Welcome Lucas! Where in Pennsylvania are you from?

LOL - I had forgotten you were in the Great Books program. I'm glad you are enjoying it so well. I wish there was one in my area; of course, I don't have time for it right now, but something to think about when I retire.
At the supermarket, I look over the tabloid mags there, albeit with a skeptical eye on the real gossipy celebrity ones, and I try to keep up with the stories in three soaps, so I'm no angel either in the 'junk' reading department.'
To diversify further, CSI Las Vegas is premiering their new season tonight, and there is a death among the CSIs (his character name escapes me for the moment), and because of this, Sarah returns for a while. I will miss William Peterson when he is gone as Gill. I still think his ideal partner was Lady Heather, not Sarah. Any other CSIers out there?

Virginia (va-BBoomer) | 210 comments Whoops! Bottom part of #130 probably should be in Off-Topic. Sorry about that.

Yes, Virginia you are right. True Confessions is now going on in the Off Topic Cafe (smile).

I used to say that going into the NYC, I was reading fine books, reading the Wall Street Journal or Times or listening to a fine opera; coming out of NYC at night, it was the post. Too tired to breathe.

Lucas Hello everybody! Just a few things about myself, I live in a little 'burb just outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I'm originally from Kansas and I'm still going through a good deal of culture shock moving from the Midwest to the East Coast! I work at the Pharmacy of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and I also write in my spare time.

I have a fairly broad interest in history, with all subjects holding an interest to me. I often feel like a kid in a candy store whenever I make my way over to history section of the library. I'm almost like a magpie, I'll pick up any subject that catches my eye. I also studied Archaeology in college so I'm pretty handy when it comes to pre-history as well.

I look forward to talking with all of you and hunker down and do some reading with the group.

We can certainly use your knowledge of archaeology! Can't wait to hear your take on Herodotus.

Sid (sidthomson) | 26 comments Welcome Lucas -
I am originally from Kansas - Overland Park area. I have been in the NYC area for 15 years now. My first introduction to NYC was when I drove a 26' moving truck into the city and tried to find our new apartment. Very frightening.

Lucas Yikes! I thought I had it rough first driving around Philly in just a regular car. I bow before your superior driving abilities. If I was driving a moving truck I'd probably have gotten stuck somewhere and my family would never hear from me ever again. Nice to meet another immigrant Jayhawker!

Sara | 4 comments Hello Everyone,

I'm 23 and from the Big Island of Hawaii. I went to college in Washington DC and then returned home to figure out what to do with my life. While at home, I began to take classes at the local university and a great history teacher really opened the topic up to me. I'm in love with Greece and the Mediterranean in general. I just went to Greece earlier this year and decided, one day, I need to move there. I'm pretty much interested in learning about all kinds of history though, with European history currently being my favorite.

I currently work as a wedding, portrait, and event photographer and videographer. Taking pictures of people just pays the bills though, I prefer travel and scenic photography. I am also working on an independent film with a friend here in Hawaii. We hope to go into production early next year.

Thank you for letting me join the group. I'm really interested in discussing history with you all.

Aloha! Sara

Just noticed the icon sarah. You're adorable! I can't believe they're still re-doing the Parthenon. They've been working on it much longer than it took to build it.

message 115: by Sara (new) - rated it 3 stars

Sara | 4 comments My picture is from this year's trip. I was in Greece for 11 days. I actually didn't really go to any islands. I went to some of the Saronic ones, near to Athens, but no further than that. I really wanted to go to Santorini and Crete, but it got a bit too expensive. I'm hugely into archaeology though, and went to Delphi, Olympia, Mycenae, and Cape Sounio. I also went to some really neat monasteries in Meteora, in central Greece. It should be really interesting reading Herodotus now having been to Greece.

And to Vanessa: Yeah, I heard the Parthenon was supposed to be done for the 2004 Olympics. Umm, they're a little behind schedule.

That sounds like a wonderful trip. I remember Sounion. After reading Herodotus you're going to want to go to Turkey too. One by one, everyone in my great books class, has gone to Turkey and I hope, one day, to get there myself. So glad to have you with us and I can't wait to hear your first-person description of Delphi, Olympia and Mycenae. Welcome!

Please welcome Atishay from India. Welcome Atishay. When you get an opportunity, please introduce yourself to the group.

Bentley

message 118: by Atishay (new)

Atishay Hi ! I am Atishay and I am currently pursuing my engineering degree. I love history and though I haven't had the time to read much, I loved "Discovery of India" by Jawaharlal Nehru and the autobiographies of Lady Diana and Mahatma Gandhi. I really look forward to have discussions with everyone in this group and develop my interest further in the subject.

message 119: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Atishay! So happy to have you with us. Where in India are you from?

A prof of mine recently mentioned that Nehru was from a Parsi family. I'd never heard of that before. I'm looking forward to hearing your take on Herodotus.

Welcome Atishay; we are very happy to have you with us. Take some time to look around. We are currently reading The Histories by Herodotus and have completed My Early Life by Winston Churchill in another forum ( a very interesting book). We also have some threads going on about books which mention Herodotus or The Histories and some of these books are works of fiction; but we thought it would be fun to open some threads on them too. Those other books are American Gods, Traveling with Herodotus and The English Patient. The English Patient was also made into a movie.

The spotlighted book is The Histories and this classic is readily available even free on line. So you can jump in at any time and even on the beginning spotlighted threads.

We have an active Off Topic Cafe and the sky is the limit for topics that can be discussed there (music, other books, art, current and world events, personal musings, interests, hobbies, opera, sports. the economy, global warming..you can see pretty much find anything (lol) )....so you can always find someone on that thread pretty much anytime.

We also have threads which deal with the analysis of The Histories (The Cambridge Companion to Herodotus) which is an excellent literary companion to Herodotus itself. There is something for everyone here who loves history. We have a potential reading list of history and non fiction books which anybody can add to by simply sending me the name of the book and the author.

We are glad to have you.

Bentley

Hello Mark,

As Oldesq said just find the section with the appropriate Book and section numbers. It is easy to find; go to the spotlighted section and select view all. When you scroll down you will see ALL of the previous discussion sections. Once you post in that section, your post will bubble that thread up in the order and we will see a new post which we can respond to. Look forward to reading your post.
