Adam Belcher I loved the way this book was written. I thought the way that Spufford managed to blend so many different styles and make it accessible and easy to follow and, most of all, riveting was so brilliant and different from any other book that I have read. I believe that it is technically classed as a piece of Cultural Materialism. But have any one else read any similar books? Leviathan by Philip Hoare and Sexual Dissidence by Jonathan Dollimore are the only other books that I've managed to find.

macartain Thats a big ask, but for some reason I find myself wanting to recommend you to Peter Davidson's lovely 'The Idea of North'. That's on the basis of the subject matter as much as the approach - although Davidson also casts a wide net when seeking insight to cultural responses to the North, he doesn't equal the reach of Spufford.
