It was good. There was more fiction in it though. I enjoyed both of them. I read The Other Queen-Phillipa Gregory. same subject, but I hated the book. I quess after you read two good ones, third time charm did not apply.

Finished Freakonomics and the Lightning Thief and am now reading the Abstinence Teacher by Tom Perrotta.
I am absorbed in Special Topics in Calamity Physics by Marisha Pessl. Her language is stunning with its exhaustive bibliography references, innumerable literary, historical, and other allusions. The story is suspenseful and reminescent of A Secret History by Donna Tart, but with more humor and irony. I'm just so happy right now as I read this luscious book!
Jenna, The Abstinence Teacher was our first group read here at TNBBC.... when you finish, check out the thread we posted our discussion on...

Now I'm reading Stone Junction by Jim Dodge. I've had this book for more than a decade; but this will be the first book by this author that I've read.
Just finished The Earth Hums in B Flat, a strange story told from the point of view of a young girl growing up in Wales. A nice mystery mixed with growing up... the more Gwenni looks into the mystery the more she finds that life, her life, all life is connected to everything else.
Also read Darwin A Graphic Biography a funny thing -- the life and work of Charles Darwin told in comic book form. I learned some things about Darwin that I didn't know before too.
Am now reading Hotel World. I'm at the very beginning (fell asleep, I confess, but not because of the book), but it's fun... the ghost of ahotel guest maid, who died in strange circumstances in the hotel, takes us on a tour and introduces us to the other guests.

I finished yesterday "The Angel's game" (loved it, really surprising) and started "The Razor's Edge", by Somerset Maugham.
I've finished rereading Marion Zimmer Bradley's Firebrand and I've started on Jo Graham's Black Ships. So far it's really good. Kept me reading well pass my bedtime.
Just finished South of Broad by Pat Conroy and really, really liked it. This is coming from a person who read Prince of Tides and gave up on Pat Conroy there and then. This was for our local B&N book club read and am so glad someone "made me do it". Next is The Shanghai Girls by Lisa See.

Have you read the historical fiction on Mary, Queen of Scotts, by Margaret George? She also wrote Memoirs of Cleopatra and The Autobiography of Henry VIII. Both were wonderful. I haven't read Mary, Queen of Scotts though but guess that its probably very good.
I'm listening to "The Ice Maiden" Edna Buchanan and am reading "The Garden" Elsie Aidinoff. "The Garden" is supposed to be YA but the staff at a library where I sub has removed it from the shelves. They wanted me to read it and let them know what I think of it so we'll see.

I hope you will like the secret life of bees. I didn't liek the beginning much but it changed and it became a very colourful book. That is the image that stayed with me.
Linda wrote: "Just finished South of Broad by Pat Conroy and really, really liked it. This is coming from a person who read Prince of Tides and gave up on Pat Conroy there and then. Prior to this I read The Greengage Summer by Rumer Godden which was a 4 star read for me.
I'm still reading Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. This one will take me awhile. It's huge! However, I'm really enjoying it.I've also started The Children of Men. I've hardly started but I think I'm going to like it. It got me on the first sentence.
Yesterday I got finished with The Alienist by Caleb Carr which I really enjoyed and then I picked up Bookends by Jane Green, which I really hated..don't know why I finished it, but I kept thinking it would get better...it didn't
Shona, I am like you, in that I will continue to suffer through a book that I dislike, hoping it will get better. Well, at least you finished it, and wont be left wondering if it did, huh???
Lori wrote: "Shona, I am like you, in that I will continue to suffer through a book that I dislike, hoping it will get better. Well, at least you finished it, and wont be left wondering if it did, huh???"It's awful isn't it..I even stayed up past midnight to finish it, thinking it will either get better or at least I'll finish it and get it out of my TBR pile! I have to get over the compulsion to read everything even if I'm not enjoying it..to many other books just waiting to be opened!
Shona wrote: "Yesterday I got finished with The Alienist by Caleb Carr which I really enjoyed and then I picked up Bookends by Jane Green, which I really hated..don't know why I finished it, but I kept thinking ..."Shona, it's been years since I read The Alienist and I remember enjoying it as well.
I just finished Diana Gabaldon's Dragonfly In Amber. It's the second book to Outlander. Wonderful books.
Shona wrote: "Lori wrote: "Shona, I am like you, in that I will continue to suffer through a book that I dislike, hoping it will get better. Well, at least you finished it, and wont be left wondering if it did, ..."Shona, Lori and all others that read books that aren't good (or at least not to them): I think most of us "punish ourselves" by doing this but at some point like Shona said we must look at all the books that we want to read (I couldn't get through my current list in 2 lifetimes and I keep adding all the time) and decide that after 25 pages or 50 pages or whatever limit you choose you will close the book and move on to another one. As I am rapidly closing in on 60 I realize more and more that I have a limited amount of time (so many books, so little time) to read all the wonderful books that are printed. That makes it easier to say, "okay, I just don't like this book and I'm not going to finish it".
I've read some books that I just couldn't get through. I now save my time for those books that are known to be good. If within the first few 100 pages drags I give up. Like you said "so many books, so little time".
I also continuing reading books I don't like in the hopes that it will get better. Even when it's a library book which is free, I feel compelled to continue. I want to stop, but I just keep going.
I finished The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. It was a cute story, although I did not get too carried away with it. Yes I wanted to finish it and see where she ended up. There were many quotes that I really enjoyed and that stuck with me. I even added most of them to my wall. I liked that it was a coming-of-age tale and I really saw her grow up in the only the few weeks that she shared in the book. I enjoyed it, but it didn't make my 5-star list. Sorry!

Sometimes it is just not the right time for a particular book. If it fails the second time then I'm done.
I'm now reading The Bonesetter's Daughter by Amy Tan. This will be my first Amy Tan book and I hope it's good!I need help deciding which book to read out of my "recently bought" pile. Any suggestions? Take a look and tell me what you recommend! :)
Michelle wrote: "I finished The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. It was a cute story, although I did not get too carried away with it. I've heard "The Weight of Silence" is good. I bet "The Handmaids Tale" and "The Shining" are good. The movies were good anyway. I see you've read some of Stephenie Meyer's books. I loved the Twilight saga. Have you read "The Host" by her? The book "The Hunger Games" was good by Suzanne Collins. Her next book "Catching Fire" is out now. You'll have to let me know how "The Bonesetter's Daughter" was.
Yes I've read The Host. It was good also. The Hunger Games and Catching Fire are on my TBR list. I have so many books that I want to read it's becoming ridiculous. I am forcing myself to not buy anymore books until I have the ones on my "recently bought" list down to 3 books. It may take awhile and I do not know if I can last that long! There's so many books out there calling my name! LOL.
I am reading

I was about 100 pages from the end of Pet Sematary but couldn't finish it in time for vacation, and as I didn't want to take a library book on a camping trip, I had to set it aside. While camping I read (and thoroughly enjoyed) Watership Down and I'm now in the middle of The Shadow of the Wind. Once I finish SotW I will go back to Pet Sematary before starting The Help.Whew! :)
Yay for Watership Down.
I saw the film many many years ago and only read the book this year. I enjoyed both!

I am having a hard time with THE SHADOW OF TEH WIND. I have heard such great things about it, but it is just a little boring. Does it get better?
Lori - I haven't seen the movie, but have heard great things about it. I'm definitely going to check it out soon. I thought the book was fantastic! One of those you can't believe you made it so long without reading.Ann - I'm finding The Shadow of the Wind a bit disappointing myself. I like the humor and the dynamic between the characters but it's not really living up to the hopes I had for it after all the rave reviews I heard. In parts it reads sort of cheesily and flows awkwardly, although I'm not sure if that has more to do with translation issues than anything else. I'm moving through it pretty quickly, though, and for the most part am enjoying it. How far are you?
I loved Shadow of the Wind, purely for the images that leaped off the page. I loved the images of an almost crumbling Barcelona. But I always had the feeling I was missing something in the translation.
I am reading "Persuasion" by Jane Austen, seems a little rushed, more than her others at least. But she was ill when she wrote it, so I shouldn't be too harsh.

Hello Brenda,
So far I'm enjoying it. ;) It's quite a thick book and I still have almost 400 pages to go.

Izze wrote: "i'm reading "Confessions of an ugly step sister""Someone recommended that to me and actually let me "borrow" it. It has been sitting on my shelf for about a year. Let me know what you think so I can bump it up!
The Last Jews of Kerala. Its not written by anyone Jewish or from a Jewish point of view, but from what its like to be the final handful of people, all past child-bearing years - of a group that has a demonstrable history of at least 2,500 years on the subcontinent.
I have just finished reading The English American A Novel by Alison Larkin which I enjoyed. It was a bit too tidy at the end though. I am now reading Little Bee by Chris Cleave. It sucked me in straight away and I can't wait to see where it is going.
