June Ahern (juneahern) | 67 comments I have authors that I like and look for anything new from them, but also am open to to new ones. Not into any "self-help" because with all I've read if I haven't help myself yet then, oh well. A good fictional novel to hold and enjoy is my aim. The Skye in June

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3625 comments I plan NOT to buy any more books till I have read my first 50 on my shelves!

Em (emmap) | 2929 comments The thing with resolutions is if you say right then "no chocolate" all you can think about is chocolate and if you say "no new books" you are inextricably drawn to Waterstones. I reckon the key is to aim low.... say I will only get second hand books or I will only buy one new book per week.

I want to make a dent in the books I own that I haven't yet read - I'm not saying precisely how many though...

message 5: by Chris (new)

Chris Stanley (christinelstanley) | 389 comments I am relatively new to this site, having transfered from Bookarmy which is closing down this month. Goodreads appears very organised and efficient, but I find myself joining so many reading groups covering the various genres I enjoy, that I would have to give up work and stop feeding my children to make enough time to read them all! I think I have fiction addiction!

Not only do I own hundreds of books(my TBR is sooooooooo excessive), my husband has bought me a kindle for xmas (lots of free favourite classics) and I download >2 audible books to my ipod every month.

My biggest challenge for 2011 is to enjoy the choice that I have available to me and be more selective about group reads. I plan to read only what really appeals to me, if I skip a month, it's not the end of the world!

message 6: by Em (new)

Em (emmap) | 2929 comments Hmmmm, I've heard social services disapprove when you stop feeding the children!

I like your sentiments Chris, being more selective is a good one - quality over quanitity!

Now I like that - quality over quantity! I shall aim for that one! Lots of epics and maybe a good series to get my teeth into!

I have the same problem with Readitswapit!

message 9: by Tracey (new)

Tracey Plan? hahaha i don't do planning.. i have a list of kindle books ready to read and since joining this website i seem to have a lot more on my wish list to!!
To be honest as long as i'm reading i'm happy and once i get my snout into a good book and the author captures me, i tend to buy all their books too.

Oh me too! Now I've discovered RISI, I cannot bring myself to simply give a book away! I have two very bookish daughters too. A bigger house is what I need!

message 13: by Stephen (last edited Dec 19, 2010 01:46PM) (new)

Stephen | 405 comments what I did in summer 2010 was to buy book collectorz so i knew exactly how many and what books I actually had and if stuck what to read next I click on the random and whatever comes up on my list is my next read :)a good investment even though got 610 books lol so not short of a book/read

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3625 comments Think I could do with one of those as I have 950 books unread on my library bookcases! I never know which one to choose!

message 15: by Stephen (new)

Stephen | 405 comments it cost me around £45 to get it

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3625 comments Maybe I should just shut my eyes and drag my fingers over the spines!

message 17: by Sam (new)

Sam (ecowitch) | 596 comments My book plans are simple; read, read, read read read read read and read some more and then a bit more and read read read read read hehe. That's about as far as my plans have got so far!

message 18: by Stephen (new)

Stephen | 405 comments and updates are free :)

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3625 comments Good plan! Looking out the window I think that is all I shall do today!

message 21: by Alice (new)

Alice | 7 comments Hopefully just carry on reading... but a lot quicker.

I would like to write up a list of books I should read and how many, and first on the list will be Nineteen Eighty Four, and maybe some other George Orwell books later.

message 22: by Stephen (new)

Stephen | 405 comments down and out in london and paris is a good one on a similar note the autobiography of a supertramp

I have had 1984 on my bookcase for around 30 yrs so that is on my list for next year too!

message 24: by R&D (new)

R&D (rowanallen) That's interesting, I've never had a plan or a challenge before. There is one book set to be released in 2011 that immediately crops up in my mind without hesitation: the translation of Murakami's IQ48 finally! I definitely plan to read that.

Alice | 7 comments Lynne wrote: "I have had 1984 on my bookcase for around 30 yrs so that is on my list for next year too! "

It sounds like, and must be a marvellous book, although I came to hearing about it by David Bowie's album 'Diamond Dogs' recently, and that is one of the main motivations, along with the fabulous plot, to read the book... which is a bit odd, I have to admit, ahah. :)

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3625 comments Alice, we could do a buddy read if you like, be good to have company while reading it.

message 27: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Light (kel_light) | 8 comments My plan for next year is to simply get down my TBR stash on my bookcase. To do this I have signed up for some challenges through some book blogs.

message 28: by Alice (new)

Alice | 7 comments Lynne;
That would be brilliant! Just let me know what day you'll start it and I'll try to keep up! ;)

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3625 comments Start antime you like after the new year, promise to read it slow!

message 30: by Bridgette (new)

Bridgette | 7 comments I do not tend to have a plan. I like buying books secondhand and then once i have read them i will give them to charity for other people to enjoy.

message 31: by Alice (new)

Alice | 7 comments Lynne;
Fabulous! Eee, I can't wait! :)

message 32: by Stephen (new)

Stephen | 405 comments when i get my books and have read them i swap them with others in UK

message 33: by Stephen (new)

Stephen | 405 comments use www.readitswapit.co.uk

similar to the goodreads swap but this one is UK based

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3625 comments I love readitswap it and have found some great books on there.

message 35: by Karen (new)

Karen | 54 comments Booky plans:

...same as last year, try my best to hit 52 books/year mark and read more classics.

Wish my brain had a "dual core processor" so I could do parallel processing of more than one book at a time!

message 36: by Niamh (new)

Niamh (niamhc) | 3 comments book plans this year is to read as many classics as new books and hopefully get most of the books i have always meant to get around to.

message 37: by Em (new)

Em (emmap) | 2929 comments Sounds like a good plan Niamh!

crafty_reading_shaza Booky plans for 2011.............read at least 6 books. Doesn't sound alot I know but when I haven't read 1 for years, 6 will be quite an achievement!

Work through my paperbacks, before buying a Kindle!

Review the books I do read on GoodReads!

message 39: by Em (new)

Em (emmap) | 2929 comments Hopefully having a goal will help you get back in the reading habit Sharon! I think you said that you read alot pre-baby and then got out of the groove - is that right? I managed to keep reading when I had my kids but ALOT less for a while as being Mum just filled every thought but I'm back on track now mine are older!

message 40: by Geoff (new)

Geoff (wwwgoodreadscomchiltsy) | 41 comments I've set myself a target to read 30 books this year but it's not the number of books I read that's the problem. I'm trying to read new stuff - authors that I've never read before or genres that I tend to avoid. Just setting myself a personal goal to make my reading a bit broader rather than just sticking to the 'old faithfuls' like I always do!

message 41: by Helen (new)

Helen | 4238 comments My goal is to read more than last year (since being a teacher I tend to go to bed too tired to read) adn to make a dent in the TBR. I have to say I almost feel saintly as my pile only exceeds 300 unlike some people!! LOL.

message 42: by Geoff (last edited Feb 27, 2011 06:31AM) (new)

Geoff (wwwgoodreadscomchiltsy) | 41 comments I'm a teacher as well (English and drama specialisms). I know the difficulty of finding time to read for yourself but I've got better at putting my work away in the evening and doing a bit of reading for me! I've tried to limit the number of books on my TBR shelf to one or two but it's not good - the pile just keeps getting bigger.

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3625 comments Helen and Geoff, I wish I only had a few books on my tbr list! I get more books than I can read! My library bookcases are full to over flowing now.

message 45: by stan (new)

stan (stanthewiseman) | 28 comments Hi
AS I am now retired ,my reading pattern is getting back to what it was a great many years ago around 2 a week obviously how long the book is. I have a number of library books to finish. And then....AND THEN I have the pleasure of reading The Stig Larson trilogy back to back
Super deal in Costco

message 46: by Karen (new)

Karen | 54 comments Yay! At present I am ahead of my goal (a book a week) by a significant margin!

message 47: by Helen (new)

Helen | 4238 comments Well done karen, I'm on 20 which means I've matched last year, I'd love to read 100 but 50 is probably more realistic.

message 48: by Marilyn (new)

Marilyn Rice (marilynlrice) | 13 comments Congrats helen!

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3625 comments Well done Karen, I am ahead too by a short one! I have tried really hard not to re-read my favourites and I have done really well with 61 new books read so far this year and only 6 re-reads I have listened to.

message 50: by Ian, Moderator (new)

Ian (pepecan) | 5528 comments Mod
