boy, lost, wolf and a gun

I thought the title has something to do with "lost" but I haven't found anything that seems right. It's about a boy, in the beginning he has a gun, possibly kills someone (his parents maybe?). He leaves and is on his own. And it seemed like he had a wolf or dog or something with him.
Any ideas??

this sounds vaguely like the journey of natty gann. it's about a girl who's father is out of work in the depression - he has to leave town to work and can't find her before he goes. she dresses as a boy and travels cross country to find him - befriends a wolf and travels with the wolf to washington state...is that the right one?

No, definitely not Natty Gann. I could be wrong about the wolf. But I wrote down the title as "Lost" years ago and can't find anything that fits what I remember of the story. I'm pretty sure about the gun part, too.

Maybe something by Walt Morey? Kavik the Wolf Dog or Canyon Winter involve boys with guns, I remember.

Try Amazon for descriptions, Goodreads isn't very helpful in this respect.
