Robin (rreed) | 19 comments A forum with no rules, yet the discussion is civilized and thoughtful? Can this happen?

I am a writer, cartoonist, and bus driver, though I hope to shed the last part soon. On the other hand, I have been doing crappy day jobs for many years, why would I be able to live on my creativity now?

I have ebooks for sale under both my real name, Robin Reed, and a pen name, Robin Morris. The latter is for horror, the former for everything else.

Welcome, Robin.

I suspect that the discussion here is civilized and thoughtful precisely because we have no rules. I've noticed that on fora with close moderation, people are much ruder to me than they would be unprotected in the open, where I would destroy their self-confidence for the rest of their lives very shortly, because they expect the moderators to rush in and protect them. Doesn't the National Rifle Association say, "An armed society is a polite society"? Whatever the obvious untruth of that as regards firearms, in intellectual discourse it seems to have some value.

Better to be cursed with an interesting life than to die of boredom.

An interesting life makes for interesting books, surely? That's if you can find the time to write them!

Welcome to our little corner, Robin.

Hi Robin. Yes, a forum with no rules and good talk is the exception rather than the rule. We're all polite, sort of. Mostly :)

Matt Posner (mattposner) | 276 comments I was on Kindleboards forum and the mods constantly CONSTANTLY interfered with things that I posted. Merged and moved threads, etc. And k-boards was one of those places where anyone who got angry was immediately clobbered by everyone else who read the thread. I get the feeling this thread may go better. Nice to meet you, Robin. What kind of horror do you write?

message 10: by Robin (new)

Robin (rreed) | 19 comments Since there are no rules here in Robust, I guess I can tell you I have two horror titles. "Halloween Sky and Other Nightmares" is a short story collection, and "Mama" is a novel. For horror I use the pen name Robin Morris.

The Kindleboards is a commercial operation. The operators make money out of being Amazon associates. Like any store, they don't like the flow of trade being disturbed. The way to get along with them is not to notice that it is a kindergarten. Whatever the mods do, smile, say thank you, and assure them it was an improvement. You can't fight City Hall, so instead catch a free ride, because the upside is that on the Kindleboards the permitted self-promotion is pretty liberal, and they bend over backwards to help you promote your books effectively, for instance by reprogramming the sigs of those who haven't quite got the knack of HTML. Use Kindleboards as the founders intended, and keep your anger for ROBUST, where we'll either share it, or at least be amused by your passion -- but we won't chuck you out for it, or move your threads, or shut them down.

K.A. Jordan (kajordan) | 3042 comments I second that.

Robin (rreed) | 19 comments By they way, I recently added my middle initial to my name on Amazon, because a bunch of porn titles have appeared under the name Robin Reed. To find my books now please look for Robin. M. Reed.

Sharon Tillotson (storytellerauthor) | 1802 comments Why not post your links, Robin. Never mind, here they are: (still under Robin Reed)

Xanthan Gumm
Powers vs Power Book One
Powers vs. Power Book Two

message 16: by Robin (new)

Robin (rreed) | 19 comments Your link to Xanthan Gumm actually goes to "The Seeds of Time" by Fredric Jameson.
Actually, I forgot to make this change here on Goodreads to it will be the same as Amazon. I will do that.

message 17: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Tillotson (storytellerauthor) | 1802 comments Hmmm, I've heard of that happening before. Let's see if it's right this time.

Xanthan Gumm

message 18: by Robin (new)

Robin (rreed) | 19 comments Yes!

message 19: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Tillotson (storytellerauthor) | 1802 comments How do Amazon's bots make the leap from 'Seeds of Time' by Fredric Jameson to Xanthan Gumm by Robin Reed one wonders? I know that when I made the link, XG was listed and I clicked on it. Ahh, technology!

Those bots are plotting against you, Sharon. What did you do to them?

message 21: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Tillotson (storytellerauthor) | 1802 comments Nothing, yet. They must have been reading my mind...
