Azure (azurelilliana) | 3 comments Hi David!
So, I noticed a long time ago, after originally reading Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist sometime in 2006 and promptly Googling it that there were characters the same name: Nick and Nora of the Thin Man and upon further research I found a movie about Dashiell Hammet (creator of The Thin Man) and Lillian Helmen titled Dash and Lilly.
Sadly though, I cannot find anything of this sort relating to Naomi and Ely's No Kiss List.
I was wondering if you/Rachel Cohn did this on purpose, and if there is in fact another link of a Naomi and Ely?
Thank you!!

David Levithan | 22 comments Hi Azure,

You've got a very good eye for connections. The Dash and Lily are, indeed, meant to reference Hammett and Hellman, as a tip of the hat to the creator of the original Nick and Nora.

As for Naomi and Ely ... the funny thing is that I never asked Rachel where she came up with those names, until we went on tour. Someone asked the question and Rachel answered that Ely was named after ... our friend Patty's cat. So no big literary history there, alas.
