Lew Fulton If I'm not wrong, Hardy really gives this little bagger short shrift. There is only passing mention of her being pregnant, giving birth, and then having a baby around for the last year or so in the story. Just kind of felt like he doesn't really care for babies. But probably he was just too busy with the plot to worry about it....

Jim Maybe he would have preferred to sell the baby to a passing sailor like in The Mayor of Casterbridge. Hardy clearly loves describing the landscape and rural practises but babies are not his cup of tea.


Josh Interesting thought about Hardy, I agree he probably didn't care for babies or children in his books. In Jude the Obscure he kills them off in a pretty gruesome way from what I recall LOL
