Jason (jasonct) | 53 comments Latest publishing figures available from the Association of American Publishers, show 2 areas where sales grew in July (the latest data available)

Note ebooks and digital downloadable audiobooks were the two with the greatest sales growth.

"In what was a generally dismal month for the print trade categories, e-book sales rose 150.2%, to $40.8 million, in July at the 14 publishers that supply results to the Association of American Publishers' monthly sales report. Sales were down in all the major print trade segments, with the trade paperback and children's hardcover categories hurt by heavy returns. Along with e-books, another digital category, downloadable audio, did well in the month, with sales up 38.4%, to $6.6 million, at seven reporting companies, while sales of traditional audio fell 35.6%, to $8.7 million at 21 publishers. Through the first seven months of 2010, e-book sales rose 191.0% to $219.5 million, and continued to close the gap on mass market paperback, where year-to-date sales were off 13.1%, to $385.9 million, as the third largest format for adult titles.

Full sales report can be found here: http://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by...

Yes, Kindles and iPads are everywhere now. Downloadable books are cookin.

I do still love the feel of a book and have an impressive hard cover collection but boy are these other devices easier to travel with even on short trips.

Jason (jasonct) | 53 comments This is just a nice story.

Independent audiobook publish Blackstone Audio, held a 1 day fundraiser for their local fire dept. and raised $18,000.00 to help them purchase new equipment.

News story here: http://www.ktvl.com/video/?videoId=63...

Nice to see businesses giving back to their communities!

Yeah, that and a Custler title that were up for grabs seem to have disappeared from the Free list. Maybe there's a limit or cap as to number of unique dnloaders? I'm not sure when it stopped being free :-(

A lot of their catolog include audio rendering of the book. I am yet to listen to one so I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has, what is the audio and production values like.

Michael Flanagan (loboz) SUre can Bentley here is a good write up on the app

Audible releases iPhone app
by David Dahlquist, Macworld.com

If you’re a fan of audiobooks, you’re probably familiar with Audible, a major online provider of audiobook download that was picked up by Amazon in 2008. Although you’ve been able to play Audible content on iPods and iPhones for some time, the company is making its first foray into the App Store with a free app for the iPhone and iPod touch (and iPad, although it’s not a universal app) that features Wi-Fi delivery of your Audible library, iOS 4 multitasking support, detailed listening stats, and more.

Audible includes the basic features one would expect out of an audiobook app, like chapter navigation, bookmarking, and listening and viewing controls, as well as some high end features that should please audiobook enthusiasts—including the ability to transfer books from your Audible library to your iPhone or iPad over Wi-Fi, and a button-free mode that lets you control audio playback using gestures.

The app also includes a sleep timer, and takes advantage of iOS 4’s multitasking support with background audio playback and downloading. It rounds out these core features with some fun extras, like the ability to track your personal listening habits, earn badges for performing certain actions, and get insider information about author events and such with the Audible Newsfeed. You can also connect to Facebook and Twitter to let your friends know what books you’re rocking out to.

For those who aren’t Audible members, the app includes seven audiobook excerpts to help get you interested, and as a bonus, if you create a new, free Audible account in the app, you’ll get a free excerpt of David Kirkpatrick’s The Facebook Effect: The Inside Story of the Company That Is Connecting the World.

Gee where have I been...so Amazon owns audible - another coup. You know I am using that app for my iPad.

I have not tried out that sleep timer. Looks like there are quite a few perks I have not taken advantage of yet.

Michael Flanagan (loboz) Also for you Audible members out there a membership plan they don't advertise. If you have been a member for over a year you can apply for light membership. This membership is only $9.95 a year and does not include credits.

What does it give you if you do not get credits.

message 27: by [deleted user] (new)

Bentley wrote: "What does it give you if you do not get credits."

It enables you to take advantage of their sales, like the last one where you could buy any of a number of selected titles at $4.95 each.

Michael Flanagan (loboz) Tom Clancy Tom Clancy
newest book Dead or Alive by Tom Clancy has been released on Audio format and is causing quite a buzz. The book is narrated by Lou Diamond Phillips of young gun fame. Is it just me or is there some irony in that.

I might have to give a listen, I used to be a huge Clancy fan as a teenager.

Collection Development: Listen to My Life's Story, October 1, 2010

This is from Library Journal

Memoirs offer readers rich evocations of time and place, personal memories made universal, and the pleasures of eavesdropping on another’s life. When memoirs are translated into audiobooks, those pleasures double as the voice of the author is inhabited by a narrator whose job it is to find that story’s soul. Be the narrator an old pro or the author herself, listening to such personal tales becomes an intimate and layered experience. Among these six choices, listeners will find the warm, honey-laden voice of Rick Bragg, Grover Gardner channeling Mark Twain, and many other delights.

Michael Flanagan (loboz) Nice link Bentley very interesting reading I must say. I found a story on why Audio Books sales are on the rise. I think that Itunes and sites like Audible are helping greatly. So much easier to listen to Audio books these days. I dont have to carry around the 12 or so cd's that used to contain unabridged stories.

So true, Michael, and the devices to play them on have grown as well. Now you can put it on your smart phone, although I read somewhere that only 25% of the country have smart phones. However, there are so many other devices out there!
