I have about 200 more pages of The Angel's Game. I am really enjoying this book, more than The Shadow of the Wind.I hope to finish today, then it's on to a biography of Woodrow Wilson. It's an ILL, so I have to finish soon...no renewals.
I'm currently reading Pride and Prejudice, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and re-reading Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
Nichola wrote: "Phew just finished reading Labyrinth by Kate Mosse, which i enjoyed every word of :) However was a tad to long getting into the main plot at the start. But alltogether amazing! Now im starting on ..."
Nichola, I loved the labrinth. The stories wer so great!
I just finised (a couple hours ago) Fugitive:A Novel by Phillip Margolin. I enjoyed it, it was a little slow for me in the beginning but I am glad I stayed with it.Now I am about 80 pages into Vision in White which is the first Nora Roberts book I have read. Not bad so far.
I am reading Three To Get Deadlyand am at a point that (probably for the first time to me)it is actually getting pretty serious in the story. I mean since when are there four dead bodies burried in a Plum story?
I am listening to Dead Run by P J Tracy. This is the 3rd book in the Monkeywrench series. Very enjoyable for a summer mystery read.
Wow, I never thought I'd finish these last two books: May Bird and the Ever After and A Long Way Down. Was visiting family, and just couldn't get into a reading (for the first) or listening (for the second) mindset. But I've finally had a chance to start The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Not too far yet, but seems interesting. And I'm also starting the first nonfiction I've read in a while: Engines of Creation. I'm listening to Anansi Boys as I potter around town. I usually love Neil Gaimen.
I just started reading The Night Watch. Only 15 pages in but I'm already having flashbacks to McEwan's Atonement which I read earlier this year. I'm also thinking of finding books that are set in WWII and feature British soldiers. (I'd love recommendations if anyone has any.)
Im over half way through Snow Flower and the Secret Fan and it's just amazing. I cant wait to read Peony in love, and I think the Joy Luck Club is by the same author also and i have that one too.

Sounds interesting. I'm reading Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince before I go and see the movie on the 21st :)

I've started reading Daniel Silva's Moscow Rules for a change of pace (after just finishing a fantasy trilogy =))
Just finished "The Angel's Game". Loved it! So excited to find this site and discover a discussion group for that book. Can't wait to stop by the library tomorrow and pick up "The Shadow of the Wind". Wondering if everyone enjoyed it as much as "Angel's"? But to tide me over until then, I'm reading the new John Lescroart -"A Plague of Secrets".
Kristin wrote: "Im over half way through Snow Flower and the Secret Fan and it's just amazing. I hope you will enjoy it. I have Snow Flower on my to read shelf and have heard good things about it. Can't wait to read it.!
Lora, I made a thread for discussion of The Angel's Game... if you head back to the main TNBBC page, and scroll down a ways to the section called "wanna discuss this novel", the thread is in there. :) And yes, I LOVED The Shadow of the Wind. :) You won't be disappointed.
I just finished The Angel's Game, and I could NOT put it down. I just adore Carlos Ruiz Zafon's writing, he is amazing. :) I read the book over the past 2 days, which is fast for me for a novel that size. I really enjoyed it a lot, but the ending left me a little confused. Overall though, it was a great read. :) Now I'm going to pick up The Cellist of Sarajevo again.
I'm up to Book #6 in the Sookie Stackhouse series Definitely Dead, i'm really liking this series and getting through it pretty quickly.

Let me recommend to you both Lisa See's newest book - Shanghai Girls. I have just started it and if you like Snow Flower, you will also love this book. Check it out!
Just finished Journey by Moonlight by Antal Szerb and I'm currently reading The Pendragon Legend again by Antal Szerb, The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle, The House on the Strand by Daphne du Maurier
Shanghai Girls has been on my wish list for awhile I just finished Snow Flower last night and I'm going to start Peony in Love today.
Cheri wrote: "I'm in the middle of Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo."What an incredible book! I hope you enjoy it!
I just finished Hungry Woman in Paris which was so fantastic that I read the entire book in one sitting. Highly recommended!Hungry Woman in Paris
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society- Just started reading today, but looking forward to it.I finished this book last week and it was just wonderful. I can't recommend it enough. This will transport you to another place and time and all the characters seemed so real. Just Amazing!
Now reading Native Son by Richard Wright. I have some objections but over halfway through I am 'enjoying' it as far as that word can be used with this kind of subjects.
Kristin wrote: "Im almost done with The Glass Castle and I am very happy with the book, I'm almost sad that it's going to be ending soon, but i'm excited to see the story progress more. I have no idea what im read..."The author of The Glass Castles is a reporter for MSNBC I think. I loved that book too.
Okay, I have THE book to read, you will not be able to put down. "I"m Not Scared" by Niccolo Ammaniti. Great story with twists and turns, narrated by a nine year old boy. Who's read it and do you agree?
I am heading out for a few weeks of camping, and gathering books to bring. Thought I would pick up that "The Story of Edgar Sawtelle". Has anyone read it and do you recommend it? Thanks
I'm reading The Penelopiad The Myth of Penelope and Odysseus by Margaret Atwood. It's different and took me a while to get the hang of reading the style. Now I'm really enjoying it.
Right now I'm reading The Afgan by Forsythe. I just finished Pompeii by Harris and loved it. Before that, I read Shanghai Girls by Lisa See. It was wonderful.

Thanks! I'm really liking it so far!
I watched Nancy Drew last night and decided that I needed to reread some of the books since I haven't read any of them in awhile.Currently reading: Nancy's Mysterious Letter by Carolyn Keene
Snow Flower & the Secret Fan was amazing. Try not to have the same high expectations for Peony in Love, or you might be disappointed. Joy Luck Club is by Amy Tan, and it's a fabulous book.
I have just joined, so hello everyone. I am about to start reading The Good Mayor by Andrew Nicoll. Has anyone read this? Looks like The Angel's Game is popular - I'll reserve it from the library.
it's a 1.50/7 day rental from the library. I think it's a wonderful story. There are plenty that think the opposite of me however.. oh well~!
Just finished Brooklyn A Novel by Colm Toibin. For three-quarters of the book I loved it, then the plot just seemed to take a nose dive. It seemed that the author was as indecisive as the main character about what to do with her life.
Hi Gracee, I loved People of the Book. So much to think about indeed. Perhaps that is what some people did not like - too many story lines not always clearly connected - but I still thought it was very good. Have you read her other books?
I'm reading The Drawing of the Three. My plan was to read a few books between each installment of the series, but it's so good, I may have to forego that. We'll see...
Donna wrote: "Hi Gracee, I loved People of the Book. So much to think about indeed. Perhaps that is what some people did not like - too many story lines not always clearly connected - but I still ..."Yes, Donna, I've read
Year of Wonders , and just recently found March at the 1/2 priced used book store. I think she's a fantastic writer, and her vocabulary always exercises my "gotta look up THAT one" fingers...
I just finished the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - which I absolutely loved and now anxiously awaiting when I can get my hands on The Girl Who Played With Fire. In the meantime, I just picked up Mister Pip by LLoyd Jones...only one chapter in and I'm already intrigued.
Kathryn wrote: "Right now I'm reading The Afgan by Forsythe. I just finished Pompeii by Harris and loved it. Before that, I read Shanghai Girls by Lisa See. It was wonderful."Kathryn - I am reading Shanghai Girls now. It is wonderful, albeit heartwrenching at times. What this family, particularly the sisters, has had to endure. Especially given their status at the start of the story. I am just about page 100. I love how Lisa See writes, transports you back to the time.
Nancy wrote: "Okay, I have THE book to read, you will not be able to put down. "I"m Not Scared" by Niccolo Ammaniti. Great story with twists and turns, narrated by a nine year old boy. Who's read it and do you..."I read I'm Not Scared earlier in the year and really liked it. I liked the whole "coming of age with a creepy twist" angle the story had. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Nancy wrote: "I am heading out for a few weeks of camping, and gathering books to bring. Thought I would pick up that "The Story of Edgar Sawtelle". Has anyone read it and do you recommend it? Thanks"Hi Nancy - I read the Story of Edgar Sawtelle and absolutey loved it. I think if you are a dog lover as I am, it might add a little something extra, but not sure about that. It is a real journey, a book to really get lost in. It really brought about a great deal of emotion in me when I was reading it. Have someone ready to discuss it with, because once you read it, I think you will want to talk about it in depth.

I agree, Jodi, I wasn't that crazy about Peony in Love. I am looking forward to Snow Flower though - have heard so many good things about it.
Thanks for the recommendation, Diane. I'll have to check out Shanghai Girls (when it comes out in paperback).
Dree wrote: "I just got China Miéville's The City and the City from my library queue yesterday. I was worried this would be way too intellectual (or something) for me. But, I am almost 50 pages in and it is soo..."glad to hear that! this one is on my list, and i think i after i get through my current TBR mountain, that will get top priority!
i finally finished The Quiet Girl:A Novel, and i was kind of disappointed in it. i'm going to try and get through more of John Adams tonight, and i'll probably start The 19th Wife tomorrow. i haven't gotten far on my reading lately, i need to pick up the pace!
