Tani | 137 comments Li, what did you think of The Independence of Miss Mary Bennet? It was one of the books that I considered reading for the summer challenge, since it's on the most unpopular list, but I never got around to it. I still might want to pick it up eventually though, so I'm really curious about people's reactions to it.

Lisa | 437 comments Tank...I started to read that one, too. I stopped quickly because I didn't like the direction in which the characters were developed. I wanted to keep the image of them created by Austen. I'm a fan of McCullough, but I couldn't read that one.

Suzanne (bellamy22) | 610 comments Alicia, try reading Dean Koontz 'The Taking' I think you might really like it! Let me know, okay?

message 13804: by Anna (new)

Anna (gqannanguyen) I'm reading The Shadow of the Wind. Actually I just started the first 10 pages earlier today before I was forcefully pulled away from it. So far I have to say that I can't wait to dive back to Barcelona in 1945 with Daniel.

Tani, I managed to finish reading it but I can't say I enjoyed it a lot. Like Lisa said, the direction which the characters were developed were rather...weird (for lack of a better word). At first I kept an open mind about it but after a while I just couldn't believe that this would be the way the characters of P&P would turn out in 20 years...that and I found the plot of the story rather boring =(

message 13806: by Petra (new)

Petra I'm reading Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. It was a bit of a slow and tedious start but then the story picked up. I'm really enjoying it now.

Jo Lori wrote: "Pers, this is a great book. I really enjoyed it, as much as you can enjoy a sci fi novel about the end of the world :)

Oh yes, it was really good! I'm already thinking about getting another of John Wyndham's books... and the TBR pile just keeps on growing, heh.

But for now, I'm reading Tender Is the Night.

message 13808: by Rachel Lee (new)

Rachel Lee (rlcwt9) | 71 comments Couldn't sleep last night, so I finished 3 YA books.

The Chosen One-Fast Read, but it had a lot of depth and was very emotional.

Princess of the Midnight Ball-good, quick read- love Jessica Day George

Don't Judge a Girl by Her Cover-this series is always enjoyable, will look forward to the next one

Now to finish The Big Over Easy and Extracurricular Activities so I can read the sequels for the Fall Challenge.

Paula | 1098 comments JG wrote: "I'm reading The Dress Lodger. I'm not too sure what I think of it yet, but I do know that I'm glad I live now and not then!

I LOVED "The Dress Lodger" when I read it. It did take some getting into but not too long before you become enmeshed in the characters lives. Hope you'll end up liking it.

Paula | 1098 comments Lauren wrote: "Just finished Valley of the Dolls by Jacqueline Susann! I loved it! Couldn't put it down!

There is a sequel to "Valley" Lauren. I think it's called "Shadow of the Dolls" and continues in the characters lives. I thought it was pretty good but not as good as the first one of course. It was started by Suzanne but finished by her sister? or friend after her death.

message 13811: by Emily (new)

Emily Finished Sexing the Cherry in one night with a nice case of insomnia, I really liked it but it was strange, though that could have been compounded by my lack of sleep.

Now I'm reading Toni Morrison's Beloved, about half way through and really enjoying it.

message 13812: by Susanna (new)

Susanna (jb_slasher) Finished Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell. Starting Puhdistus by Sofi Oksanen.

Esther (eshchory) | 575 comments Pers wrote: "...But for now, I'm reading Tender Is the Night."

I watched Tender is the Night because I liked both Peter Strauss (playing Dick Diver) and Fitzgerald very much.
I then read the book and enjoyed it even more. I wanted to smack Nicole.

If I hadn't read so much Fitzgerald the decadence would make it almost like fantasy.

message 13814: by Lzz (new)

Lzz | 1 comments I am reading a lot of books currently - I start to read a book, but stop and start reading another one - but the one I am reading now is Skeleton Creek by Patrick Carmen.

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments i'm about 1/4 of the way in to The Skin Gods. it's not bad, but it's been awhile since i've read a police-style mystery, so it's a little hard to get sucked in to. good story though.

message 13817: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (katywlawsbcglobalnet) | 3 comments I hesitate to say that I'm just starting the third book of "Twilight..." Being a bit "middle aged," (can you be "a bit" middle aged?) I'm enjoying the teenage angst, etc. Great escapism.

JG (Introverted Reader) Paula, I ended up liking The Dress Lodger quite a bit. It's not a new favorite by any means, but I did like it.

I read Persepolis 1 The Story of a Childhood yesterday. It was a solid 4 stars.

I've been on a pretty long stretch of 3 star books, so now I'm starting Neil Gaiman's Fragile Things Short Fictions and Wonders, hoping he'll break me out of my rut.

Beth Diiorio (beth_diiorio) | 52 comments Recently finished Patty Jane's House of Curl and really enjoyed it (4 stars), as well as Nineteen Minutes (2 stars). I've gotta take a break from Jodi Picoult books...the "doom and gloom" feeling is too predictable. Now I am reading Three Bags Full .

message 13832: by Donna (new)

Donna | 137 comments Hi Beth, I hope you enjoy Three Bags Full as much as I did. Very creative and a good mystery too.

message 13833: by Mosca (last edited Aug 29, 2009 02:31PM) (new)

Mosca | 828 comments Just finished reading Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse by Louise Erdrich, which was really a joy. So I wrote this review

I've been a bit scattered, reading a few books at the same time; but I hope now that I can settle down to one at a time again.

Now I'm reading Ghostwritten by David Mitchell.

message 13842: by [deleted user] (new)

Still reading The Girl Who Played With Fire by Stieg Larsson, and of course i'm loving it, don't know why i held off for so long before starting it. It definitely stacks up to the first in the series (Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) as i only have about 150 pages to go and i still haven't figured it out yet.

Can't wait for number 3!
