This hefty historical fiction/fantasy book details the life of a king who unites a divided Ireland. Begins with his village being attacked, witnessing the murder of a storyteller. He joins the army, grows from a skinny kid to a formidable man. After he is king, he marries at least twice. His first wife is blond, waifish, is raped and goes crazy. His second wife is a warrior queen type character - voluptuous, iron-willed, betrays him in the end. Might have something about a lion in the title. The cover might have been a landscape (of Ireland) as seen from the top of a hill.
