A beautiful ending, reflecting upon a career spanning the very beginnings of computing to the modern era, and inspiration for us all. And, some thoughts of information overload in our field.

Although Brooks is about a generation and a half older than me, we have a little indirectly in common with the beginnings of computing history. My master's advisor at U of Illinois (Richard Brown, who died in 2009 at 85) worked with Howard Aiken at Harvard (as did Brooks). Aiken created one of the first computers, a relay-based machine called the Mark I, in 1944.

Our field is so very young.
