Well it's seems we have a winner. One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia was chosen as our winner.

Now we may choose honors.

We will do it in a similar fashion to the nomination poll for the ten books that we had.

Lets use our same list:

Countdown
Out of My Mind
The Dreamer
Mockingbird
The Red Umbrella
A Conspiracy of Kings
Woods Runner
Keeper
Forge
Touch Blue
Ninth Ward
The War to End All Wars: World War I
The Water Seeker

Make your votes here and vote on the poll to decide how many honors we should have.

Voting will end on Jan, 9th.

message 3: by Leigh (new)

Leigh (LeighB) The War to End All Wars should win an Honor.

message 4: by Pam (new)

Pam | 22 comments Countdown's format is hard to beat. I'm betting on it for an Honor.

David | 26 comments I think A Conspiracy of Kings is definitely distinguished with excellent plot, characterization and dialog, and deserves to win an Honor. I think we should have 4 honors.

Kathleen (KathleenA) | 34 comments One Crazy Summer just won the Scott O'Dell Award!!

message 10: by Leigh (new)

Leigh (LeighB) Kathleen wrote: "One Crazy Summer just won the Scott O'Dell Award!!"

Which I guess means it won't win the Newbery. I was sure it was going to win the Newbery.

What makes you say that? Are they really mutually exclusive?

message 12: by Jamie (new)

Jamie | 8 comments I vote:

The Red Umbrella

for an honor.

message 13: by Pete (new)

Pete | 1 comments I vote The Red Umbrella for an honor.

message 14: by Jayanne (new)

Jayanne | 1 comments From our list I would vote for Countdown. However, I just finished Moon Over Manifest by Clare Vanderpool and wish it would honor.

Holly | 30 comments My votes are for Countdown and Woods Runner. I think four Honor books would be nice.

The awards are administered by totally different groups (the O'Dell isn't an ALA award, while the Newbery is). So there's no reason OCS couldn't win both. For instance, Elijah of Buxton won the O'Dell for 2008 and was also a Newbery Honor (and I think Out of the Dust was the last book to win both, in 1998).

Dan | 1 comments My vote is for The Red Umbrella and Countdown. I also think four books would be nice.

message 18: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 10 comments I didn't vote on the original vote because I haven't finished reading all the books. I'm swamped with other reading and just haven't been able to keep up. However, of the books I have read I would have put Keeper way at the top with One Crazy Summer a close second. I'm in the middle of Countdown now. I've read The Dreamer 3 times so far and still have trouble with it. I'm going to read it with my kids' book club to see what they think. For me, Woods Runner, Out of My Mind, and Mockingbird were good books but not Newberys. Haven't yet read Red Umbrella or Conspiracy of Kings but I adore Megan Whalen Turner's series. Just my 2¢.

Margaret Kensinger-Klopfer | 31 comments I vote Ninth Ward for an honor. What a magical book. Something that felt really new.

Lana Krumwiede | 16 comments I'm chiming in at the last minute to get my Newbery predictions on the record. I do think One Crazy Summer will come in first. My votes for honors go to:

The Dreamer (I actually liked this better than One Crazy Summer)
Countdown
Leaving Gee's Bend (a dark horse guess)

Eagerly awaiting tomorrow's results . . .
