colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) I'll probably pick up the Dresden short story collection at some point, but that's the only thing that catches my eye.

message 3: by Brenda (new)

Brenda (readingfairytales) I've got Makers and The Spirit Thief on my TBR list, so eventually I'll get to those.

message 4: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (newtomato) All Clear! Blackout has been burning a hole in my TBR, but I've been patiently waiting to read it once All Clear comes out... only a few more weeks, and I'll get started.

I got all excited to see Guy Kay's name on the list - is Under Heaven out in paperback already!?!?!? - but it's just a reprint of a book I already have - how disappointing! ;)

I'll probably pick up Lackey's Intrigues, even though I didn't think Foundation was that great - I can't help it, I'm addicted to her Valdemar books, even though the newer ones haven't been nearly as good as my older favorites!

Ken (ogi8745) | 1450 comments Elegy Beach is a buy, still have to read the first book
The 3rd Covenant chronicles is on the list. I have not read the previous 2, waiting for the 4th book to be annouced and I will reread the whole series and the 3rd Chronicles. I am also going to pick up up the new Wheel of Time book.
I have both the Donaldson and Jordan books on order at my favorite bookstore

message 7: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) Jordan / Sanderson: Towers of Midnight (#13 Wheel of Time)

....that is all...

message 8: by Sandi (new)

Sandi (sandikal) | 338 comments I already have All Clear on order.

message 9: by Phoenixfalls (last edited Sep 28, 2010 08:48PM) (new)

Phoenixfalls | 187 comments SOOOO excited it's October! Several books that I've been drooling over are coming out this month. ;)

Nell Gwynne's Scarlet Spy is already ordered from Amazon. (R.I.P. Ms. Baker. You are missed.)

I always buy Sharon Shinn, so I'm sure I'll pick up Troubled Waters someday soon -- though I may make it a Christmas gift to my mother, and then borrow it as soon as she's done with it.

All Clear will be ordered soon -- then I'll be able to read Blackout (I refuse to read Pt. 1 of 2 novels until I have Pt. 2)

And you missed that Lois McMaster Bujold's first Vorkosigan novel in almost a decade, CryoBurn, had its release date moved up to Oct. 19th!!! (I've been waiting on this one for YEARS.)

Sandi (sandikal) | 338 comments Phoenixfalls wrote: "All Clear will be ordered soon -- then I'll be able to read Blackout (I refuse to read Pt. 1 of 2 novels until I have Pt. 2)"

I've been holding off on reading Blackout too. I heard an interview with Connie Willis where she said that it was written as one book and the publisher split it in two. It's really stupid because a lot of her books are longer than the two installments of this story put together. I guess the publishers are trying anything to make a buck.

message 11: by Kerry (new)

Kerry (rocalisa) | 487 comments I did read Blackout because I couldn't wait, so I'm really looking forward to All Clear.

I've preordered Troubled Waters and CryoBurn.

*squee*

THAT is exciting news...hadn't heard :) Yay!

message 13: by Jon (new)

Jon (jonmoss) I'll be picking up the reissue of Lord of Emperors and finally reading both new Connie Willis novels - Blackout and All Clear.

message 14: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (newtomato) Oh man, there's a HUGE book not on your release list! Surface Detail by Iain M. Banks is the latest in his Culture series. It's out on October 7 in the UK, but October 28 for the US.

message 15: by Phoenixfalls (new)

Phoenixfalls | 187 comments That's right! I have to pick up a copy of Surface Detail too. . . though that will likely be a Christmas present for my dad and then I'll borrow it. ;)

Thanks for letting me know! I get this list from a local bookstore's website, so it's not always complete. I'm glad you mentioned this book though - I'm a big fan of Iain M. Banks and his Culture series. If this one is as good as Matter, we're in for a treat.

message 17: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1141 comments The ARC is already available from Baen Books for free. I just downloaded it. They have formats to be read on any ereader. That's of CryoBurn, just thought I should clarify.

Sleo, I couldn't find CryoBurn on Baen

Ken (ogi8745) | 1450 comments Man, I have to add Surface Detail to the list, and I really need to get off my duff and read the other Culture Novels. I read the first but nothing else

Ah Ken, you really have to get The Player of Games as soon as possible then! Consider Phlebas is easily the worst of the bunch - after that they get excellent with The Player of Games and Use of Weapons.

It's right on the front page. Meanwhile Random has the link.

Here's the front page. It's blinking on the right.

Ken (ogi8745) | 1450 comments I have them all except for Matter and the new one

The electronic version is free.

But at the bottom page it says
Ebook Price: $15.00

If you just go to the page and click on the kind of file you want, it downloads. There is no charge. Maybe it's going to be 15 for the completed book.

message 28: by Bryan (new)

Bryan (blyoung) | 6 comments Sorry, but I am sure that Baen does not give away their e-ARC's for free. When I visit the site, I can get the first few chapters for free (in HTML format only, no other choices).

If you can see other choices, then you must have bought the book, or been given a free subscription.

I've bought perhaps 30 books on Baen, plus I've downloaded every single one of the free library books. So I hope I know what I'm talking about...

message 29: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1141 comments Ooops. You're right. I bought it a while ago. Sorry.

I am intrigued, what don't you like about "Consider Phlebas", I found it one if not the most exciting novel I have ever read.

I'm not saying it's a bad book - I just consider it the least good book in the series. I felt that it was a bit of mess in terms of structure, and didn't have the same level of tension as the later books. I also thought the scene with the Eaters was one of the most disgusting things I've ever read. We had it as our Book of the Month not so long ago - if you do a search you can probably find the discussion. I always felt like CP was a book you have to get through to get to the really good books in the series - and I know at least a few people who unfortunately gave up on Banks after reading it.

I was one. I just haven't been able to motivate myself to giving him another chance.

For myself it was just a book version of an action movie. Lots of explosions, etc and not much else. Its like covering styrofoam with salt and butter and calling it popcorn. *blech*

Random, I really do recommend checking out The Player of Games and Use of Weapons before giving up. It's unbelievable how much better those books are - they're 2 of my favorite SF novels ever.

message 35: by Random (last edited Oct 01, 2010 11:05AM) (new)

Random (rand0m1s) | 1277 comments I've considered it, but just can't get the motivation. It doesn't help that while I love Sci-Fi, I rather dislike Space Opera.

My husband threatens divorce every time I say that. :)

I grant you it did read like an action movie. On the minus side it did not tackle the grey matter as frankly I can't remember much but the action.

message 37: by Sandi (new)

Sandi (sandikal) | 338 comments I almost missed that Side Jobs: Stories From the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher is coming out. It'll be good filler while waiting for the next Dresden Files novel to come out in Spring.

By the way, do not read the blurb for the next Dresden Files novel if you have not read Changes. It's a huge spoiler for Changes

Baker, Banks, Sanderson/Jordan, Lackey, Bujold... yikes, my list is getting longer and longer!

message 39: by Candiss (new)

Candiss (tantara) | 1207 comments I'd like to pick up a copy of the Ted Chiang collection now that it will be easier to find (and cost less than an arm, leg, and firstborn.) It's one of my favorites, and I could kick myself for not grabbing it when it was first out in hardcover, before it became scarce.

I just received a review copy of it. Apparently this version is much closer to how the author originally wanted it. I'm planning to read it soon - it looks excellent.

Cindy (newtomato) I preordered my copy of the Chiang collection - I'm stoked!
