M (aka DarkBeauty73) (darkbeauty73) | 44 comments no offense taken, David. I think where show is on HBO and it is geared more towards adults. But I too admit that sometimes they go a little to far with things. I never found the books to be like this but I guess it is a little different seeing it then reading it.

message 2: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) True Blood is an adult Paranormal Romance show. The books have pretty near pornographic places in them. HBO does it because they are a private station, they can get away with it, and that's what the public wants. They also show drug use in case you missed the reefer smoking and pills being tossed around. :)

M (aka DarkBeauty73) (darkbeauty73) | 44 comments Yeah the books have pretty graphic nudity in places and I agree with what Cary said above it is a mature show.

M (aka DarkBeauty73) (darkbeauty73) | 44 comments sometimes they go into detail but it isn't like pages, the scenes go by quick. As for the books they are really good, once I pick up one I can't put it down till it is finished.

message 5: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jaymetheghostreader) I don't think the books have as much nudity as the show and it's HBO so they can get away with that, The books are different from from the show though and the books are worth reading.

message 6: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sandram1967) | 67 comments Sadly nudity is a big thing in some shows/movies. It can increase their ratings.

message 7: by Jayme (last edited Jan 12, 2011 07:48PM) (new)

Jayme (jaymetheghostreader) I wouldn't go so far as to say she is a whore. The first person she ever slept with was Bill. I think she only slept with two people and the books-Bill and Eric.
I only think she has slept with Bill on the show.

message 8: by Amy (new)

Amy (mommy_of_angels) | 15 comments She doesn't cheat on Bill. They break up. Bill is not as innocent as he seems. Plus she gets another boyfriend in the books & she sleeps with him too. The bald guy that can turn into a tiger that is a bouncer at the werewolf meetings. Quinn. She actually ends up being with Eric.

message 9: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jaymetheghostreader) Sookie and Quinn only did it once in the books that I recall. I didn't think it a romantic experience. Sookie and Bill were already broken up when she got together with Quinn and she and Quinn didn't last that long to begin with. So it isn't like she is cheating. If you are that outraged by the show David, then don't watch it anymore. However the show and the series are not exactly the same. I would suggest reading the first book and see how you feel about it before dismissing the series. I wouldn't solely base your opinion entirely on the show.

message 10: by Stacy (new)

Stacy (stacywells) | 45 comments David wrote: "She sleeps with eric in the books?
Then she is a whore because she cheated on bill.
And she slept with bill a lot of times on the show."

You have to remember the show and the book are two different things, they vary greatly from one another.

message 11: by Amy (new)

Amy (mommy_of_angels) | 15 comments I agree with Jayme & Stacy. The books are very different from the show. The show doesn't follow the books exactly.

message 12: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jaymetheghostreader) I enjoy both the book series and the tv series.

message 13: by Amy (new)

Amy (mommy_of_angels) | 15 comments I do too but I think I like the books more. The books are always better in my opinion. :)

message 14: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jaymetheghostreader) Well books are always better.

M (aka DarkBeauty73) (darkbeauty73) | 44 comments Well it is like this you have to read the books or watch the show to understand why she isn't with Bill and with other people. It isn't like she hops from one bed to another right away it is over a span of time.

message 16: by Amy (new)

Amy (mommy_of_angels) | 15 comments M is right, if you have not read the books then you have no idea what you are talking about! The Queen was using Bill to get info out of Sookie. Bill was working for the Queen. The show came after the books, so no, she's not suppose to be with Bill, that's not what it's all about. Really if you think she's such a whore then don't watch the show.

message 17: by Sara-Beth (new)

Sara-Beth You have to relize that the books and the show are made for adult entertainment, not teen. Part of being an adult is relizing that people have sex. They break up and they sleep with diffrent people. I dont understand why everyone makes a big deal with nudity. Its part of nature, embrace it.

message 18: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jaymetheghostreader) Umm I have a degree in English in fact. It does say he is using her in the show when Sookie went to Bill's house and found all the newspaper clippings about her family and he had inside information on her. I believe it was in the second season.

M (aka DarkBeauty73) (darkbeauty73) | 44 comments How many seasons have you watched? If you have seen all the episodes the last 3 seasons then you would know the answers.

message 20: by Amy (new)

Amy (mommy_of_angels) | 15 comments David, read the books. You are a very rude young man. You come in here & complain about things & try to argue about everything.

message 21: by M (aka DarkBeauty73) (last edited Jan 14, 2011 08:21AM) (new)

M (aka DarkBeauty73) (darkbeauty73) | 44 comments She didn't find out about Bills betrayal with the Queen till the end of season 3.

M (aka DarkBeauty73) (darkbeauty73) | 44 comments At the end of season 3 she broke up with him. Uninvited him and everything.

message 23: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jaymetheghostreader) How can you comment on a show when you haven't seen the entire 2 seasons? David, you are like a detective trying to solve a homicide without all the clues. If you don't like the show, fine. I agree with Amy, you come in here and all you been is argumentative and frankly immature. I don't see why I should tell you what happens especially if you are just going to critise everything.

message 24: by April (last edited Jan 15, 2011 09:28AM) (new)

April | 26 comments David has been rude, argumentative, and immature. I'm going to guess, based on his comments, the way they're written, and the books in his Goodreads "library", that he IS very young.

@David - These books are no Twilight. They are good, but in different ways than Twilight. Twilight is for young adults, whereas the Sookie Stackhouse series is for ADULTS. Perhaps, they are not for you at this time.

message 25: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jaymetheghostreader) I hate to burst your bubble David, as long as your profile is public, anyone can look at your book list.

message 26: by Starling (new)

Starling Edward, why bother "fixing" it so people can't see your book list? One of the things Goodreads is for is to be able to share book likes and dislikes.

message 27: by Nora (new)

Nora | 9 comments Books are ten times more trash!!
If they made a show based exactly on the show, there would be more nudity. Do I have to remind you all the scenes with Eric, even before they got together??

message 29: by Chela (new)

Chela (chelah) | 8 comments Let's face it sex sells. Not as to say that HBO doesn't care about the integrity of their show they just know what their viewers want. Do they push the envelope? Yes. Do they cross? Certainly at times. But at the end of the day the tv ratings are they're for a reason. But don't get me wrong I also have often questioned the taste level of the show.
And as for the series reflecting the books well that's like comparing apples and oranges.
The show is Allen Ball's perspective on the Sookie Stackhouse world. As where the series is all Charlaine Harris.

message 30: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jaymetheghostreader) Apples and oranges are still fruit. I think you mean apples and mountains. :)

message 31: by Chela (new)

Chela (chelah) | 8 comments Oranges are citrus fruit and apples are a pomaceous fruit . But , LOL touche. :-) Aside from the characters the two have very little in common.

message 32: by Nora (new)

Nora | 9 comments Hey everyone!
I looove the books, and I loove the show. They're different, but both fantastic, creative, exciting,...
I wanted to know if any one of you happened to read Guilty Pleasures. I just found that book. It's been written like 10 years ago. First, I didn't want to go through it, because, I use to think Charlaine Harris's books were the best. Still, now I realize there are more and more similarities between Sookie's novels and Guilty pleasures. and sometimes it is just disturbing. I must admit, that it makes you think again about Sookies's novels

message 33: by Chela (new)

Chela (chelah) | 8 comments Umm that sounds interesting Nora. But I've never heard of it. Who wrote Guilty Pleasures? Is it a series?

message 34: by Nora (new)

Nora | 9 comments The author is Laurell Hamilton
I'm not sure, but I think it is a series. I'm reading the first tome

M (aka DarkBeauty73) (darkbeauty73) | 44 comments There is something like 19 books in the Anita Blake series(Guilty Pleasure) by Laurell K Hamilton. I have read the first book some time ago and I have a lot of the others on ereader. I agree they are a good book. But as for similar to Sookie Stackhouse series, other then being written for adults the story is different. Maybe it is the graphic sex scenes and what not that you mean.

message 36: by Nora (new)

Nora | 9 comments I'm talking more about the general frame: the heroin who's got a special talent, who dates a vampire with an important position in the vampires's hierarchy, who's always in deep trouble, always gets beaten up, who's fearless, confident, etc...
Anyway, I won't be surprised if Harris happened to have taken some inspiration from Anita Blake

message 37: by Starling (new)

Starling I like both of the Laurell Hamilton series. I don't find them "like" the Sookie books at all, except that there are both vampires and werefolk of multiple kinds in both sets of books.

The universes that Anita and Sookie live in are very different, and so are their lives. There are a bunch of books in the Hamilton series. I think even more than in Sookie's series. The series changes a lot from the early books (mainly mystery with a lot of paranormal in it) to books that have a lot of sex in them. Some people like the early, mainly sexless, books. Some like the newer ones. I like both.

message 38: by Nora (new)

Nora | 9 comments Thanx for the info Starling

message 39: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jaymetheghostreader) I have heard of her and it is a series.

M (aka DarkBeauty73) (darkbeauty73) | 44 comments Nora I agree with your comparisons of the two series it has been quite some time since I read Guilty Pleasure. But of course both series are a great read.

Irene Well Worth A Read Um... Hi there people. I just this second joined your group but now not so sure I belong. Any grown ups in here? Anyone easily offended by sex or nudity would do better with the twilight books or vampire diaries or the many other series of books and shows geared towards children.

Sookie was not married to Bil, or cheating on him. There was really no reason for her to go without sex the rest of her life after they broke up.

message 42: by Amy (new)

Amy (mommy_of_angels) | 15 comments Yes, Irene. Some of us are grown ups & not all of us have a problem with the nudity. it was one young boy that started the discussion. Like you said, you just joined the group. Please go back & read all the comments to understand what was being said. There were plenty of us that had no problem with it. Thanks!

Irene Well Worth A Read Well in that case I think I'll hang around a while. Nice to meet you Amy.
I'm a huge fan of both the books and the show. I haven't seen the newest season yet because we don't have HBO anymore so I'm anxiously awaiting the dvd release. I've even gotten my husband addicted to it.

message 44: by Amy (new)

Amy (mommy_of_angels) | 15 comments I'm the same. My husband never watched True Blood before we met. Now he loves the show. I didn't like last season as much as the previous seasons & I do think the books are better. (But aren't they always!) There's no release date yet for season 3 on dvd. I've checked. :(

message 45: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jaymetheghostreader) Well it's HBO, you go into watching a HBO series with a grain of salt and learn to expect nudity. Thankfully there is a plot to the series or I wouldn't watch it at all. I learned to overlook over the top nudity. That is just me.

Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) | 182 comments I just read through the comments in this thread. I was literally lol.

I know, I have it in the saved section of my netflix but no date ever shows yet. I hate to hear season 3 wasn't as good. Are the werewolves in it yet?

message 48: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jaymetheghostreader) yes

message 49: by Amy (new)

Amy (mommy_of_angels) | 15 comments Yeah they're in it. For me it just wasn't as good as the first 2 seasons. I hope the 4th is better.

message 50: by Nora (new)

Nora | 9 comments Season 3 was very good in my point of view. We discover some great caracters: Franklin, Russel, Alcide. I mean, they're just amazing. Plus, the relationship between Sookie and Eric evoloves, and gets more...well, real, let's say.
