Lisarenee | 7659 comments I just got this one from the library also and will post my thoughts when I'm done. I should have posted this one sooner.

Lisarenee | 7659 comments So this book deals with the Psy and Changelings. Psys are Psychics with the ability to communicate with each other via their minds. If a Psy is split from the PsyNet they will die. Each Psy also possesses abilities which vary from person to person. Some can manipulate people's will while others can read minds. They are lead by the Council and years ago a program was set in place in an attempt to curb the amount of insanity that was created within the populace. This program was called the Silence. Basically the Psy were stripped of their emotions. Changelings, on the other hand, are individuals that can change form into an animal.

In this book a serial killer is on the loose killing Changelings. The person responsible is a Psy (this fact comes from the scent left on the victims). Lucas Hunter, a Changeling and Pack leader, attempts to hunt down the killer before the next victim is killed. To do so he negotiates a business deal in an attempt to get close to a Psy, preferably one with connections to the Council, and gain information as to who is doing the killing. The problem is that the Psy are known as cold and uncaring. Convincing one to help will be next to impossible.

Sans I thought I remembered a thread for Nalini Singh's books!

I finished this book last week but I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. The characterizations were wonderful, both the main protagonists and the secondary characters.

I've noticed that a lot of "first in series" books can be a bit dry with some false starts, especially if the author is using that first book as a vehicle to set up the secondary characters as 'soon to be heroes' (as I call them). Singh managed to not only keep me fully engaged with Sascha and Lucas, but to tease me with glimpses of her future heroes. Even better, she gave us a great collection of future heroes. They're not all the same and they're not all dudes either.

Further to that thought, how awesome that at least one Sentinel was a chick and a few soldiers are chicks too? Most PNR series I've read keep the guys on the front line of whatever battles or war they're fighting and the womenfolk are kept safe and sound at home. Not in the Psy-Changling world. If you can and want to fight, it's all based on talent, not what equipment is in your pants.

I also loved the slightly futuristic setting. About 60 years from now in my home area. Awesome! I had more to say but can't remember what it was now (got pulled into an update meeting with my boss in the middle of this post).

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Oh, I didn't know this had a "futuristic" setting, Sans. Great! I can use it for a challenge.

message 6: by Sans (new)

Sans Awesome, when would you like to start? Nightfall is futuristic too (technically dystopian).

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments We best stagger it with that one somewhat, don't you think? There is some discussion of this starting in December or February in one of our groups. There are just NOT enough hours in the day to read, Sans!

message 8: by Sans (new)

Sans Staggering would be good. Since both will fit the futuristic requirement, I'll leave it to you to decide which you'd like to read first.

NO. JOKE. I need me a time turner. Where's Dumbledore when you need him?

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments I was looking at someone's challenge yesterday and they are going to re-read the whole Harry Potter series and I just wanted to join them!!!

message 10: by Sans (new)

Sans I could dig that. I never finished the series actually. Got them all, both in paperback and audiobook (the GOOD audiobooks, with Stephen Fry reading, not that Jim Dale twit).

message 11: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments LOL! Good, you can lend them to me. I've always wanted to listen to the audiobooks; I've hear SF does a FABULOUS job.

message 12: by Sans (new)

Sans He DOES. I'll send them out to you soon!

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments You are so sweet to me, Sans!! However, not right now; I'll keep you posted. And don't send them all at once.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I read this about a month ago and now this series is my new obsession. I'm up to book 4 now. I would have read more but I've had books to read for paperbackswap and challenges here.

Lisarenee | 7659 comments I love the series too. I need to get back to it. I think I made it to the third. I own I think every book in the series or close to it.
