Ivan Over the years there have been many film adaptations of H. G. Wells. Has anyone ever seen the two films he wrote: "The Man Who Could Work Miracles" (1936: based on the story The Man Who Worked Miracles) and "Things to Come" (1936: based on his novel The Shape of Things to Come)?

I have the former on order from Amazon [I'll post back here when I've viewed it], but am looking for opinions from anyone who may have already seen it.

The Shape of Things to Come is an excellent film. I've seen it at least twice as TCM shows it once or twice a year. Raymond Massey, the wonderful character actor, does a splendid job in that movie.

I've not seen The Man Who Worked Miracles.

Ivan Thank you.

I just watched a film written by Wells called "The Man Who Could Work Miracles" - starring Roland Young, a young Ralph Richardson (made to look old) and George Sanders. Quite enjoyable - for 1936. It's about a mild mannered little shop clerk and what happens to him when the Gods allow him the power to make all he wishes for come true. A thought provoking comedy. Stephen Sondheim wrote that wishes come true, not free. This is the lesson Young learns throughout the film.

I'm also watching a mini-series called "The Infinite Worlds of H. G. Wells" on DVD - comprised of several of his short stories. Feels a little like "Doctor Who."

A friend brought me a DVD of "The Invisible Man" with Claude Rains, which I'll watch this weekend.

Claude Rains is terrific as The Invisible Man. You'll enjoy it.

Ivan The Invisble Man didn't disappoint. The extras on the DVD were great as well - lots of info about director James Whale.

Ivan Finished watching "The Infinite Worlds of H. G. Wells" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Infi... and only wish that there had been extras. I find I enjoy watching the extras on DVDs almost as much as the films (maybe more in some cases). Anyway, this one is well worth watching if you can find it on Newflix or Amazon or at your local video haunt.

In used to have a copy of this on audio tape and need to replace it on CD. Jeff, I'm a big fan of Orson Welles - The Third Man, Kane, Touch of Evil, Ambersons, Othello, Compulsion, Jane Eyre, Lady from....all gems.

Ivan What I'd like to see is a film of "War of the Worlds" that was treated as respectfully as the adaptations of E. M. Forster and Henry James. Treat it as a period piece with all the attention to detail and then add the special effects.

Steve Joyce (stevejoyce) | 1 comments I consider the 1936 Things to Come as one of the top science fiction films ever made. Flawed perhaps but in a gripping earnest fashion. The Man Who Could Work Miracles is good light-hearted fun (with a bit of a message).

But...

Please everyone...be careful and do yourself a favor. Avoid the 70s film called The Shape of Things to Come. It's a loose (and poor) adaptation of Wells which, in a nutshell, is a terrible mish mash.
