Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) I started The Ruins of Gorlan by John Flanagan yesterday while I was out with my parents. I like it so far--it's very easy to read, and it has been very easy to get into.

message 26703: by tiasreads (new)

tiasreads I just finished As Time Goes By, a sequel/prequel to the movie Casablanca. It was actually pretty good. Now I think I'll start Caught.

Karen M | 1956 comments Still reading Angela's Ashes and started today Lost at the Con, free download & lite, and 44 Scotland Street which orginally ran as a serialized novel in the newspaper.

message 26705: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) I'm still reading The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara, which is awesome, and I started The Ruins of Gorlan by John Flanagan because I've been craving some fantasy.

Linda | 887 comments Just finished The Night Watch by Sarah Waters . Gave it a 1. If I wasn't reading it for a book club, I would have given up. Just confirms my dislike for the author's work. A complete slog.

message 26711: by Janny (new)

Janny (jannywurts) | 142 comments Just finished Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, halfway through The Lies of Locke Lamora, and starting The Book Thief for our local club.

Books recently finished that I loved were The Ninth Circle for its wry humor and crazy characters (picture Academia meets the Marines, and other things otherworldly) and The Daemon Prism which adequately finished Carol Berg's latest trilogy.

I am hugely looking forward to C. J. Cherry's latest in the Foreigner series, just released.

Yuliya (yuliyalovestoread) | 1685 comments Damned by Chuck Palahniuk ....Damned by Chuck Palahniuk and it very interesting book about perspective living in hell after death. It's like antipode of "Lovely Bones", there is story from the mouth of the girl killed and living in heavens, but in Damned this is a story from the worlds of young girl also, but leaving in hell

message 26721: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) Finished And Then There Were None And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie -- probably one of my favorite Christies so far, which surprised me. Finished The Brass Verdict The Brass Verdict (Mickey Haller, #2) by Michael Connelly also - which since I unexpectedly find myself serving on a jury this week was kind of apropos. Ripping through The Affair: A Reacher Novel The Affair A Reacher Novel by Lee Child , The Kitchen Witch The Kitchen Witch (Accidental Witch Trilogy, #1) by Annette Blair , and my pen-pal books for two of my groups: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Annie Barrows ; and The Borgia Bride The Borgia Bride by Jeanne Kalogridis -- each fascinating in its own way and all very different reads.

message 26722: by tiasreads (new)

message 26732: by Al (new)

Al Mascareñas (goodreadsalsmemoir) | 9 comments Funny you should ask. I got a call late last night from a collection agency about a tab with the Los Angeles Public Library to the tune of $72.00. Relying on my expansive business acumen, six months ago I go on the list for 1Q84, by Haruki Murakami, an amazing writer. When I finally got it, I discovered the *&^%ing thing is over 900 pages long! I am pretty sure the retail price is less than $72.00.

It's heavy. I suggest a digital copy. Don't worry about a spoiler. I only got up to page 600.1Q84

message 26737: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) I love reading old plays for a number of reasons. One reason is that they usually publish the original cast, often with a photograph or two, and I often discover actors whom I know as big stars either in early roles when they were virtually unknown (in one play I'm reading now, Edward G. Robinson is billed near the end as "an unidentified man") or, later in their careers, they've returned to the stage for fun, for a break, because they loved the live theatre, to do a play they believed in or to have an opportunity to work with a director, cast, or playwright they liked. The second play I'm reading, A Gift of Time: A Play in Two Acts, is written by Garson Kanin, who co-wrote the script for the Tracy/Hepburn movie "Adam's Rib" with his wife, the actress Ruth Gordon. When I open the cover, there looking up at me from a photograph are Henry Fonda and Olivia de Havilland! (Believe it or not, O de H is still alive, in her 90s...)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) Gitte wrote: "I'm reading Dangerous Liaisons by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos - very good so far!"

I read this, Love Letters and Two Other Plays: The Golden Age, What I Did Last Summer and Evelina around the same time and developed a love for epistolary novels because of them. One reason I'm loving The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society so much. Do you like epistolary novels in general?

message 26744: by Karen M (last edited Mar 10, 2012 04:43PM) (new)

Karen M | 1956 comments I've got three books going right now. The Ghostway, 44 Scotland Street and Yellow Medicine. I can read three at once but they have to be quite different. The Ghostway is a mystery without alot of violence but Yellow Medicine is quite violent.
