For this week's HMWY, let us know which books have bad cover art, but a great story. Ones you were thankful you bought/read even though the cover was less than luscious. ;)

Warning: Somewhere within this thread we began chatting about squid and octopi on covers, in books ... then, some started Googling pics --- Don't Do It! Ewww. You've been warned.

Steph (angel4492) | 28251 comments Off the top of my head I have to say Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels series. Definitely not going to win a cover art award, but are fantastic books.

Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1) by Ilona Andrews Magic Burns (Kate Daniels, #2) by Ilona Andrews Magic Strikes (Kate Daniels, #3) by Ilona Andrews Magic Bleeds (Kate Daniels, #4) by Ilona Andrews Magic Slays (Kate Daniels, #5) by Ilona Andrews

message 3: by Steph, Just keep swimming … (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 28251 comments Caitlin Kittredge's Nocturne City series were eh covers, but good books.

Night Life (Nocturne City, #1) by Caitlin Kittredge Pure Blood (Nocturne City, #2) by Caitlin Kittredge Second Skin (Nocturne City, #3) by Caitlin Kittredge

They got a bit better towards the end (4-5)

Witch Craft (Nocturne City, #4) by Caitlin Kittredge Daemon's Mark (Nocturne City, #5) by Caitlin Kittredge

Desperado (lethallovely) | 1360 comments On the Edge (The Edge, #1) by Ilona Andrews A Hunger Like No Other (Immortals After Dark, #2) by Kresley Cole First Drop of Crimson (Night Huntress World, #1) by Jeaniene Frost Nightwalker (Dark Days, #1) by Jocelynn Drake Thorn Queen (Dark Swan, #2) by Richelle Mead

Big One: A Witch's Beauty (Daughters of Arianne, #2) by Joey W. Hill

That is just nasty. I love the heroine & she DOES have tentacles & her & the hero DO engage in tentacle sex but...I don't need a visual of that shit. When my fiance saw this cover, he said "WTF, Amie?!? You're reading squid porn now?"

message 5: by Steph, Just keep swimming … (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 28251 comments LMAO!! That's really bad.

message 6: by Laura Lulu (new)

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments LMAO @ squid porn. Hey, squidmaids need lovin' too. ;)

message 7: by Josie (new)

Josie | 1967 comments Oh I could never read that book, just because some guys showed us some completely screwed up porn involving octopuses/squids (guys are strange I've now realised) and made me feel really ill. I now have a phobia of them. Funny how events can change you...

message 8: by Laura Lulu (new)

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments It took you that long to figure out guys are strange? Lol.

So no calamari for you? ;)

message 9: by Josie (new)

Josie | 1967 comments Urgh, I think I'd have to politely excuse myself from the table lol

Ha! Well I always had an incline that they were a little odd but it really just hit home how completely weird they are.

message 10: by Mariya (new)

Mariya (cr6zym0nkeyiz) | 87 comments I admit that the covers and description is what took me to read the Kate Daniels Series so long.

Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1) by Ilona Andrews Magic Burns (Kate Daniels, #2) by Ilona Andrews Magic Strikes (Kate Daniels, #3) by Ilona Andrews Magic Bleeds (Kate Daniels, #4) by Ilona Andrews Magic Slays (Kate Daniels, #5) by Ilona Andrews

Honestly, UGH! EWW!!! I think covers 1-3 are the worse thing ever. covers 4 on onward has been better to look at. well, I admit I really like covers 4-6

Moon Called (Mercedes Thompson, #1) by Patricia Briggs Blood Bound (Mercedes Thompson, #2) by Patricia Briggs Iron Kissed (Mercedes Thompson, #3) by Patricia Briggs

I read the Night Huntress Series on a recommendation. So, I don't think I would have read this if I wasn't recommendated it, and even after I was recommended this it took me while to read it. I think it would still be sitting in my TBR pile.
At Grave's End (Night Huntress, #3) by Jeaniene Frost First Drop of Crimson (Night Huntress World, #1) by Jeaniene Frost

I thinking right now that AGE and FDOC are the only horrible covers.

message 11: by Daffodil (new)

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 2098 comments Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changeling #1) by Nalini Singh is the one that comes to mind immediately. The pink cover in combination with the title gives the totally wrong impression. There's no indication of the fantastic world building/mythology and wonderful characters between the covers.

message 12: by Lisa M (new)

Lisa M (lamessegee) | 171 comments Some of mine have already been mentioned (ahem, First Drop of Crimson (Night Huntress World, #1) by Jeaniene Frost and A Hunger Like No Other (Immortals After Dark, #2) by Kresley Cole ) , so I'll only add:
Wicked Deeds on a Winter's Night (Immortals After Dark, #4) by Kresley Cole

CyberAlmu | 302 comments Mariya wrote: "Honestly, UGH! EWW!!! I think covers 1-3 are the worse thing ever. covers 4 on onward has been better to look at. well, I admit I really like covers 4-6"

The Spanish editions for the first 2 book (the only ones been translated) have a totally different cover. The curious thing is that this same cover was "assigned" to the World of the Lupi series! So you have Peligro tentador by Eileen Wilks for Tempting Danger (World of the Lupi, #1) by Eileen Wilks .. and so on

message 14: by Akaria (new)

Akaria Gale | 3 comments Seconding the Psy-Changeling series for horrible covers. That pink! Oh so cheesy but the story is oh so good!

I have several Joey Hill books on my TBR list but that one is really scary!

message 15: by Lisa M (last edited Mar 02, 2011 02:36PM) (new)

Lisa M | 43 comments Hmmm, these aren't necessarily "bad" covers, but the new Anita Blake covers are just odd. One has a corkscrew or something on it. Another, scissors. And in those books, I don't remember any of those items being in the story, much less deserving a cover picture.

A few of them, in no particular order:
Blood Noir (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, #16) by Laurell K. Hamilton Skin Trade (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, #17) by Laurell K. Hamilton Flirt (Anita Blake Vampire Hunter Series #18) by Laurell K. Hamilton Obsidian Butterfly (Anita Blake Vampire Hunter Series #9) by Laurell K. Hamilton Blue Moon (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, #8) by Laurell K. Hamilton

(I couldn't find the corkscrew one, but I know I've seen it.)

message 16: by Desperado (new)

Desperado (lethallovely) | 1360 comments I agree, Lisa. I liked LKH's older covers better. But I have forsaken her so I don't have to worry about her new covers anyway.

Here's the one for Hit List: Hit List (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, #20) by Laurell K. Hamilton At least this one lets you know what you're in for...

message 17: by Literary Ames (last edited Mar 02, 2011 03:36PM) (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments LMAO @ squid porn

I love calamari and apparently so does this guy...

Oh dear, someone get Josie a bucket! Oops, too late -Clean up, aisle 5...

message 18: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments Shelly Laurenston's covers aren't great but they're brilliant books. The newer covers are better:

The Mane Attraction (Pride, #3) by Shelly Laurenston Pack Challenge Magnus Pack, Book 1 by Shelly Laurenston Here Kitty, Kitty! (Magnus Pack, #3) by Shelly Laurenston Here Kitty, Kitty! (Magnus Pack, #3) by Shelly Laurenston Hunting Season (The Gathering, #1) by Shelly Laurenston

Some hot men but not very artistic covers, if that makes sense.

Desperado (lethallovely) | 1360 comments OMFG! OMFG! OMFG! That is so scary!

Have I mentioned that I'm afraid of squid? And octopi? And cuttlefish? I refuse to take bubblebaths because I've somehow convinced myself they are hiding under the bubbles.

I've given up on her too. But at least that new cover makes sense with the way the books are going.

message 23: by Desperado (new)

Desperado (lethallovely) | 1360 comments My thoughts exactly, Lisa! "Hit List" screams "You want to read a novel full of kinky creepiness & a heroine who's naked for most of the book? Then this is the book for YOU!"

But at the same time, I'm tempted to google "squid porn" and see what pops up...

ETA:
Ew, ew, triple ew. Don't google it.

Steph (angel4492) | 28251 comments LMAO! Now I gotta google it!

message 29: by Kerstin (last edited Mar 02, 2011 11:48PM) (new)

Kerstin | 862 comments Alright girls, now you made me curious!

ETA: ...Ok...should not have googled that at all!

message 30: by Steph, Just keep swimming … (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 28251 comments LMAO!! Seriously, sometimes saying "Don't" is a lure you can't resist, but then ya quickly realize, "Yeah, shouldn't have done that!"

message 31: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 03, 2011 12:00AM) (new)

Squid porn was not what I expected to find when looking through this thread! Of course I couldn't resist googleing either... I'll just quote Vivian: "Ew, ew, triple ew." o:

message 32: by Kerstin (new)

Kerstin | 862 comments So true Steph, lol. The two of us being a shining example ;)

message 33: by Josie (new)

And Ames. That picture is Life Shattering.

message 36: by Josie (last edited Mar 03, 2011 03:36PM) (new)

Josie | 1967 comments Steph!! STEPH!!! HELP!! You need to put some kind of warning on this thread, it doesn't have squid-porn-and-pics-which-will-something-inside-you-die as the title!! And I didn't remember that this is that thread!!

And Ames, what did you expect? I'm intrigued.

Oh and side note I saw two girls, one octopus. If anyone was wondering... no? Understandable, I guess.

message 37: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (last edited Mar 03, 2011 03:52PM) (new)

Sandra | 23494 comments Now you've got me intrigued, off to google.

That was ..... I'm speechless. Ewww ....

message 38: by Josie (last edited Mar 03, 2011 03:52PM) (new)

Josie | 1967 comments Lol! I find it hilarious that you've all googled it and no matter that you delete your history, it'll be there to be found by either a loved one who will assume that you are weird and not talk to you again, or a stranger, like an IT tech person come to fix your computer. He will either say two thing, neither which are positive
"oh no, you are messed up! what's wrong with you" or even worse;
"wow, i've er, never met someone who shares my fetish, you know, i have a fish tank at home..."
Annddd, that's where I'm going to stop before I make myself ill. But if it helps, I'm sure it's lurking on my laptop somewhere, waiting... :/

message 39: by Literary Ames (last edited Mar 03, 2011 03:56PM) (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments OMG I can't breathe -LMAO! But I'm slightly worried now.

Josie wrote: "And Ames, what did you expect? I'm intrigued."

I don't know, just not THAT. The pic I posted was tame in comparison. "On" is very different to "in", if you know what I mean.

message 40: by Josie (new)

Josie | 1967 comments Lol!! It's definitely not the same but now, after all we've suffered through, it makes no difference. Question is, will you be able to eat squid now? Or read A Witch's Beauty (Daughters of Arianne, #2) by Joey W. Hill ? Talk about killing a book in one thread ;)

message 41: by Wan (new)

Wan (wanwaddell) | 612 comments Here are mine. Yikes!
Awaken Me Darkly (Alien Huntress, #1) by Gena Showalter and Enslave Me Sweetly (Alien Huntress, #2) by Gena Showalter .

I totally agree with Mercedes Thompson first 3. The visible underwear's the worst.

message 42: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments It tastes yummy so I think I can, not sure about the book. It's got high ratings so I'd be happy to try it, can't guarantee I'd finish it though.

message 43: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 23494 comments I just can't believe they went with that cover A Witch's Beauty (Daughters of Arianne, #2) by Joey W. Hill it's just hideous.

Whilst I love calamari, don't know about this book, just Eeww.

@Wan, agree entirely with GS & the visible undie thing.

message 44: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments Hehe, I knew if I said that, others wouldn't be able to resist. I know, evil, but if my eyes suffer, so do yours.

@Josie - And yes, I totally thought about how it's now on my computer that I googled squid porn and it almost prevented me from doing it, but curiosity won out.
And two girls and an octopus - that was the most disturbing. There's fetishes for everything I guess...

Back to bookcovers, and totally tame in comparison, but On the Edge (The Edge, #1) by Ilona Andrews was a little too Harlequin Romance looking for me (which is totally not my kinda thing), but loved the book.

LOL! Look that the thread title now. >:)

And I totally agree w/the On Edge books. Ilona and Gordon are FANTASTIC (understatement) authors, but their covers .... eh.

message 46: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 23494 comments ROFLMAO at the new title name!!!!!!!!!

You just know more pple will google it now.

message 47: by Josie (last edited Mar 04, 2011 02:57AM) (new)

Josie | 1967 comments Lol!! Well done Steph! And yes, curiousity will kill the cat...

Yeah, I really don't like that cover either. The girl and car's fine but the guy... eek! I prefer letting my imagination do the work rather than being influenced by a cover and if you don't find the guy attractive then it does spoil it. That's why I don't mind when their heads are chopped off since everyone's taste is different!

ETA: And try as I might, I could not change how he looked throughout the whole book! >:(

message 48: by Daffodil (new)

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 2098 comments Curiosity, no curiosity here. Whistles and sidesteps any possible lightning bolt strikes.

The only thing saving me from self-inflicted blindness is the fact I'm accessing the internet from work. There is no way I want that in my computer history at work.

message 49: by Lisa M (new)

Lisa M | 43 comments ROFL! It's so hysterical how this went from a book cover thread to a squid porn thread. XD

I have not googled it (and that's probably a good thing), but it's insanely tempting. However, my husband does all the IT stuff on my comp, and my girls use it sometimes, so I'm just not going to tempt fate. I can only imagine what would happen if I picked up a virus and he looked into it. "So, dear, exactly what site did you go to?" "Uhhh, er, um ..." I don't even want to think of my daughters somehow finding it (since Google lists recent searches on the side). >.<

ohhh and seriously - don't google Squid Porn - I nearly threw up.....
