Judges of the annual literary award said they were especially impressed by a passage comparing lovemaking to "a lepidopterist mounting a tough-skinned insect."

Whoo-hoo! That's an image I want in my mind...

Is it possible to get turned on by a book? Examples? Explain.

Phil | 11694 comments (Teenage Boy) + (Penthouse Letters) = TOTALLY turned on (the teenage boy, NOT ME).

Sheesh, you people.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I think today's generation doesn't have to work hard enough for their porn. They get it from a computer, for God's sake! Way too easy. They need to earn it.

I'm told that's how boys of my generation got it."

From his stash, I have to assume my dad was a real horndog.

message 5: by Lori (new)

Lori Hahaha, yes my brother and I discovered my dad's stash of Penthouse at an early age. I remember a running cartoon about this young women who would constantly get in dangerous situations but she was also always naked - she never had time to get dressed between her ahem rough spots I guess.

Richard gets Playboy for the articles! Yes! Anyway, I've found stashes of them under Jake's bed, with balls of plastic wrappers. Richard hasn't noticed he hasn't been receiving his Playboys, but I'm sure Jake is very grateful.

There can absolutely be great sex in books, I've gotten wet from some! TMI? Oh well. But not the porn stuff, well written sex that is a culmination of the emotions of the characters.

Brittomart Have I told the "Black cookies" story here?

message 7: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) No.

message 8: by Brittomart (last edited Nov 30, 2010 09:17AM) (new)

Brittomart One day - I think I was 8 'cause my younger cousin was like 4, I think. the cable was out, and we were watching like Toy Story or something on VHS on my parents little 19 inch tv in their bedroom. The video runs out, we're looking for something else to watch. I see this tape that's sitting right beside the tv, and it's called "Black Cookies." Well...I put in the tape, and let's just say those were some very interesting cookies.

message 9: by Lori (new)

Lori Hahaha yeah yech:

He unbuttoned the front of her shirt and pulled it to the side so that her breast was uncovered, her nipple poking out, upturned like the nose of the loveliest nocturnal animal, sniffing the night. He took it between his lips and sucked the salt from her.

Somerville also describes pubes "like desert vegetation following an underground stream" and a lady's sex move as "a fish flipping itself."

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments I think Laurell Hamilton writes the best sex scenes.

message 11: by Brittomart (new)

Brittomart I once wrote a sex story without any sex.

Please don't call me Shirley.

message 15: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca White (rebecca_white) | 1028 comments Yes, but it's so individualistic, I think the only sex that has a chance to turn on somebody else has to first turn on the author. I think that has to show through.

My favorite sex scene is in a horror novel called "House of Leaves" by Mark Danielewski. And why is it so great? Part of it was the surprise, not seeing it coming (so to speak), but mainly it was ejaculation, my friends, ejaculation. And nothing softened by either metaphor or simile, and nothing exaggerated. It was just realistic fooling around with ejaculation.

Brittomart Why doesn't TC talk about sex more?

message 21: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) I'm listening to Stephen King's "Bag of Bones" and the sex scenes are titillating to say the least. I read the book years ago. I had completely forgotten the graphic sex scenes. Same thing with IT. What happened to my memory? Oh well, I get to enjoy it all over again. "With a wiggle and a wobble as you go in deeper."

When my son was about 3, someone gave my husband a Penthouse magazine for his birthday. It had fallen onto the floor and was open to the centerfold. My son happened along, saw it, and exclaimed, "Oh! Titties! Shirt pulled up." Then we heard an audible gasp and he looked further down, "MUSTACHE!" For months afterwards, he'd ask of any woman he saw, "Mommie, does she have a mustache?"

That reminds me of my cousin and I reading "Lady Chatterly's Lover" under the covers with a flashlight. We were about 13 at the time.

Rebecca White (rebecca_white) | 1028 comments Oh, Samurai thread, okay.

I write dirty email to my sweetheart while he's on TV in the morning. I don't know how good it is, but he seems to like it.

message 24: by Brittomart (last edited Nov 30, 2010 12:28PM) (new)

Brittomart I like writing dirty emails and sexts. They're fun! I can get really imaginative 'cause all I have is my imagination.

I thought that The Pillars of the Earth had the most ridiculous sex scenes, if we're going that route. I've never heard of anyone spending so much energy describing pubis before.

message 27: by Michele (new)

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments It's funny. My parents carefully watched what I saw at the movies or on tv but I cannot recall either of them checking to see what I was reading. In fact,my dad gave me a box of his books when I was 12 and it was all "grown up" reading. I found Leslie Charteris that way. First time I saw the word "breast" in print.

message 28: by Lori (new)

Lori heh, I snuck my Dad's copy of Rosemary's Baby and The Godfather when I was about 12. Oh also a book by Taylor Caldwell that had a terrific sex scene in it, I read it over and over again.

message 29: by Michele (new)

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments I didn't learn about sex until I was 15 or 16 and even then it was all theoretical in print. reading and doing are 2 different things. which is why i gave my 16 yr.old "The Joy of Sex" for his 16th birthday. Trying to ignore that teenage boys don't have sex is burying your head in the sand.

I don't think I've been turned on by a literary sex scene since age 12.

I take it you weren’t impressed by the Marie Callender's Fall Fisting Festival?
