Candiss (tantara) | 1207 comments Welcome to 2011! For our first Day 5 story of the year, we will be kicking things off with an unusual, highly thought-provoking piece by Yoon Ha Lee.

"Flower, Mercy, Needle, Chain" was originally published in the September 2010 issue of Lightspeed magazine and has been chosen for inclusion in The Year's Best Science Fiction & Fantasy, 2011 Edition. Furthermore, it was listed as among the best short fiction of 2010, as selected by Lois Tilton, short fiction reviewer for Locus.

The story is available online for free in both print and audio formats. The audio can be accessed via the blue "Listen" button at the top of the print story and is available to stream or download.

Print and audio formats: Lightspeed Magazine - September 2010

Discussion "officially" opens January 5, 2011 (and never really closes.)

Just a quick note to mention that, if you enjoyed the story, there's another free story by this author in this month's edition of Clarkesworld:

Felicity (faerye) I loved this story. The logical conceit of it was clever, and the final implications for the Loner Hero were epic (Ultimate Loner Hero!) but the atmosphere was also evocative and unique, and the writing beautiful. I liked the emphasis on symbol and name (shockingly -- who'd've guessed an English major would like that?)
