There are several editions of A Portrait of the Artist, and the Viking Critical Library edition is quite nice. It comes with the definitive text, some critical responses and a decent set of notes. The Annotated Joyce is also a good edition to have, as it offers lots of detailed notes on the text (Dublin in particular), for those of you that don't speak Irish, and don't know the layout of Dublin. There are a lot of local references in Joyce's writing that refer to places in Dublin, and these texts can help to clarify little points that can be easily misunderstood.
