Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) How did you like The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake?

message 12: by Tanya (new)

Tanya (mrsreads) | 106 comments Hmmm...I feel like I read that so long ago, even thought it was only a few months, let me see...

I remember really enjoying the book while I was reading it. The writing was great, the characters interesting, and I liked where I saw the story going. I especially found the mother in the story to be a heart-wrenching character - wanting so desperately to please her family but getting so little joy in return. That's something that really spoke to me, both in my own life and in what I saw of my mother's life growing up.

Then, maybe about 2/3 of the way through the book, the story got weird. By the time I got to the end of the story, I remember being very disappointed with how quickly the story seemed to be wrapped up. I think maybe if I read it again I might like the ending more, but as it stands, it was a well written book that I just didn't get .

I hope that made sense! :)

This has been the rainiest fall we've had in a long time. I guess it goes with our rainy spring. Well, our rainy fall has continued into November where our first snowfall ended up being more rain than actual snow. I've managed to up my page count this month, despite being super busy at work and having two Thanksgivings and a family photo shoot this weekend. (I think I might still be traumatized by the holiday tees we all wore...) Anyway, I'm looking forward to Christmas and all of the books on my wish list!

I really enjoyed The Book Thief (I think I gave it 4 stars) - it was beautifully written with incredibly compelling characters. It wasn't a very linear story, with the narrator (Death) jumping around from the past to the future, but I never got "lost" in the timeline or found it very distracting. In fact, the matter of fact way in which the narrator announced horrific events and then proceeded to explain how they came about created more of a "gut-punch" kind of reaction to the events themselves. My only complaint was that it was so built up by others who had read it that I didn't feel that it lived up to the "It's the best book ever!" reputation that it's gotten.

The Perfect Storm was disappointing to me (2 stars). It jumped around quite a bit, and I just didn't like Junger's writing style. I would recommend Isaac's Storm: A Man, a Time, and the Deadliest Hurricane in History before I'd recommend this. Different hurricanes, but I think Larson is a better writer and it makes for a more compelling story. The biggest problem was that Junger couldn't really tell you what happened to the boat the "main characters" were on because it's not as though the fishermen knew ahead of time what was happening and their radios went down in the storm, so no one knows exactly what happened. He ends up writing mostly about the storm in general and what it did to other ships, and other ships in other storms, more than the actual "main characters" in the book.

Battle Hymn was pretty good (3 stars). As a mother, I found Chua's almost manic desire to make sure her kids were successful and ready for the world sympathetic, and her kids reactions to her are pretty funny. I don't think she was a great writer, though, and the book was choppy in places.

Let me know what you think after you read them! It's always fun to hear another perspective. :)

So Christmas came and went and I got all of the books on my wishlist, along with a gift card to Starbucks and some comfy slippers. My New Year's resolution is that all of these books will actually get read in 2012, so I intend to take the day off for my birthday in February (I think it's on a Wednesday this year), head out to Starbucks for my morning coffee, come home, and curl up in my favorite reading chair to enjoy! Happy New Year everyone!

After finishing a pretty lengthy challenge last year (100 tasks completed - whoo hoo!) I went on the literary equivalent of an ice cream binge and just read everything fluffy thing I could find on the 'New Release' shelf at my local library. After gorging myself on some historical fiction and cozy mysteries, I managed to settle down to some meaty nonfiction reads before the month ended. I also read the new science fiction release my husband gave me as my first book on the challenge he created for me this year. One down, nine more to go!

We went on vacation this month (I miss you, Mexico) so I got a lot of reading done despite having some trouble getting interested in some of my reading. My nonfiction count was up this month just due to the luck of the draw in terms of my library requests. I made myself take books I already owned with me on vacation though, so I successfully knocked out some of my home library to-read list, which always feels good. Now I can rationalize hitting up the library book sale for new reads. I'm such an addict... :)

This month has been crazy - I started seeing a personal trainer (not just because of the 24-hour buffet in Mexico, either), so I've been at the gym or running at the park six days a week. As much as I'd like to say I can listen to an audiobook on the treadmill, that would be a lie...I think I listened to the same chapter of The Door to December at least a half dozen times. I think I've read this book before, but at this point, I can't tell anymore... I need to pick up the pace for April.

So...remember when I said I need to pick up the pace? Yeah...that didn't actually happen. I apparently only managed to read five books this month (though, in my defense, the Martin book took forever!). Training is much harder than I thought it was going to be, and it's all I can do to keep my eyes open in the evenings. Oh, well. Better luck next month. :)

Wow. I'm not sure where the year went, but I promise I was reading...a little. I got laid off this summer and my husband and I decided that I was going to stay home for a while since this was my second job loss in three years - talk about a lack of job security! Strangely, being a stay at home mom didn't appear to mean that I had more time to read, so my numbers for the last half of the year don't look so good. Here's to hoping 2013 is a better year for my page count (and my posting regularity).

I am not exaggerating when I say it has rained here almost every day for the entire month. While my first impulse on a rainy day is to curl up under a blanket with a coffee and a book, my daughter's first impulse is to chase the dog around, making any serious attempts at reading difficult.
