a)Groove along
b)Shake your fist at the screen and shout "sellout!"
c)?

I hate when a song I really like is covered by an artist I don't like for the sake of a commercial. There was an awful version of Space Oddity that some car company was using last year. And the Mazda "zoom zoom" song is a traditional capoeira song that makes my sister despair whenever she hears it commercialized. And I hate it when a song I like is licensed and played to death for the sake of a commercial, like Arcade Fire's "Wake Up" in last year's super bowl.

That said, there have been a couple of really good uses of late:
1)The same "Wake Up" was far better suited to the trailer for Where The Wild Things Are.
2)The car commercial that just started using Dawes' "When My Time Comes"
3)The car commercials that use Band of Horses.

Lyzzibug ~Still Breathing~ (lyzzibug) | 708 comments I usually groove along with the song. Gets a laugh out of my 1 yr old which is always great.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments The most confusing one for me was The Pogues' "If I Should Fall From Grace With God" in a Subaru commercial. This makes no sense to me on about 100 levels.

The lyrics are about death and British politics.

Subaru?

Nope. Just watching these makes me feel as if I'm about to birth a bowling ball.

I feel the same way about the cruise commercials that use Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life."
They always seem to fade out before they have to find a way to incorporate the line "of course I've had it in the ear before" into their images of buffets and climbing walls and on deck swimming pools.

Aynge (ayngemac) | 1202 comments It depends. If it's a song I cherish I get peeved. I don't like it associated with something commercial, but really what can I do about it?

On the other hand, I've discovered a lot of great music via commercials. "Days Go By" by Dirty Vegas is still in regular rotation on my iPod. That was in a Mitsubishi ad. "Bossa per Du" was another song I got from a car commercial. I think it was the VW Passat, where the rain stops when the driver pushes a button in the car. Cool commerical, awesome song.

Lila | 146 comments I HATE IT!!!!!!!! It totally ruins the song. It becomes that song from that commercial. They should come up with their own songs to sell their products.

Gus Sanchez (gussanchez) I honestly don't buy into the "selling out" accusations. Pete Townshend once wrote, "they're my songs, and I'll do with them what I please." Of course, if "Squeeze Box" were ever used to sell Kotex tampons, I think I'd want to kill one of my heroes.

And for what it's worth, if I hear a song on a commercial that I like, chances are I'm going to find and download that song.

Yeah, oddly, I don't mind hearing a song in a commercial and seeking it out.
But I sometimes get jealous when I hear a song I already know and love in a commercial, because then too many people will know about it, and it'll get overplayed. Perverse, I know.

Also, I get annoyed when the song doesn't match the commercial at all. Like the aforementioned Lust for Life. And why is Morphine's "Thursday" being used to sell trucks? Did Mark Sandman's protagonist drive a truck to the Wagon Wheel for the trysts? It makes no sense.

We used to meet every Thursday Thursday Thursday
in the afternoon

Brittomart I don't know who said this, but I remember when Phoenix performed on SNL, and some comedian was like, 'I had never heard of this band, and then I saw their performance, and I thought, 'Wait a minute, I've bought 5 pairs of jeans to this song!"
