17. Last Orders by Graham Swift

This book made me shed several tears, and any book that can make me cry automatically goes into the best reads of the year list. I highly recommend this book.

21. A Hard Day's Knight by Simon R. Green

if you're a fan of the nightside series, i think you'll be pleased with this installment. green does a really good job of developing john's character (especially when it comes to his gift) as well as suzie shooter's character.

i really like the nightside books that feature john walker. i have read the first book in the ghost finders series and it was horrible. i've also read drinking midnight wine, but i didn't like it as much.

I'm a fan of H.G. Wells, but if you are reading him for the first time, I would probably recommend The War of the Worlds or The Island of Dr. Moreau instead. I think those are better than The Invisible Man. I'm teaching a class on Victorian literature this semester and I'm having my students read some classic "monster literature" hence The Invisible Man.

Thanks for the tip. I'll have to see which one I can get at the audio book store since I think I will do better with the classics if I listen to them.
