Slip! | 89 comments Oh my gosh. I don't think Fergus has ever been a favorite of mine, but I never DISLIKED him...until now!!

Arlene | 255 comments @ Arya - He does some lousy things but think of what he has been through. He is one of those characters that add a realistic element of surprise to the books. No one is all good or all bad.

Slip! | 89 comments Will SOMEBODY please email me and spoil the book for me? Please??
Does Roger seeking to be a minister mean he leaves Bree? I didn't think Minisfers could be married....????
SOMEBODY SPOIL EVERYTHING AND TELL ME WHAT HAPPENS

message 254: by M. (new)

M. MacKinnon | 121 comments Priests cannot marry; ministers can. Does that help some?

message 255: by Slip! (new)

Slip! | 89 comments Still. He's gonna leave then. And I'm gonna kill DG.
....AFTER the 9th comes out.

message 256: by Diane (new)

Diane | 1360 comments Who knows what DG will do in the future but in my personal opinion, Roger would NEVER leave Bree and his family willingly. Presbyterian ministers can be married if he went that rout it would be with Bree.

this is the funniest thing ive seen for ages! ... I cant believe you're not inundated with people wanting to blab it all lol

message 258: by Lois (new)

Lois I just finished ABOSAA for the first time last night...and OMG, it was amazing! (Though I don't expect anything less from DG, to be honest.) Some questions though - how old is Jemmy in the epilogue? Is he old enough to remember Claire, Jamie, Ian etc, when ten years or so have gone by?

message 259: by Lois (new)

Lois I also noticed a narrative mistake toward the end (page 1297 in my copy; Chapter 113) *cackle* - it was in Roger's third person perspective (obvious from the sentence '...and Roger felt a nervous qualm in the pit of his stomach.') prior to the battle, and yet there is sentence in the fourth paragraph which reads '...and I made no sense of them.' I, as in Claire! Ooooh...

That doesn't confirm the FACT. It just confirms that Roger is still in the running... Cause we don't know if the other party does/doesn't have them. Same with the earlier offer of the blood test, could confirm only that the question was still open, or that Jems blood type was so different, it couldn't be him. There was nothing they could do in those days... and possibly in the books modern times to confirm that Jem is def Rogers, they would only ever be able to confidently rule him out.

MichaelCollins | 819 comments Just finished Fiery Cross -- things sure came thick and fast last 100 pages.

Now onto A Breath of Snow and Ashes -- just d/l the kindle version which I will jump into after dinner and hope I get some sleep tonite lol

Card carrying and proud of it -- there are no 12 step programs I think in the Outlander universe. Closest thing might be the novella off shoots.

But I won't worry about those until I finish the main novels

message 264: by Diane (new)

Diane | 1360 comments Outlander 12 step program
1. Join Good Reads Outlander Series group
2. Post often
3. Read the novellas
4. Re read Outlander
5. Read the Lord John books
6. Watch Outlander on Stars
7. Read Diana's blog
8. Research medicinal herbs
9. Try Recipes from Outlander Kitchen Outlander Kitchen The Official Outlander Companion Cookbook by Theresa Carle-Sanders
10. Buy, read and refer back to The Outlandish Companion Companion to Outlander, Dragonfly in Amber, Voyager, and Drums of Autumn by Diana Gabaldon
11. Buy, read and refer back to The Outlandish Companion Volume Two (Outlander) by Diana Gabaldon
12. Learn and use some phrases in Gaelic

Ministers of the Protestant Faith (Calvinists, Episcopalians, Lutherans, Presbyterians, etc) can marry and even encouraged to be married.
Catholic Priests do not marry. They take vows of celibacy. Roger is Church of Scotland which means he is a Presbyterian (Calvinist tradition founded by John Knox who studied under John Calvin. The Church of Scotland was in 1560 when they separated from the Catholic Church). This is the national church of Scotland. In England the national church is the Anglican Church (they separated from the Catholic church in 1534) the eqiuvalent in the US are the Episcopalians....they are part of the Anglican community. Hope this helps.

It is comforting to have so many addicted and needing the 12 step program for Outlanders.

Unfortunately , having to endure Droughtlander until Spring is a special burden to the addiction

Oh there need not be a particular order and you can certainly add more. (that is just what I could come up with) Maybe Outlander's need more like a 12+ step program :)

So tired of Droughtlander I actually watched S2 last ep which was a mistake as it made my cravings go up lol

MichaelCollins | 819 comments Now I'm at the part where Bri is thinking of getting hot water and has played with phosphorus.

Must be tough as a 20th cent engineer living in the 18th cent!

message 275: by MichaelCollins (new)

MichaelCollins | 819 comments So far its kind of a depressing book -- at the part where Jamie and Ian encounter the Indian brothers who had just had a wife kidnapped and were in dire circumstaces.

Semms like more people you come across in this book are poor a or captive or disabled.

Bree is Catholic...Roger is not he was brought up in the Church of Scotland which is essentually Presbyterian;therefore, he can marry.

MichaelCollins | 819 comments Now we get to Jamie telling Claire he has dreamed of her ...in HER own time ...seeing Claire in electric light. Fascinating.

Wonder if that somehow ties into Jamie's ghost eventually?

message 283: by Diane (new)

Diane | 1360 comments That is the great pondering and has been up to much debate over the years...

message 284: by MichaelCollins (new)

MichaelCollins | 819 comments Diane wrote: "That is the great pondering and has been up to much debate over the years..."

Well I remember reading about this somewhere but it was pretty clear and definite Jamie saying that he dreamed of Claire in light from her own time. There was no ambiguity about what he said.

message 285: by Diane (new)

Diane | 1360 comments Certainly but the pondering has been if it is related to the ghost. I am in the belief it is not the same incident from the first book and something different all together. There are several indications, through out the series, that Jamie dreams or even communicates with his loved ones in the future but does not travel himself.

I agree -- Jamie in that incident even says she was sitting at her desk in the electric light -- writing? Certainly different from him standing in the rain looking at her through a window brushing her hair.

It IS kinda spooky how Jamie, while not being able to time travel, seems to be able to "travel" with his dreams and how he can forsee things, but I guess since I am well advanced in ABOSAA I will come across more reveals like that. Kinda looking forward to it lol

In Echo and MOBY, this idea is explored a bit more and we get to explore the idea of the supernatural element of Outlander just a bit more. I want to explain it to you to the best of my ability, but I can't without spoiling some more major plot points.

Thanks -- I am about 65% + thru ABOSAA -- just past the point where Ian has expressed Shock and Awe at Bre's explanation that in her time a valuable resource like paper is ...ahem..used for hygenic purposes.

I did notice Jamie's recalling his dream to Claire seeing her in her time in ELECTRIC light which I found fascinating. Looking forward to more.

DOA takes place in a time period when the world was at war....there were in fact several going on at the same time. Diana does her homework and the historical accuracy is amazing.....when she does change or add to a historical fact she always lets us know in the afterword.

Mary Joseph-Alvarado | 195 comments Heather wrote: "He had sex with three...Claire, that chick that mothered William (and forced Jamie into it), and Laoghaire."

No actually there were four: Claire, Mary MacNab, Geneva Dunsey and Laoghaire. He had children with Claire (Faith who died at birth and Brianna) and Geneva (William) however if you read between the lines he has a lot of space inbetween dreams of having sex with Claire the whole time she is gone.

Laoghaire was also a girl grown into a women who held onto the belief that Jaime loved her and was forced into marrying Claire. She had not concept that Claire was Jaime's soul mate. It was not until she was married that she realized that Jaime would never love her but he would take care of her and the girls. His honor required this but his devotion and love would never belong to her. He loved her girls because they allowed him to be a father (substitution for Bree and William) and there were three people in Laoghaire's marital bed. She did not know what to do with a man like Jaime. Laoghaire's one strength was that she was a good and caring mother to Marseli and Joan.

Jaime also dreams of Bree, Roger and the children after the return to the 20th century and describes what he sees to Claire who had not told about any of the things he describes in detail. It is probable that Jaime and Jenny both have the sight (we call it ESP today).

message 293: by MichaelCollins (new)

MichaelCollins | 819 comments I'll look forward to coming upon that -- should be very interesting!

But I do agree its likely hereriditary and if Jenny had it -- so does Jamie
