there are a few books that need to be combined.
(http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/77... and http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/85...)
(http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/85... and http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/69...)
(http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/85... and http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/78...)
Also I believe this one (http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/85...) is just a single comic not a trade paperback and should therefore be deleted, though I'm not certain. Then again, the fourth volume is very new so this "#5" is very likely to be wrong one way or another.
Thanks in advance!

Done.

Andy | 136 comments http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/52...
and
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/46...
should obviously be combined, but do we ignore the spelling of the author's name on the cover to do it? I would, but just trying to make sure.
Thanks.

In general, yes. In this specific case, where the author is a GR member who has chosen to spell their name with the initial on the GR profile, definitely.

I merged the two author profiles.

uh... Is that something more involved than editing the author name in the book record? I may have screwed up something if it is. Please let me know.

Andy wrote: "Is that something more involved than editing the author name in the book record?"

Yes. Editing a book record changes the author for a specific book, but has not affect on the author profile previously associated with the book. Which is exactly what you want if only some of the books are under the wrong author; it's not the preference when you want ALL the books to move over. In that case, you edit the AUTHOR profile (not the book) to match the other. The system then asks you which one to keep, transfers all books, fans, etc. to that one, and deletes the other profile.

Since this one involved a GR author, you would not have been able to do the author merge anyway.

message 7: by Andy (new)

Andy | 136 comments :-) So if I understand correctly, I didn't screw up cause I don't have the rights to screw that up, right?

The book in question was http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/47...

Thanks again for your patience.

message 8: by Andy (last edited Feb 23, 2011 09:52AM) (new)

Andy | 136 comments I'm guessing if I hadn't changed the book record, ... the books would still have to be combined anyway, but it would have removed the problem with them being two separate authors. :-s

(when you merged the authors)

message 9: by rivka, Librarian Moderator (new)

rivka | 42491 comments Mod
Editing the book alone would NOT constitute screwing up, anyway. It fixes the issue for the book -- it just leaves an "empty" author. Which Otis has said isn't a problem. (It does make some of us more OCD-type librarians a bit twitchy. ;) )

message 10: by Andy (new)

Andy | 136 comments Believe it or not, the orphaned author was exactly what I was worried about. :-\ I was considering changing the book record back, but didn't know if that would create a different Richard Cytowic instead of reconnecting to the existing one so I just left it alone.
(sigh)
I have so much to learn about just using the system, let alone recommending changes.

message 11: by rivka, Librarian Moderator (new)

rivka | 42491 comments Mod
Changing it back would not create a new author profile -- unless the old one was already deleted/merged. But neither would it take care of there being more profiles than there ought to be.

message 20: by Brian (new)

Brian (bper) | 64 comments Was wondering about these two:

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/69...
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/86...

I haven't (nor can I) read the German book (second), so I can't verify for sure that they're the same work. I would have also guessed that since Chris Ayres (co-author) is a goodreads author that they would've already been combined if they should be. So I didn't want to combine books prematurely and wanted to appeal to more seasoned librarians.

Thanks!

And as an aside, is this a good thread to post questions about specific book combinations, or should I create separate a separate thread for each case I have questions about?

Double thanks!

message 21: by rivka, Librarian Moderator (new)

rivka | 42491 comments Mod
WorldCat confirms they are the same. I have combined them.

This thread is fine; a new one would be fine as well.

message 22: by Brian (new)

Brian (bper) | 64 comments Oh, good tip for future reference, thanks!

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

This one: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/10... is the dutch translation of this one: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/28...

PS. Maybe an idea to make this thread sticky just like the GR author merge?

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

I meant to add this one: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/10... as an edition (translation) of this one: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/97..., but somehow it didn't work and it appeared on its own.

Silvana (silvanajoanna) | 2 comments Got it done, Ruud.

message 26: by Cait (new)

Cait (tigercait) | 5005 comments Ruud, it's generally a better idea to make a new thread for each book. That way it's easy for people to see what's already been done.

Brittany (weareattached) | 43 comments Also
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/95...
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/10...

are just the paperback version to go with
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/11...
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/11...
These ebook versions, I can't seem to combine them though.

Also the author page for the ebook titles should be deleted, because it only has those 2 ebooks listed.

message 29: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 2459 comments 27 - Looks like someone took care of this.

28/29 - Taken care of. Brittany, you couldn't combine them because the two physical books were under C.C. Hunter and the two ebook versions were under C.^C. Hunter (^ being a space), you can only combine books with the same primary author. I changed the author to C.C. Hunter and combined them.

message 30: by Autosuggestion (new)

Autosuggestion | 2 comments Hello.
I'm new to this so I could need a little help:
These two books are combined but they are in fact two different books
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/52...

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/92...

It's from the same series but one is Gedichte (poems) and the other one is Briefe (letters). How can I split them?
Thank you.

message 31: by Jared (new)

Jared (wisthrop) | 170 comments 31 - I was able to get these split for you. You go on the combine page and click separate.

These two still need to be combined into one book, they are the same edition

Can you double check these links? They linked me to different books entirely.

Jmpc | 1 comments I tried to add another edition to Robinson Crusoe but seemed to add a whole new book. Does it need to be combined?

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/11...
(new edition)

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/34...
(normal)

message 42: by Sandi (new)

Sandi You did it right. Whenever you create a new edition it needs to be combined with the other editions afterwards. I combined them for you.

message 43: by Anicka (new)

Anicka | 25 comments Hello!

I created a romanian edition of http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/55... . Why doesn't it appear in the "other editions" section?
This is the book I created. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/11...

The same with http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/60... and http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/11... .

Thank you!

message 44: by Sandra (new)

Sandra | 23832 comments Anicka, once you create the new edition, you then need to combine it. If you are a librarian you can do that, otherwise post it here and we'd be happy to do that for you.

I've combined both books for you :)

message 46: by Anicka (new)

Anicka | 25 comments Ohh thank you very much, Sandra. I'll keep that in mind next time I will create books. :D

Thank you again.

Should you still be able to see 2 books under the Other Editions area on the book page?

I was thinking those other 2 would go away. They can be totally deleted (put up by accident).
