure exactly how i feel about her shifting. I agree that the title makes you feel like it's going to happen, but it's sort of like... if she shifts into anything but a wolf, even if she's a panwere that includes a wolf, Richard (grrr) is going to try to cut her completely out of the pack. Even though he has his own Ardeur now, and is probably going to need Anita and JC's help with that, i don' think he could take letting her be Lupa/Bolverk and have the ability to shift into a non-wolf. JC i think would be happy because anything that will stabilize his power structure makes him happy. but i agree that Ahsre, damien, requiem etc.. will have issues with it. And i have to admit, i miss Anita the Animator/Necromancer. Ya, she will always have those powers, buti feel like the shifting has moved to center stage for her in the last 3-4 books. But...if she's going to shift (into one) please let it be leopard. and if she's ging to be a pan-were, go ahead and let her be a wolf first....we have enough Richard problems without antagonizing him further....

message 15: by mlady_rebecca (new)

mlady_rebecca | 278 comments I thought Jean-Claude said that if she shifted it would kill her, and probably the rest of the Tri(s). (Chapter 21 of "The Harlequin").

But if the rules have changed again, I can either see her shifting into a tiger first (because she'll be among tigers in Vegas) or a wolf (because the wolf seems to fight the cats the best).

message 16: by Stacy (new)

Stacy | 191 comments Mod
I think that if anyone could force her animal out of her it would be richard what with him being a dick and all. He would have another temper tantrum and thrust his power all over her like in the harlequin. I think Jean Claude totally needs to punish him. Get out the whips and chains jean claude. heehee he probably would enjoy that though. oh yeah Anita and Jason need to be punished somewhat publicly by Jean CLaude right. Hmmm that will be interesting. Is anita going to have another performance on the guilty pleasure stage. Hmmm that would be an awesome scene. Jean Claude punishing Jason and Anita. I bet Nathaniel would be begging to be there to.

Ok You know what I just found. Which has really nothing at all to do with this posting at all but I don't want to be silly and make a whole thread for this. THere is a group on Goodreads that is for people who only like Laurell's early work. Hold on let me get what they said exactly.

For all those fans out there of Laurell K. Hamilton's early work!
For all those fans out there that want the witty stories we first fell in love with!
For all those fans that need a place to vent our woes!
You have found your home!
We would love to see some fan fic! Let's show Hamilton what WE, as her fans, would like to read!

Mwahahaha I challenge them Mwahaha. I suck at being evil. Sigh. They challenge my mission statement they must be destroyed. I'm so petty.

message 18: by mlady_rebecca (new)

mlady_rebecca | 278 comments I love that this group is for those who still love and support the series as it is. I've never understood the people who grow disenchanted with a series, yet won't let it go. I've had series that grew to bore me, or went in directions I didn't like. I just stopped reading them. And unless asked directly, I basically stopped talking about them.

Laurell seems to have attracted a large group of people who won't let go of their delusions of where the series should have gone. And she's said, the more people tell her she's wrong, the more she will dig in her heels.

The ardeur won't be going away. The majority of the men won't be vanishing in the next book. The books won't go back to the time when Anita spent all her time catching preternatural bad guys with RPIT or killing vampires with Edward. They refuse to see that Anita has changed, has grown. She's not that same black and white person we met in "Guilty Pleasures".

It's equally amusing, to me, that the combination of erotica and preternaturals has spawned it's own little sub-genre. Some people love the new additions just as much as other people hate them.

I still think Laurell is the grand dame of the genre. And her "worst" book is still better than some authors' "best" book.

Stacy | 191 comments Mod
now that was just wonderful well said. I think one of those series that I just stoped liking and talking about was Susan Krinards series. Ah well. I feel bad for those people that don't get to enjoy the awesomeness that is Laurell K Hamilton. Oh well. I am so excited with skin trade coming up I love Edward And I hope there is alot of Jean Claude and Asher in it.

message 20: by Heather (new)

Heather (fantasy_mom) | 28 comments Definitely well-said mlady_rebecca... I agree, if you don't like the way a series has gone, then stop reading it! There are plenty of other fish (I mean books) in the sea, for goodness sake. It seems silly to continue to complain about something that you have complete control over: don't like the later novels? STOP READING THEM! And spare the rest of us from your negativity.... Oh, and I'm not pointing this at anyone in particular, just venting... ^_^

That being said, I'm thrilled at the prospect of 1000 pages of Anita-ness *stupid grin* CAN'T WAIT!

message 21: by Cat Singh (new)

Cat Singh | 202 comments The horror!!
I love this group.
It takes a REAL fan to realize that all of the things that happened in really just 3or 4 books were Anita changing metaphysically. All the sex, were really side effects. No one had issues with the descriptive gore in the early books right??? If you have issues, then this genre is obviously not for you. Anita is AWESOME and is only getting btter!!! 1000+pgs, lordy are we lucky!!!

message 22: by mlady_rebecca (new)

mlady_rebecca | 278 comments Thanks everyone. It's been a while since I did a big rant over people not understanding the later books in the series.

But a week or two ago I stumbled over a conversation where someone was reading the books, and was only up to "Bloody Bones", but was already passing on the message that "the later books are all porn", just because a friend had told her that. I found that incredibly presumptuous. If you're reading the books yourself, you certainly shouldn't be passing on someone else's preconceptions.

message 23: by Stacy (new)

Stacy | 191 comments Mod
I must admit though and I'm pretty ashamed to say this, but as a book seller I have steered younger readers away from Laurell's series. now by young I mean young like 12 or 13. There parents ask me if the series is apropriate and I have to tell them the truth. While I agree that the series is awesome for us super mature adults heehee I'm so not mature I just couldn't let a 12 or 13 year old kid read it. I guess it's up to them to sneak those types of books from a friends house like I did. Oh I am so ashamed I should be punished.

message 24: by Heather (last edited Sep 30, 2008 05:38AM) (new)

Heather (fantasy_mom) | 28 comments LOL! I was the same way... reading steamy historical romances under my covers with a flashlight in the middle of the night!

On the other hand, I totally agree with you, Stacy, young teens should not be reading about everything Anita or Merry does.... their time will come, and there's plenty of great youth fantasy novels out there to keep them occupied until they're ready for LKH. Don't be ashamed, I commend you :)

message 25: by Cat Singh (new)

Cat Singh | 202 comments Yes i agree. I started reading these books when i was 14, and the sex didn't come out in the books til i was a little older. But even then, after readingthe first raelly descriptive sex scene (like book 12?) i was kinda shocked, like "did she really just write that?!!??" It took me the second time reading through the whole series to appreciate the sex as a metaphysical thing sometimes. You definitely did the right thing Stacy, when they're ready, they'll find it anyway, nothing will be able to stop them. And really, if your parents are still picking out your reading material, that in itself says something about the maturity level of what you should be reading

message 26: by Heather (last edited Oct 01, 2008 05:45AM) (new)

Heather (fantasy_mom) | 28 comments I was going to suggest the Twilight series, but I wasn't sure exactly what sex, if any, was in them since I haven't read them yet. :)

message 27: by Christina (new)

Christina (honey1977) | 5 comments 1000 pages of Anita? Goddess I'm gonna love this one!
About children and LKH books-my son is only four so I'll still have some time until this "problem"'s gonna be ours. But even now he's very into ghoststories and everything paranormal like his mommy ;)! I think a book with sex-scenes is a less problem than actual teeny sex nowadays! So when Yanni celebrates his 13th birthday I'm gonna have "the big speak of practical sex and prevention of teenage pregnancy" with him- I'm afraid of this even now :)!
But after this talk I think I will allow him to read Anita as well...

message 28: by Cat Singh (new)

Cat Singh | 202 comments You are a brave mother! i will not be allowing my kids to read Anita (at least until i know for sure they already have experienced something). Now if they happen to pull it off of my shelf and read it on their own, hopefully they will be too embarassed to ask me any questions... cuz god i don't know if i could answer them....

message 29: by Stacy (new)

Yeah like, "Umm Mommy why is Anita Biting Nathaniel so much?"
or
"Umm mommy why is Jean Claude hitting nathaniel with the whip."
Heehee funny stuff.

crap monkeys laurell in her latest blog said asher wont play a hige role in this next book either. He isn't coming to las vegas with them poo nuggets. I hope hope hope Jean Claude is going.

message 32: by Lori (new)

Lori (moderatrixlori) Yea, that sucks about Asher. I was so looking forward to some scenes between him, Nathaniel and Anita. I get all hot and bothered just thinking about it! Okay...so I'm a perv.

message 33: by Cat Singh (new)

Cat Singh | 202 comments But she did say that Asher has been in her brain dying for some time, so hopefully the next book will have a lot of him... (fingers crossed)

message 35: by mlady_rebecca (new)

mlady_rebecca | 278 comments Yuck. I HATE the new covers, this and "Blood Noir". I know they said they are more appealing to guys, but I find them a big turn off. Without knowing the author, I would never pick up a book with a cover like that.

I know they say the body part covers are too racy for guys (and some girls) to read in public, but there has to be a compromise without going to the violent imagery. After all the books have become more sex and less violence, so why are the covers indicating the opposite transition.

That cover says horror to me, the kind of horror I avoid. The gore-fest type of stories.

I'd rather have a blank cover with just the title and author than something like that.

message 36: by Cat Singh (new)

Cat Singh | 202 comments yes, as soon as i saw it the cover did remind me of SAW (the scary movies) but i really don't mind. I DO like the sexy man covers, but i'm glad that they're not cheesy Fabio-type covers. I can see how they want to appeal to the male audience, (my husband LOVES Anita and Merry, and he thought the cover was cool) though saw blades make me wonder how much of this book will involve magic??? LKH's blog says that she's been working through a lot of metaphysical scenes, but the cover doesn't bring me the same feeling.

But honestly, i could care less about the cover... i can't wait for the 1000+ pages of Anita on the inside!!!!!!!!

Cat Singh | 202 comments i hope it means she changed he mind about killing whoever she said she had to kill and didn't want to. and happy news... she's "up to" 700 pgs of rewrite, so the book's gong to be much longer than that!! (i'm hoping for 1000...)

Just because it's out of town, I doubt we'll see much of Jean-Claude. I just hope Edward doesn't dominate the story, and she does bring along some of the semi-main characters.
