I love the Brianna/Roger storyline! Their story becomes important in the upcoming books.

I really didn't like the Brianna/Roger storyline at first. Actually for like 2 books lol. But it grew on me by the end of the series. I like them now. I thought they were so boring at first though.
I was definitely not thrilled with the Roger/Bree story line either, Vanessa. I didn't find their coming together or their personalities the least bit interesting. Now, I really enjoy them. I don't yawn everytime one of their bits comes up.
Nobody can compare to Jamie and Claire. :-) I found Bree/Roger a bit boring at first, but they grew on me quickly.
I think Jamie and William being together while going to Ana ooka was so sweet. But the scene with Claire and lord John was very juicy.
You are getting to some awesome parts, Vanessa!! Keep us posted. Your excitement has me reliving that glorious portion of the story.

I have to say DOA has been much faster paced than the previous books, imo. I was afraid it would drag on forever before Bree made it to the colonies. However, it was just like BAM she was there and Roger set out looking for her. I am very glad for that because there have been times I just wanted to skip page after page of subplots and monologues of secondary characters and get to the point. To my suprise DOA has been anything but slow paced or boring.
Oh don't skip anything. It all comes around and then you understand. You'll realize that when you re-read.
Annie wrote: "Oh don't skip anything. It all comes around and then you understand. You'll realize that when you re-read."I haven't, what I was saying is that at times I felt like it. Being 4 books into the series, one thing I learned is that everything and everyone in the story, matters. ;)
Thanks for the tip anyway.
I wanted to skip so much as well. I found there were a lot of smaller plots that were a tad on the boring side. However now I wish I had paid more attention to them because most of them do come into play or at least a character does later and it's nice to know the back ground. Oh well, I'll do better when I eventually read them all again. :)
I have made it to the part where Jamie and bree go hunting for bees. That entire chapter was so beautifully written. It really touched me. I cried when Jamie said bree must go back and he and Claire talked about Faith. It was so bitter sweet when Jamie said he left violets on her grave.he is such a romantic character in every sense of the word.
The second part of DoA is jam packed with happenings, isn't it?! I did love the father-daughter bee chat. Watching those two get to know each other was very sweet. That said, I had one of my few stirrings of annoyance at Jamie for his treatment of Roger. The mix-up was understandable, but still! And I love Lord John. I think he's hilarious, in his dry way.Just finished Fiery Cross a couple hours ago. Still decompressing from that one. Took me two months to listen to the whole thing! I never read it, so it was all new to me. I had read books 1-3, and part of DoA, but I found listening easier especially when it wasn't as action-packed. Now I am addicted to the listening!
I'm actually really liking this one the further I get into it. There were some parts that I felt were dragging (Claire trogging through a rain-soaked forest) but it picks back up again. Bree hasn't come through yet; I just finished the chapter where Claire realizes that the mysterious skeleton she found has silver caps on its molars. That definitely makes me want to keep reading! :)
Just you wait, Kaitlyn. Other than Outlander, DoA was my favorite of the series so far. Then again, I'm only up to A Breath of Snow & Ashes.

I enjoyed Dragonfly and Voyager, but Outlander will always be my favorite I think. I just LOVE Scotland!
Never been to Scotland. It's on my bucket list but I'm afraid of getting there and not finding Jamie waiting! :)
I've read all of the books, but Outlander and Dragonfly in Amber are my favorites, especially Outlander. There is no better fictional hero in my mind better than James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser.
Burbanista wrote: "Amen to that! I'm only up to 50-year old Jamie, but he keeps getting better and better!"Yes, he does!!!!

I heard that! He is the best fictional male character I have ever come across. No one has booted him out of the #1 spot and I'm an avid reader. I don't think anyone could ever top James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser anyway...no matter how many books I read :D

Love this!

I also want to say, I feel for Roger. I mean James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser is his father in law. What a big pair of shoes to fill! I really like reading Rogers feeling and thoughts on Jemmy and Jamie hiring Mr. Bug as his right hand man instead of himself (Roger). Also, I really love seeing Jamie as a grandfather!
I must say that the book isn't charged with action but it is rich in the details of the characters thoughts and feelings and enriching the relationships of the characters.
I love FC, just finished it on my 5th readthru. It has more iconic moments than most of the previous. Next to Outlander itself, it is my favorite. And yes, you just have to love Roger. Seems he is always on the short end of the stick. I think he comes into his own in this book.
I just finished the chapter where Brianna FINALLY figures out that Jaime saw Roger...and beat his ass. Those last few chapters were so frustrating. They kept having these conversations, just not the right conversation.I do love it when Brianna and Jamie get into it though! And of course, Ian's marriage proposal. Ian is the definition of adorable. :)
Now back to reading!

I am still reading DoA. I almost stopped after the meeting of Jamie and Roger. I thought Jamie too brutal for only having second hand info. I thought it a little out of character, but only a little as his reasons could have clouded his judgement. Then the lie!!! Well, I had to go to outlander wiki to get the spoilers or I could not continue. I have never before felt that way. I simply could not continue without knowing (view spoiler) . Anyone else ever feel that way?
Mia wrote: "I am still reading DoA. I almost stopped after the meeting of Jamie and Roger. I thought Jamie too brutal for only having second hand info. I thought it a little out of character, but only a little..."No I thought it was completely in keeping with both the time and Jamie/Ian. As far as they know, Bree was raped. Lizzy saw her screaming with a guy and then saw the 'evidence'. Both men, but especially Jamie, are protectors to their very bones... and that she was hurt while trying to find her way to them... I'm a little surprised Roger walked - literally - away from the fight.
As for the time period? It's not like they are going to take her to counseling... I'm not certain, but I think it would be more likely for them to blame Bree/the victim for the entire incident and shun her.
...forgot to add... Yes, very hard to read! And I was wishing they'd sort it all out the whole way thru.
Out of all the books, that is the storyline that I really dislike. The whole mixed up info, everyone only knowing parts of the story, jumping to conclusions etc etc. Really Frustrating.I also blamed Bree for not telling the whole story
Mia wrote: "I am still reading DoA. I almost stopped after the meeting of Jamie and Roger. I thought Jamie too brutal for only having second hand info. Please help. I am confused about the relationship between Roger and Geillis and the couple on the boat with the baby. I know Geillis switched out her child somewhere. The term "changeling" was used somewhere, and Roger ended up naming his child that Jem, which I believe was the name of the baby. Was that the changeling? Did that child survive?
William Buccleigh MacKenzie was the child Geillis and Dougal had together. Dougal gave him to another couple who named him William after the child they had just lost, thus, the changeling child. William and Morag had a child, Jeremiah (or Jemmy), also Roger's middle name.
So the "changeling" was the father of the baby Jem on the boat. He (the dad William) has more parts coming up in the series so it is good to know who he is.
I don't think so - the whole family is together later in the series and I cannot remember any mentioning of him being thrown off. I could be wrong though.
So why did Roger help the mother and the baby while they were hiding in the hold of the ship when the baby had a rash that could have been smallpox? where was the dad? This is going to require a reread!
Roger helped them because it was the right thing to do and he believed Morag when she told him that the baby just had a fever from nursing or something like that.He helped them because he knew they were his ancestors. He felt connected. William was above with the other children I believe and he sent Morag and the baby to hide below for their safety.
