Welcome Sarah!
This is a great group for both writers and readers. Although, writing keeps me busy, and I don't respond to many posts, I try to catch up on them regularly. Sorry, I didn't mention it, but thanks to this group, I've downloaded the FREE Keeper to my kindle and look forward to reading it. (Hopefully chatting about it soon with all of you.)

Cindy Woodsmall | 8 comments Hi, everyone! Author Cindy Woodsmall here!

I joined Goodreads a little bit ago, but am only now beginning to learn how to use it. I am SO excited to join this group and chat with you guys about Amish fiction!!

I just wanted to pop in here quickly and introduce myself, but if you would like to see a list of my books or read more about me, please visit my website!
www.cindywoodsmall.com

Unfortunately, my website is in a bit of a transition period, so please excuse it! We had some technical difficulties that made us have to reset my whole page, and we have not yet recovered. I am hoping it will look a bit nicer soon. :-)

Okay, I've rambled enough. ;-) I'm looking forward to talking to everyone again soon!

Welcome Cindy!! It's so good to have another author on board. How many authors do we have now?

message 266: by Susan (new)

Susan | 1 comments A new member here. My name is Susan, and I live near Salt Lake City, Utah. I have ancestors who were Pennsylvania Dutch, and got started on reading Amish fiction as my ancestors lived in or near Amish communities in Pennsylvania -- and some of them are rumored to have been Amish.

I enjoy this genre and am excited to find new authors that I may not have known about.

Hi Susan! Welcome to our little family. 8-)

Barbara (bkbsmiles) | 2 comments Hi! I lived in Lancaster County, PA for a couple of months and was in the home of an Amish family who seemed interested in me and my missionary companion. We weren't there to share a message, but just to meet them and it was a good visit. I enjoyed seeing the quilt that she would work on and then send to the next person. I also loved the caning done by the husband and his massive loom both of which were in a shed. I had fun visiting quilt shops to off the beaten path. In public places, I think the Amish avoided the English. I learned a lot more about their beliefs reading the book my mom gave me by Beverly Lewis than I did living there.

Welcome to our little group Ellen!

For our newer members... we have a list going under "Off Topic" called "Blanket the Globe" where we're seeing how many states in the U.S. and countries around the globe have members of our group. Will you add your state or country to the blanket?

message 287: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 7 comments Hi, I'm Heidi. I used to hang out a lot in the Love Inspired area of Goodreads, and I still really enjoy many of those books, especially the Buttons and Bobbins series by Jillian Hart, and the Amish Fiction they have (Love Inspired, non-historical) by Emma Miller (Her Amish series is my favorite of the Love Inspired Amish books), Patricia Davids, and I have yet to read Anna Schmidt's Amish books, but I have enjoyed her work in the Love Inspired Historicals genre. I know Marta Perry does many Amish Suspense novels, but that isn't really where my heart is as genres go, although I hear they are quite good! The Love Inspired, and Love Inspired Historical books are quite reasonable too, about five or six dollars, maybe less on Kindle (I was reading them before I got my Kindle :) They are definitely worth a read!

My favorite Amish Fiction authors are Beverly Lewis, Wanda E. Brunstetter, Emma Miller, Sarah Price, Suzanne Woods Fisher, Cindy Woodsmall. Lol, I am sure I am leaving some out, and I am always finding new Amish Fiction authors I like as well!

I find that what I like most about Amish fiction is the Amish people’s connection to their community, to nature, and most of all to God. I don't think they are perfect people, and I don't believe in all of their doctrines. I do however find their joy in the simple things of life, love of family and community, and their ideals admirable, and something to aspire to. I like how most of the books make me imagine a peaceful community, the likes of which I don't see in the "English" world, so for me it is wonderful escapism. I know I could never be Amish, but imagining myself as one of the characters is great fun, and allows me to really involve myself in that way of life, and the story.

Sometimes I tire of the Amish genre after so many books, but I always seem to come back to it, lol. The genre is just addictive! :) It is nice to see so many others that enjoy this genre, and to see what they are reading. I am sure I will get many great ideas about a TBR pile! I already have The Fiddler on my Kindle as my next read, as well as Jacob's Daughter (it was inexpensive, and seemed worth a try. I have been dying for The Fiddler to come out, and got an Amazon gift card for Mother's Day, so I got it right away!

Take care all, and happy reading!

message 294: by Margaret (new)

Margaret (margarette) Hello everyone. I joined Goodreads a few years ago but really didn't do anything here until the last month or so when I started seriously shelving my books. That's when I discovered this group and really wanted to get in on the book discussions.

As a Kentuckian, I was especially excited to see Missing: Secrets of Crittenden County chosen as a discussion book for this month. I hadn't heard of it before, but I own it now and look forward to reading it. I also downloaded the other Missing to my Kindle and it looks really good too. Love a good mystery!

I do have a couple of library loans that are about to expire, so I need to read those first, but I expect to be ready to join in discussions of Missing and Missing within a week. I'm really looking forward to it.

Hello again everyone. I missed the group so I've decided to come back. I was in touch with Diane and for right now, I'll probably be only be participating in the Christian group read, not the Amish ones as I don't seem to be enjoying those. I may try Amish fiction again at some point. Hope that's OK with everybody.

Thanks!

message 299: by Julie (new)

Julie Kramer Hi, I recently joined Goodreads and realized I should have posted this here instead of under book discussions...oh well...live and live...
Hello, my name is Julie Kramer and I am an author with an Amish mystery coming out August 7 from Atria/Simon and Schuster. It just got a starred review from Library Journal. SHUNNING SARAH centers on a clash of cultures: flashy TV news vs. a reclusive Amish community. Here's what Library Journal had to say:
TV reporter Riley Spartz travels 100 miles to cover the story of a young boy rescued from a sinkhole on a Minnesota farm, but her heartwarming story is quickly superseded by news of an unidentified corpse found during the rescue. After the body is linked to the Amish community, Riley investigates, but her quest to find the killer is almost derailed as she combats downsizing and harassment from an unscrupulous news director, police corruption, and strong resistance from the very private Amish.
Verdict: Kramer, a former journalist and TV news producer, has outdone herself. Her fifth thriller has the perfect mix of suspense, excitement, romance, and surprises to keep the discriminating crime fiction reader captivated.—Mary Todd Chesnut, Northern Kentucky Univ. Lib., Highland Heights
