MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments March 6th - March 12th is Read an E-book Week! Here's a great freebie for that time frame:

Read an Ebook Week freebies from BeWrite Books

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This will be the eighth year BeWrite Books has supported 'Read an Ebook Week' (RAEBW) -- but this time with more reason, more enthusiasm and more ebook giveaways for everyone than ever before.

Check it out at our blog: http://www.bewritebooks.blogspot.com

We support Calibre, MobileRead and the DRM-Free campaign as well as RAEBW itself. So above and beyond the offers you can read about there, we have a special bonus for our MR pals.

Just include the words 'Mobile Read Member' in your email to the special new RAEBW@bewrite.net address (not hyperlinked here, so please just copy and paste into your email address bar -- live from March 5 to March 13 to take into account international time zones) and choose any two books from our catalogue in the format of your choice (please don't forget to specify format) and we'll send them free of charge by return. There's no need for you to comply with the 'conditions' for other freebie claimants.

message 32: by Jessica (last edited Mar 25, 2011 09:01AM) (new)

Jessica | 6 comments So, I live in NC and there's a couple of libraries that use Overdrive to offer ebooks and audiobooks to their patrons. They still have a checkout period and only a certain number of people can check them out at a time, so you're often put on a waiting list. They're also drm'ed so they can only be viewed/played on adobe reader and Windows media player. After your time is up, they disappear from your computer until you check them out again.

However, there are tools around this-- such as some Calibre add-ins and software such as Soundtaxi.

Just fyi. ;)

message 33: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, *good karma* (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments Jessica, you just made me sooo jealous! :-)

I'm from NC and we had a great library system in my county. Here? It's crap on a stick. Nothing's here cause no one here reads. The libraries suck and that's all of them. They hardly have any good ebooks (the audio books are a lot better but it's all stuff I've already read and I hate audio books). *huff*

message 34: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 6 comments Does anyone you know still happen to live in NC? I actually use my parents library account to check out online books from Guilford County. I live in Durham co, and they have an entirely different selection of books online.

I'm from Durham!!!! Hiya neighbor!

My dad still lives in Durham but he won't read unless forced...except he read one of Eddings's series once (but he was sick in the hospital at the time and didn't have access to good cable...)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments The Free Ebook of the Month for April is Victoria Strauss’ The Arm of the Stone. Here is what critics said when it first came out:

Treated with unusual depth.”—Locus

“An intelligent, fascinating novel...the complicated politics and social structure of this world give it a depth most fantasy novels lack.”—SF Site

“Compelling...a most unusual and fascinating novel.”—Anne McCaffrey

“A rich story about human nature, this fantasy is a thought-provoking page-turner. The characters are deeply etched, and the plot turns are credible yet arresting...A thoroughly enjoyable read.”—Kliatt

More details and the link for the free book, as usual, on our catalogue site, http://www.PPickings.com

The coupon code for April is 9992593 and is good from now through April 30th.

Tracey (stewartry) I can contribute a little: Free storage and for-dummies-like-me file sharing - www.dropbox.com/

Steven Brust's Firefly novel: http://dreamcafe.com/firefly.html

I haven't had the chance to wander through here yet, but "Listing over 1 million free books on the Web - Updated Thursday, April 7, 2011" ... *bites knuckle*
http://digital.library.upenn.edu/books/

Bookswaps (clear out your shelves of duplicates and those one or two books you can part with):
www.paperbackswap.com (my favorite; it's not just paperbacks) (ooh, I have a credit!)
www.bookmooch.com

CD swap - swapacd.com
and DVD's - swapadvd.com

LibraryThing's Early Reviewers giveaways: http://www.librarything.com/er/list
(Look for me if you're on LT: I'm traste)
And in case you're as slow as me, Goodreads's: http://www.goodreads.com/giveaway
(I didn't know it existed for months)

And finally a site I couldn't live without ... well, I could, but I would be unhappier (though there would be more room in my house):
www.booksalefinder.com/
- All of the Friends of the Library sales, participating bookstore deals, book fairs ... My two favorite book sales are coming up this month!

Great idea, MrsJ, thanks.

The book came out in 2010 and it's For Heaven's Eyes Only: A Secret Histories Novel that isn't out until June 2011... *facepalm*

...in case anyone wonders why Borders is going out of business...
