Beth | 126 comments Hello everyone,
I've been remiss about creating my own author forum here. I write the Claire Hanover gift basket designer mystery series (A Real Basket Case, a 2007 Best First Novel Agatha Award finalist, and To Hell in a Handbasket, 2009) and the Rocky Mountain Outdoor Adventures mystery series starring whitewater river ranger Mandy Tanner. The first, Deadly Currents, will be released March 8th. I live in Colorado and enjoys its many outdoor activities, including skiing, hiking, and whitewater rafting. I love talking to book clubs, too, via speakerphone or Skype.

I have an author Q&A discussion group on Goodreads that is currently open at: http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/1... . Please join and ask me a question there!

Also, I'm conducting a virtual book tour at the moment. You can see the schedule at: http://bethgroundwater.com/2011_Virtu... . Every comment on one of my guest blog posts is an entry into a contest for a free copy of Deadly Currents.

Please visit my website at http://bethgroundwater.com/ and enter a free mystery books contest by signing up for my email newsletter. Lastly, I hope you'll check out my blog at http://bethgroundwater.blogspot.com/.

Beth | 126 comments Along with the March release of Deadly Currents, I've got a short story, "Fatal Fish Flop," in the new Fish Tales: The Guppy Anthology Fish Tales The Guppy Anthology by Ramona DeFelice Long .

It's available as both a trade paperback and ebook and is an excellent collection of murderous short stories. They were all written by members of the Sisters in Crime Guppies chapter.

Happy reading, everyone!

Beth | 126 comments To bring you up-to-date on Deadly Currents Deadly Currents (An RM Outdoor Adventures Mystery, #1) by Beth Groundwater , the first book in the Rocky Mountain Outdoor Adventures series starring whitewater river ranger Mandy Tanner, here's some of the favorable reviews it has received:

“Readers who enjoy fast-moving stories and wilderness environments will keep turning the pages of this promising series debut.”
-- Booklist Online, January 24, 2011

“Groundwater kicks off a new series that combines outdoor action with more than a modicum of old-fashioned detection.”
-- Kirkus Reviews, January 15, 2011

“This enjoyable first in a new cozy series from Groundwater introduces Mandy Tanner, ‘a brand new seasonal river ranger’ on Colorado's Arkansas River.”
-- Publisher's Weekly, January 10, 2011

“With a fresh locale and a spunky … heroine, this is a promising new series by the author of the gift-basket designer Claire Hanover mysteries.”
-- Library Journal, March 1, 2011

“Groundwater’s novel is filled with river lore, vivid descriptions, and loving depictions of the varied characters who make up the tight-knit community.”
-- Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine, June, 2011

-- Dru’s Book Musings, March 17, 2011

-- Gelati’s Scoop, March 1, 2011

“Deadly Currents leaves the readers thirsty for more. The writing is simple but superb, the characters come alive--rising from the pages because of their realistic depictions and dialogue.”
-- Miami Books Examiner, March 5, 2011

I hope you'll pick up a trade paperback or ebook copy and read it yourself! - Beth

Beth | 126 comments Here's an update on Deadly Currents Deadly Currents (An RM Outdoor Adventures Mystery, #1) by Beth Groundwater , the first book in my new Rocky Mountain Outdoor Adventures mystery series. First, a new review was included in Mystery Scene Magazine. Here's a pull quote:

"The amiable cast, along with Groundwater's fascinating firsthand knowledge of rafting, makes this a series worth watching."

And, I've got two signings coming up this weekend:

Saturday, May 28, 2011, 2 – 4 PM
Wine & Cheese Signing
Black Cat Books
720 Manitou Avenue, Manitou Springs, CO 80829

Sunday, May 29, 2001, 1 – 4 PM
Signing during Paddlefest at Colorado Kayak Supply
327 E Main Street, Buena Vista, CO 81211

Lastly, I signed a contract with Sniplits for them to produce an audio version of my comedic mystery short story, "Flamingo Fatality," that first appeared in the Manhattan Mysteries anthology in 2005.

Sean Cronin | 49 comments My nephew lives out there. I'll tell him about the book and signing. At 22, don't know if he'll go, but...

message 7: by Beth (new)

Beth | 126 comments Hi Sean,
My river ranger sleuth is 27, so I'm hoping the book will appeal to twenty-somethings as well as traditional mystery readers, especially since it contains whitewater rafting scenes. Does you nephew do any rafting?

message 8: by Sean (new)

Sean Cronin | 49 comments Thanks for asking. Well, his major activity is to party with girls.
He does more: ski, hike, bike, run. But girls are, apparently, top on his list.
If you send me a link to your local schedule, I'll make sure he gets it.

Beth | 126 comments I want to invite you all to read my blog posts, with most excellent photos taken by my husband, about my weekend spent at the FIBArk whitewater festival in Salida, CO. Yesterday's post was about my gig as the Parade VIP. Today's is about the whitewater competitions and my signing table with The Book Haven bookstore there, and tomorrow's will be about the always wild-and-crazy Hooligan Race complete with "Boris the Spider" and "The Natural Disasters." Have fun!

Beth | 126 comments I'm pleased to announce that my humorous mystery short story, "Flamingo Fatality," has been published in audio form by Sniplits and is available for purchase for only 99 cents at:
https://www.sniplits.com/storiesforau...

"Flamingo Fatality" first appeared in print form in 2005 in the Manhattan Mysteries anthology, that came about as the result of a short story contest held by the Great Manhattan Mystery Conclave held in Manhattan, Kansas. All of the stories selected for the anthology had to be set in Manhattan, as mine was. In the story, Diane is just enjoying a simple lunch hour walk when she discovers a dead pink flamingo and is thrust into the mystery behind it--accompanied by an eccentric old woman and a very handsome cop.

I'm very happy with the reading done by voice actress Kailey Bell, and I hope folks will purchase and listen to the story for a few good laughs. Sniplits has published two other mainstream fiction stories of mine, "Covered Dish Casseroles" and "Biscuit Connection," if you'd like to listen to other short stories written by moi. :)

Go to the website (http://www.mystericale.com/index.php?...) to read the whole review, but I loved the last two lines, "There's lots of suspects, plenty of excitement, and even some time for romance. Beth | 126 comments Whoo hoo! I'm excited. Kirkus Reviews came through for me again with another good review for one of my books. They gave away quite a bit of the plot of Wicked Eddies (release date May 8, the sequel to Deadly Currents) in the body of the review, so I'm not going to quote it all here, but here's the last line:

"Once again, Groundwater, mixing mystery with outdoor adventure, comes up with an excursion that will please most comers."
-- Kirkus Reviews, May 1, 2012

message 21: by Beth (new)

Beth | 126 comments May 8th is the official release date for Wicked Eddies (An RM Outdoor Adventures Mystery #2) by Beth Groundwater Wicked Eddies, but I know it's already on some bookstore shelves because some store owners have contacted me and asked me to sign stock. It's available for order on the Kindle, and the Nook page should be up on the release date or soon thereafter. I hope you'll all join me in celebrating the release by lifting a glass wherever you are!

message 25: by Beth (new)

Beth | 126 comments The trade paperback and ebook editions of the second book in my Claire Hanover gift basket designer mystery series, To Hell in a Handbasket To Hell in a Handbasket by Beth Groundwater will be released November 8th.

In the book, gift basket designer Claire Hanover is reluctantly enjoying a spring ski vacation with her family in Breckenridge, Colorado, when a bloodcurdling scream cuts the frigid air. Claire is appalled to find the sister of her daughter’s boyfriend dead on the slopes. Others assume the girl’s death was an accident, but Claire notices another pair of ski tracks veering dangerously into the victim’s path. To protect her daughter as incriminating clues surface, Claire unravels a chilling conspiracy.

To Hell in a Handbasket received some good reviews when it was first released in hardcover in 2009:

"Groundwater's second leaves the bunny slope behind, offering some genuine black-diamond thrills."
-- Kirkus Review, April 1, 2009

"How it all plays out makes for an engrossing and entertaining mystery that keeps you reading until the final page. Tightly plotted and very current, the story manages to keep you on the edge of your seat. Even though the physical violence is off screen, the tension comes from the potential danger to the characters you've met and come to be concerned about."
-- Gayle Surrette, Gumshoe Review, May 1, 2009

"Groundwater follows her Agatha-nominated debut with a solid mystery that should broaden her fan base."
-- Molly Weston, Meritorious Mysteries, May 5, 2009

"Don't mess with Mama Bear. Mothers will be able to identify with Claire Hanover, who goes into protective mode when her daughter is threatened in Beth Groundwater's To Hell in a Handbasket…Groundwater's book is a fast-paced family mystery, for readers who enjoy Diane Mott Davidson's books. The book has the same family feeling that Davidson's fans will appreciate."
-- Lesa Holstine, Lesa’s Book Critiques, May 24, 2009

Beth | 126 comments Hi everyone,
How important are reviews, either professional or amateur, in making your book reading selections? I address that subject in my blog at Inkspot, the blog for Midnight Ink authors, today at:
http://midnightwriters.blogspot.com/

Both professional and amateur reviews play a role in my own reading selections, so as an author I view them as being VERY important, especially ones from respected professional review publications like the Big Four. I was very, very pleased to receive a complimentary review for Fatal Descent on June 1st from Library Journal, which joins those the book has already received from Publishers Weekly and Kirkus Reviews. FATAL DESCENT even merited its own sub-heading, "River Tales," and who could complain about being compared to Nevada Barr!?

message 40: by Beth (new)

Beth | 126 comments Hi everyone,
I hope you'll join me in celebrating the release of the third book in my RM Outdoor Adventures series, Fatal Descent. Like the previous two books in the series, it has received good reviews, such as:

Groundwater’s third entry (after the Left Coast Crime Rocky Award finalist Wicked Eddies) is marked by an outdoorsy intensity and authentic sports chatter sure to resonate with Nevada Barr readers. Her methodical, gentle buildup mirrors the river’s course so that when the characters hit the rapids, life jackets are a must.
-- Library Journal, June 1, 2013

The tension runs high in Groundwater’s absorbing third RM Outdoor Adventures mystery … Scenic descriptions and folklore add atmosphere to a suspenseful tale.
-- Publishers Weekly, April 8, 2013

message 46: by Beth (new)

Beth | 126 comments Though some retailers are already selling and shipping copies, November 8th is the "official" release date for the third book in the Claire Hanover gift basket designer mystery series. It's bagged good reviews in all four of the major book review publications (see below). Here's the blurb:

When Claire Hanover saddles up for the opening event of her brother Charley's new riding stable, the last thing she expects is a murder investigation. Kyle Mendoza, one of the stable hands, is found dead in Gunpowder's stall. Everyone thinks the horse trampled him, until it's discovered someone killed Kyle before dragging him into the stall. Charley's troubles worsen with Kyle's family suing him and a rival stable owner wrangling up his clients, so Claire decides to find the real murderer before her brother's business is put out to pasture.

"Groundwater’s third series entry (after To Hell in a Handbasket) is an action-packed cozy that successfully weaves in her small business and disability awareness."
-- Library Journal, November 1, 2013

"Groundwater combines a satisfying mystery with aspects of riding life and a look at the illegal immigration issue. A good choice for fans of small-town amateur sleuths."
-- Booklist, Oct 1, 2013

"Groundwater’s well-crafted cozy comes complete with numerous red herrings and a picturesque setting."
-- Publisher's Weekly, Oct 8, 2013

"The latest starring Claire (To Hell in a Handbasket, 2012, etc.) packs in more action than a typical cozy."
-- Kirkus Reviews, August 11, 2013
