I hope you enjoy Catching Fire as much as I did. I just love Petra, Katniss, Gale and all the others in the book(s).

I hope you find the patience. Many people found the beginning a bit too slow but the further I read, the more I loved it. Especially when the stories get together.

Kami (katmiv) Ice Storm by Anne Stuart, the 4th installment in her Ice series.

message 14458: by Amber (new)

Amber Anderson (amabre) In the Forest by Edna O'Brien. The first couple of chapters were pretty depressing although compelling. I can tell this is going to be good-love the writing style and the Irish slang.

I like O'Brien's writing and In the Forest is one of her best. Everything of hers that I've read so far is kind of depressing but well worth reading.

I am still not sure what I thought of The Almost Moon! It was a strange read... I was really disturbed! I usually am not disturbed to this extreme with anything I read but this book gave me nightmares! Creepy! Overall I really enjoyed reading it! I would recommend it! Like I said though... a very different novel!

Paula: Have you read The Almost Moon? If so, what did you think? I would like to hear your opinion!

That's interesting Mary. I like Conroy too but have heard mixed reviews of South of Broad. I'm curious if I would like it but I have so many others on my list now...

Lauren, like you I found it very disturbing. It took me a couple of days to really digest the story but after doing so, I really did like the book. It is a very difficult read, but after looking at it from the point of mental illness, you get a better understanding of the why's and wherefore's of what was done. I almost stopped reading it but was glad that I had finished it. It's one I still think about.

JG (Introverted Reader) I finished Catching Fire and absolutely loved it. I think this was a rare case where the sequel was even better than the first! For me anyway. Now I can't believe I have to wait for the next one to come out!

Now I'm reading a little fairytale called Once Upon a Marigold. It's cute so far.

Liz I just finished She's Not There for a class earlier tonight, and need to start Guyland later this week. I'm also working on Lady Audley's Secret for my Vic Lit book club and New Moon (although that one's on the back burner right now).
Also, I keep hearing talk about how good Hunger Games is. I think I see in amazon order in my future.

Joy, I did read mixed reviews before reading this but I had high hopes. I started out loving it but, in the end, it did not live up to my expectations - just way too much going on for me. I would not recommend moving this ahead of other books on your list but I am sure that there are others here who will disagree. That's what I love about Goodreads!

Jo wrote: "Those are 2 books that i really want to read! I hope you enjoy them!"

I'm only on page 39 of Naked Lunch, but so far, yes I am. It was confusing at first, so I re-read the first couple of pages, but I'm getting into the language and style of it. So far it's about as crazy as I thought it'd be.

But I can say I thoroughly enjoyed The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. It was informative, funny, and at times confusing as h***, and really great.

You should really read them both. :)

Vicki wrote: "Have you read Thousand Splendid Suns? I loved that one."

I loved The Kite Runner and I really want to read this one too, but so far I haven't gotten around to buying it. Maybe on my next excursion...

If you like to read about that time in history, two great books are Acid Dreams by Martin A. Lee and Bruce Shlain and Can't Find My Way Home by Martin Torgoff. Both talk quite a bit about the beat generation, as well as the hippie subculture. Both were also well-written and fun reads (at least in my opinion!).

I've been wanting to read Naked Lunch and just never seem to get around to it. I'm going to add it to my "to-read" list and order it from Amazon this week. No more procrastination!

message 14486: by Dan (new)

Dan | The Ancient Reader (theancientreader) Asa and Darcia,

I'd like to hear what you think of Naked Lunch when you finish it. I thought the first 40 pages or so weren't too bad but after that it went downhill fast.

message 14488: by KarenLee (new)

KarenLee I finished "The Glimmer Palace" yesterday evening and then took "The Beach Street Knitting Society and Yarn Club" to bed with me. I'm reading Don Quixote, but it's just to heavy to read in bed? I think I'll see about getting it as an e-book. That will help with the heaviness of the book.

I have heard that from a lot of people. I still need to read Kite Runner. The emotional level was quite high for Thousand Splendid Suns and it is definitely a book that stayed with me for quite awhile.

Stephanie (sbez05) | 556 comments Currently reading Catch-22 and finding it really hard to get into, but that's probably because I had so much going on the last couple of days that I can only read in short bursts. I think this one will require some time set aside to get invested in it. I'm also reading Club Dead.

message 14495: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (sbez05) | 556 comments Yeah, I'm really not into it so far. I think I'll give it a little uninterrupted time tonight and if I still feel the same way I'll reshelve it to come back to later. I always feel really bad about not finishing a book once I've started it, but I've found that if I tell myself I'll come back to it later, it's easier to move on. :)

jessi (infinitevantage) | 86 comments Stephanie wrote: "I always feel really bad about not finishing a book once I've started it, but I've found that if I tell myself I'll come back to it later, it's easier to move on. :)"

I always feel bad, too. I just couldn't get into Catch-22, nor could I get into Middlesex (which surprised me since I have heard such great things) on two separate occasions. I will definitely try again, though.

I have come to the point where I will not force myself to read something I am not in the mood for/I can't get into, unless it's required reading for school of course. I used to make a reading list of what I would read, in what order, and I would find that by the time I would get to a certain point on the list I was feeling like reading something completely different than what I had planned out for myself. And trying to force that would almost never work out.

Lori, I had the exact same experience!! I think I made it about 50 pages in on 3 separate occasions after hearing this person or that person say how much they "loved" this book and how it was their "all-time favorite". After the first and even after the second attempt at reading it I still felt somewhat guilty for not finishing it, but after the third attempt I can say that I will not be picking this book up again. I just don't get it.
