Duane Grasse (duaneg) | 1 comments I owned this book as a child, and I remember the illustrations--I loved them.
A boy goes off to fight a mean hungry giant, and packs a bag with a few items, including a small bird and a round of cheese. I won't spoil the ending for those who haven't read it, but it involves a flyswatter.
Anyone can help me remember the title?

MB (What she read) | 136 comments It wasn't Are All the Giants Dead? by Mary Norton was it? It has been too long since I read it, but I remember loving it! And the illustrations ARE amazing.

Sara | 2 comments Did you ever find out the name of this book. My grandmother read this book to me as a child. I'm desperately trying to find it. So far your the closest I've come to anything.

Mir | 714 comments Oh, gosh, I read this, too! I can remember the illustration of the boy (view spoiler). This is actually a folk tale, I think from Scandinavia. I had one version in a collection, maybe by the d'Aulaires and a stand alone picture book... I don't recall the author but will try to come up with it later.

Melanti | 333 comments Isn't this the same folktale that starts out with a tailor swatting flies? He brags about "killing 7 with one blow" and the townsfolk assume he is talking about giants?

If so: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Vali...

SurLaLune lists quite a few versions of it:

I read a version of this when I was a kid staring Mickey Mouse! (Probably not the version you're looking for, cause I don't remember the pictures being that great, but here it is: Brave Little Tailor )
