This thread discusses free e-books available.

Please add any links to free e-books that you know are available. Our focus is history and non-fiction so please identify the nature of the link. That helps our group members know what to look for on that site and what specific genres are available.

No self promotion of any kind.

First, let us start with goodreads. Did you know that goodreads has over 3100 e-books that you can read right on your computer or download. You can easily increase the print size too.

Here is the link.

message 9: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) I downloaded a couple titles that I found browsing the link you put up, Bentley. I always thought I would be a confirmed reader of the physical book, but am finding with my iPad it is handy to have a few things in ebook form to read when travelling. Now I just seem to be expanding my library and my to-read list. Thank you (I think) :-D

The Mises Institute has a large library of economics, history, and other social science books in .epub, .pdf, and other formats. They have my favorite history book, Conceived in Liberty by Murray Rothbard, in a great .epub edition.

Thank you very much Douglas for the post.

I did delete a couple of previous posts which when I checked were no longer free even if you were in the UK.

Folks, please feel free to post free ebook offers that are not self promoting. Our membership certainly wants to take advantage of these. Make sure to add proper citations as Douglass did in message 18.

Julie Hendrix | 3 comments Cory Doctorow is one of my favorite authors, and he has made all of his books available free online in multiple formats. Although this book mentioned here is classified as science fiction, it features as a major theme the U.S. Bill of Rights and has won multiple awards. I highly recommend this book for young adults and adults.

All, if you know of free ebooks that are not self promotional - please of course add the links and let us know - our members would like to take advantage. By all means post here. See above for ideas.

However, if publishers want to offer us free publications to read - we do have policies in place but do not post these offers here. We will be happy to discuss. Simply send Bentley a PM.

National Academies Press has over 10,000 published books available for free download online. Most of the titles relate to science and technology, but there are some titles in the social sciences, economics, etc. These are mostly titles you might use for research. A lot of it is National Research Council titles and reports consolidated from conferences, but there are a few gems in there like this one:

Biodiversity by Edward O. Wilson by Edward O. Wilson Edward O. Wilson

It is worth checking out if you do a lot of research or have interests in the sciences (e.g. engineering) or histories of sciences (e.g. history of space exploration).
