Let's vote for fall. As mentioned, I'm taking a little break, but I'm looking forward to being back in September. Here are the choices by Random Number Generator. Let's vote through August 15 so late comers get a chance. Then I'll post the winners in the Events sections.

September
All Soul’s Day ~ Cees Nooteboom
The Regonitions – William Gaddis
Book of Illusions – Paul Auster
Cryptonomicon – Neal Stephensen

October
Go Tell it on the Mountain – James Baldwin
A Clockwork Orange – Anthony Burgess
Cloudsplitter – Russell Banks
The Plumed Serpent – D.H. Lawrence

November
La Brava – Elmore Leonard
The Satanic Verses – Salman Rushdie
Persuasion – Jane Austen
The Mysteries of Udolpho – Ann Radcliffe

September: All Soul's Day by Cees Nooteboom
October: A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess
November: The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie

message 4: by Derrick (new)

Derrick (afderrick) | 92 comments can I unvote? I'm going to be deployed and while I plan on reading (mostly my big 1000+ page books) I don't know if I will have more free time to come and discuss books so I want to unvote for books, can I?

I would like to read Clockwork Orange and the Satanic verses. I would hate to miss the discussions on these though which I probably will. September books I would've participated but could careless about any of the books. So if I'm allowed to unvote those are the two I unvote for.

Denise | 235 comments Derrick, I'm glad you got your honeymoon in before deployment. I know you'll be busy and any internet time you have will likely be devoted to family, but if you get a chance drop us a quick note here and there.

my votes:

Sept: All Souls Day
Oct: Go Tell it On the Mountain
Nov: La Brava

Note: 2 of the titles for sept. have a protagonist who recently lost his wife and children in a plane crash. odd coincidence.

message 13: by Derrick (new)

Derrick (afderrick) | 92 comments Denise, thanks. The only bad part about the deployment is we are going to miss our first thanksgiving and christmas together. Her family lives in town though so she won't be alone on those days. If I get a chance I will drop a note, but I have been told I'll be working 12 hour days, so not sure how much "free" time I will have.

message 21: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (fireweaver) | 104 comments book of ilusions
the plumed serpent
the satanic verses

i read 'cryptonomicon' a few months ago, and it's a completely fantastic book, but it's mighty weighty, so i won't be re-reading for a few years at least.

i keep almost picking up 'satanic verses' on general principle at the library anyway, so i'm keen on that one.

message 22: by Kieffala (new)

Kieffala | 76 comments Forgive me if "we" have already read these books, but here are my choices:

September: The Devil and Miss Prym: A Novel of Temptation, Paul Coelho

October: The Godfather, Mario Puzo

November: Wittgenstein's Nephew: A Friendship (Phoenix Fiction Series)
by Thomas Bernhard

How do we vote? Or is it just which books get the most suggestions?

message 23: by Kieffala (new)

Kieffala | 76 comments Alright, having done what I should have done initially, and going to the beginning of this thread, I discover my error and vote for the following:

message 30: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Sept- The Recognitions

Oct- A Clockwork Orange

Nov- The Satanic Verses

***I wanted to point out that what Erika said about the two versions of A Clockwork Orange is correct. However, if you have an American edition published after 1986, it should contain the final chapter. The book, in its entirety, is comprised of 3 sections, each section has 7 chapters, 21 chapters total.

message 31: by Tabrez (new)

Tabrez | 6 comments September: Cryptonomicon – Neal Stephensen

Smarti | 46 comments September: the book of Illusions
October: a clockwork orange
November: The Satanic verses (even though I have already read it, I would like to discuss some more)

Sorry for not taking part in the recent discussion but
A) I'm doing an internship and
B) I didn't care for any of the authors/books chosen

The fall selection, though, caters much more to my taste :-)

Clockwork Orange

message 41: by Linda (new)

Linda I made a boo-boo in my voting choices; don't have a preference for any of those suggested for Sept. but am sticking with Go Tell It and Persuasion. Already read Udolpho and it's a long one!

It is excited how much this group has grown. There aren't many experiences I like more than talking about good books, so thanks for all who've stopped in :-)

I will announce the winners tomorrow. It's probably Book of Illusions, Clockwork Orange and Satanic Verses, but there's still time, especially for those of you who want All Soul's Day or Plumed Serpent and haven't cast your vote
