Yvonne (ysareader) | 79 comments I read Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green several days ago which was half funny & half angsty depending on which writer's page you were on & all Tiny.

I'm currently reading Knight Errant by K.D. Sarge which is a fun science fiction book. I'm 40% in and really liking it.

Patricia Lynne (pjlauthor) I'm not sure if it's YA, or maybe geared towards older teens because of a bit of language and gore, but I just finished Warm Bodies. Next on my list might be Unnatural or the first Slayer Chronicles: First Kill

Patricia Lynne (pjlauthor) I debating once getting Halo, but decided against it. How are you liking it Meagan?

Ugh. Glad I haven't bought it then. Preachy and sexist, no way.

message 55: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Lynne (pjlauthor) Yeah, the thickness really turned me off because when I read, it's usually in one sitting (hate putting a book down unfinished) and I knew if I picked it up, I'd get nothing done.

I will definitely buy this one now. Since it did not pertain to me I wasn't planning on buying it. So thanks for the heads up about his donating the proceeds. What a geat idea and I will buy it today!

K.Z. Snow (kzsnow) You know, in gay-friendly environments like this one (and others in RL), it's sometimes hard to keep in mind how many kids out there are suffering in silence. Even in this day and age, there's more than enough BS in the world and more than enough ignorant, insensitive people eager to fling it around.

Kudos to Jeff for writing these stories and especially for his generous donation.

AT work this afternoon I was telling a co-worker about donating to Also Out Youth. You never know what kind of reception you will get when you bring up this subject so I was really surprised when she asked me about the organization and was really supportive. I had no idea how she leaned.

It's amazing how once a single straight person admits their support and then others suddenly open up about how they also support their gay friends and family.

I think sometimes straight people are afraid to put out there how they really feel about gays. I've decided I am going to bring up my support as often as I can, as long as the situation is such that it's the right time and place. Maybe more people will open up and offer their support if they know other straight people will back them.

Yeah, I've been trying to resolve to do the same. I do have the bumper stickers and such, but it's harder to do in person with people you work with. I'm fine with the strangers-on-a-bus situation (or on a plane) but less so at work. My bad, and I'll have to try harder.

I liked Will Grayson, Will Grayson fairly well. The funny parts were particularly good. Although it's not my favorite of David Levithan's books. The one I go back to time and again is The Realm of Possibility. The first and last prose poems in that book compose one of the sweetest teenage m/m love stories I've ever read, written in this lucid, spare, evocative language. And the characters in between weave a full spectrum slice of teen angst. Love that book.

Amanda Corlies (amandacorlies) | 109 comments I loved Invincible! Just finished it a week or so ago. I guess I just love the humor in there. Nick's attitude and sarcasm just crack me up.

Yvonne (ysareader) | 79 comments I'm currently reading Unnatural Unnatural (Archangel Academy, #1) by Michael Griffo which I like so far.

I noticed a couple reviews where people were shocked this was a gay story because it was shelved YA fantasy/sci fi/paranormal and not in GLBT, and the back of the book doesn't say anything about this.

I did read the book cover and they're basically right. This is what it says relating to the love interest, Ronan: "At Archangel Academy, Michael belongs, and in Ciaran, Penry and especially Ciaran's enigmatic half-brother Ronan, Michael finds friendship deeper than he's ever known."

Is this deceptive? Friendship is a lot different than love interest. Should the back cover of a book be upfront about it being a gay story or is this a new way to shelve a book?

In this book, the gay storyline is front & central to the story and is not a side issue. But if you have a gay character in a story, even a side character, does it need to be disclosed?

message 62: by Byron (new)

Byron (byft) Yvonne, I guess it really depends on how you view things. You can either be for accepting the story for it being a story regardless of the love interest or you can say that it's really just a gay ya romance story.. If ppl don't like that the characters happen to be gay then they won't read the rest of the story and they loose out on a good story.

Me I just appreciated the story. It's not like it was exclusively gay. I don't think I would have enjoyed it any less if it was oriented any other way. More it was just a bonus that the lead characters happened to be gay.
I've spent a lot of my life reading sci/fi fantasy stuff and accepting that the majority of the world is str8.

message 63: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne (ysareader) | 79 comments I agree Byron. I wouldn't care either because for me, it's about the story.

But I'm not one of the teen girls who picked up the book and were bummed it wasn't a MF twilight type story and gave the book a lower rating because of that.

I'm just wondering if a writer should disclose if there's a gay romance in the book, just to avoid that kind of reaction. From what you said, I assume your answer is they don't need to have it in the blurb.

message 64: by Byron (new)

Byron (byft) Your right Yvonne, I personally feel that it's never going to encourage people to treat everyone as equals based on sexuality. Same can be said for religion, race.. etc.. I REALLY don't care because I want a good story.

Having said that I see your point on people rating it lower.. I guess at the end of the day it's up to the publisher and author what they want to do. I just like my fantasy of acceptence of people hehehe..

message 65: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne (ysareader) | 79 comments It's not a complete fantasy. I'm sure lots of people read it in the same spirit as you and are quite accepting.

message 66: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Lynne (pjlauthor) I think if it were me, I'd make it clear. For the people who do want to read, then they can find it easier and for the people who don't, so they can avoid it. Of course, there are the people who would be shy/embarrassed about it and would avoid it if they knew. So by not saying anything it gives them a chance to discover a great story and get over that small hitch. I guess what I'm trying to say is, it's a double edge sword.

message 67: by K.Z. (new)

K.Z. Snow (kzsnow) I'm just about finished with The Boys on the Rock and have really enjoyed it!

message 68: by Summer (new)

Summer Michaels | 361 comments Megan, you are better than me, I made it to page one of Halo. It was really hard to do that!

I went to visit my mom yesterday. She is a high school librarian, they usually borrow books from me...so you can guess how shocked I was to see Rainbow Boys on the shelf. I grabbed it to read! I'm really excited to read it!!! Maybe I can get her to purchase other books as well.

Scylar Tyberius (scy_ty) I am reading Dylan by our group member D.V. Patton. ALmost finished. Great story.

I really liked the Rainbow Boys series; I thought they had a very authentic high-school characters feel to them.

Byron (byft) I have just finished reading TWO very AWESOME books by TWO very TALENTED authors who both just HAPPEN to be members...

Being Human by Patricia Lynne By Patricia Lynn

&

Dawn of Darkness (Daeva, #1) by Daniel A. Kaine

I would STRONGLY recommend them to ANY teen reader.. I would also recommend them to any person who want's a well crafted story and characters...

I would also like publicly acknowledge them for their hard work..

Having said that - LAST MONTH I found - through this group, another two amazing authors who have written some seriously good work - Sebastian the Great by Scylar Tyberius
&
A Hole in the World by Sophie Robbins

Who both impressed on my that there is brilliant YA LGBT work out there that needs to be read..

(I think my November reading of YA has been killed by Patricia and Daniel.. X_x)

message 75: by Tana (new)

Tana (tana_t) I just finished a book called Hushed by Kelley York , when I started reading it I didn't really know what it was about beside a young man who murdered a few people for her best friend who thought he was in love with. Anyway, its a great book and wanted to share it with everyone. The love story between the two young men is quite good.

message 76: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Lynne (pjlauthor) Tana, that book is on my wishlist. I soooo want to read it.

message 77: by K (new)

K (k-polipetl) | 4090 comments I've just finished reading the first 4 books in the Gone series by Michael Grant.

I am in a vampire mood so I think my next YA will be a re-read of Sunshine by Robin McKinley

Yvonne (ysareader) | 79 comments My last Y.A. read was a member book, Outtakes Of A Walking Mistake by Anthony Paull . It's one of those funny/sad books that I really liked.

It's too bad it isn't in paperback or hardcover right now because it would be a great book to add to a library. But maybe libraries will start adding books that are ebooks only now that we can borrow them.

It's reeeealy good. I love the Romeo and Juliet vibe Tracey gave the MCs without it being too angsty. It was one of those rare few that I read at all one sitting, took a snack break, then came back and read again.

Plus RJ Scott is a fantastic writer.

Summer Michaels | 361 comments I read Hex Hall and Demonglass. They are both YA and are alright reads. The vampire roommate is a lesbian. This series does have a different spin to demons (main character), vampires, and shifters that I haven't seen yet.

message 93: by Jo (new)

Jo Ramsey (Jo_Ramsey) | 1017 comments I just finished reading Hero, by Perry Moore (I think... my daughter walked off with the book and now I can't double check the author's name). The book isn't about the main character being gay; he is gay, and his sexuality causes some problems for him and his father, but the book's about him being a superhero. It was really good.

message 94: by Byron (new)

Byron (byft) That is such a great read Jo, I read that a couple of weeks ago. .

I'm currently reading Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green late this spring. I loved the use of the two different formats to identify the different protagonists. I've started the free teaser of Dylan by D.V. Patton, so far it looks like it will be a good read. I have several others in the waiting already so this may be for next spring.
