Wanted: Reading Buddies
who wants to join for COLD MOUNTAIN reading buddies?...Sa mga Malalamig ang Pasko jan SMP join na kayo!...
Ikaw, kelan mo gustong mag-start?
And Charles Frazier won The National Book Award for it — an extraordinary feat for a debut novel! :)
Maganda ang Cold Mountain. The story may not be really original, but it was very beautifully written. Very poetic.
Hehehe...well, to each his own. Mejo picaresque sya, and obviously if you've seen the movie, you know what it's about. Maganda rin yung movie, directed by Anthony Mingella, who is a superb director. The novel is a bit different from the movie, but not much. They are equally beautiful and very moving.
Ay, ako mas kabado akong magbuddy read na kasama si Po kesa mainip sa novel, hahaha.I just got a copy of Cold Mountain last night (pero binigyan na ako ni Miss Veronica ng 1st edition, :D). It's about farming and walking. And farming and walking. And farming and walking. Kidding! :D
Lol..no really..that about sums it up...farming and walking :P Pero..farming and walking...poetically hahaha!
I liked the movie so I want to read the book. However, that comment of my friend is the reason why I have not tried cracking it up yet.
If you liked the movie...then you'll like the book even more, because it's better than the movie. lol.
I got the "farming and walking" summary from JZ's review of the film. Or was it the book? And because of that, I haven't tried cracking it up. But wait , if I'm older and stronger to endure all the poetic farming and walking, I will go through it. :D
hehehe...yeah, I think you should give it a shot. I think it's better An Inheritance of Loss at least or Fall on Your Knees...so if you can read those, then I'm sure you won't have trouble with Cold Mountain.
What? Better than "Inheritance" and "Fall on Your Knees?" Are you kidding? Those are not poetic ek-ek. Their plots are full, taut and clear.
I have no problem with poetic ek-ek. Kahit stream-of-consciousness ni Woolf or Faulkner, gusto ko. Ayaw ko lang yong trying hard. First impression ko yan kay Banville sa "The Sea" pero parang I want to try reading it again. Now that I am older ha ha.
The Inheritance of Loss kasi is not poetic. It is playful. The Sea, ah, yan ay poetic. If Cold Mountain sounds like this, I might read it soon.
Well just because it's poetic it doesn't mean it doesn't have a full, strong plot. I was just saying that if you guys can stand novels like An Inheritance of Loss or Fall on your Knees, then you won't find Cold Mountain too boring, because, in my opinion, Cold Mountain is better than both those books.Yes, The Sea was poetic, but, not in a good way. I didn't like that book. Cold Mountain isn't like that though...
Oh, H. I did not stand those two novels. They were delightful books and I had a grand time reading them. Yes, a poetic book can have full strong plot. It's just that books like those can be wordy and some people - those people who want fast action and event-driven plots - may find them boring. I mean those people who read and enjoy the books of Robert Ludlum, Tom Clancy and John Grisham.
Cold Mountain was described by my officemate-friend as a story that can be told if you remove half of the pages. In other words, very wordy.
Which is an irony. Poets tell their message in the shortest way possible. So, maybe "Cold Mountain" is also not poetic but just wordy and maybe my friend is right. Maybe, boring. :)
It's a plot-driven novel...and I didn't find it wordy in a sense that the "extra" words were unnecessary. Anyway, the best way for you would be to read it then see for yourself.
hahah now I kinda don't want to read The Sense of an Ending because I disliked both The Sea and The Gathering!
But you NEED to read it anyway for your Booker pursuit, hahaha. At pang-asar lang ang The Gathering because I know a lot of people hate the book. I kinda like it. 3-stars. I'm thinking of changing it to 4-stars. LOL.
The Gathering and The Sea eh. Honestly, between the two, mas nagustuhan ko yung The Sea.
I hate: "The Gathering" and "The Sea". Pero that was 2 years ago when I was not yet into Faulker and Virginia Woolf. Kapag nabasa mo na ang "The Sound and the Fury" at "To the Lighthouse" you know that those poetic ek-ek novels have the space in your heart. The reason why I am saying this is that I liked "The Passion of H" by Clarice Lispector. Tungkol sa pagpatay sa isang ipis. Tapos parang 150 pages. Lagi nyang binabanggit. Di naman gay ang author. Babae naman. Strange.
Interesting kasi para siyang character study nung kapatid niya. I don't recall the name, haha. What led him to his death (NOT a spoiler; this is at the blurb), how was his relationship with the narrator, et al.Nakakaloka kasi nireveal niya yung traumatizing events sa buhay ng kapatid niya, and then hindi naman pala siya sure sa details nun (sa kotse ba o sa kwarto?), which makes the reader wonder whether the narrator is telling the truth or not.
If you ask me, straight men are MOST fixated with penises. Too conscious with size and appearance. Like size matters.Well, it DOES matter. Otherwise, walang usapin, hahaha.
Ok lang yon, after this discussion, I'm sure no one else would want to read it anyway :P Nainis lang ako kasi nga kala ko sobrang big deal and mystery nung pagkapatay ng kapatid nya....tapos, ganon, parang character study lang pala sya and...hindi naman ganon ka interesting yung guy...and his life. And I didn't find the whole "traumatic" experience so traumatic.
BTW, KD, by "poetic" do you mean mainly, stream of consciousness (kasi Faulkner and Woolf ang ginamit mong examples)...? For me, poetic doesn't necessarily translate to stream of consciousness...
Kaloka. Not sure how to describe it pero stream-of-consciousness easily comes to mind.
Sabagay, the brother seems like a smelly guy, hahaha.I think traumatic is subjective. Could it be that the brother actually enjoyed it?
Hmm then maybe mali ang pagkadescribe ko sa Cold Mountain as "poetic" (hehehe...hindi talag ako maka-let go sa topic na 'to :P). It's just that the author is very descriptive about the characters' surroundings, and he does use metaphors...hmmm...sounds poetic to me LOL. I just don't know what other word to use to describe his writing syle, pero definitely hindi sya stream of consciousness (kasi if it was, I never would have read/finished/liked it because I avoid stream of consciousness like the plague! hehehe)
Kasi holiday daw bukas, hahaha! At para makasunod ako sa thread, I'll start reading Invisible Man or All the King's Men tomorrow. If there are any takers for a buddy read, please let me know.
The Inheritance of Loss buddy read, hahaha.
Oops...off topic :P Wala lang...bad day hehehe.
At actually, kanina pa off topic.
I'm up for ALL THE KING'S MEN kasi nabasa ko na ang INVISIBLE MAN (ni Ralph Ellison ha hindi yong kay JULES VERNE ha ha)ALL THE KING'S MEN parang timely kasi malapit na ang pasko, THREE KINGS! ha ha. Kaso, I have to look for my copy na nasa likod ng likod ng likod ng shelves ha ha. Simula na ba? Ano pang naka-line up mo? Nasa last 100 pages ako ng Inheritance of Loss. Maganda ah.
Dante wrote: "Hi guys. Anong book maganda basahin for Christmas? :)"The Christmas Mystery by Jostein Gaarder hehehe.
KD: For this year, All the King's Men, Invisible Man, and Midnight's Children (with Aldrin, if he's still up to it). I have to finish it!Or you can just alert me kapag available na ang copy mo.
H: Yung "Shout outs" thread functions as that. Kahit anong rants and raves pa yun, book-related or not.
Dante: A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens? :D
@Angus...sali ako sa Midnight's Children :) Kelan ang start?@Dante: No...it's sort of fashioned like a children's book, but it's about solving a type of puzzle/mystery. It's not Philosophical...that's Sophie's World (same author).
H: Baka mid-December pa siya. Will alert you kapag malapit na. :DDante: YW, but really, I haven't read that yet. :D
THE CHRISTMAS BOOKS by Charles Dickens:The Five Christmas Books
