Following in the footsteps of Sebastian Faulks (Devil May Care), Jeffery Deaver has been commissioned by the Ian Fleming estate to write a new 007 novel (out May 2011). How do you think Deaver will handle the task?

I am a bit bias becuase I enjoy everything Deaver writes so I expect this to be amazing, but I am also a long time fan of James Bond. I will say this, the people who commissioned him would not have done it if they didn't have the fullest confidence in him. He already wrote the foreword for Casino Royal so he is familiar with the style and character. I can't wait to read this new chapter in the Bond legacy and I am even more excited that it is Deaver writting it.
looking forward to it, intrigued by what Mr Deaver's take on the Bond franchise will be. I understand that it is to be based in modern day, unlike the Faulks' version which was written to try and emulate a Fleming book in style, date and substance.And with Mr Deaver's love of multiple twists, it should be an interesting read.
I just finished reading Carte Blanche and the book lives up to the expectations I had. A good story set in modern times, the mandatory multiple twists and quite a lot of well researched details. I enjoyed reading the book and for me it is a solid 4 stars.
Bought my copy pre order from amazon and I will finally start it this week. I'll let you all know what I think as soon as I finish.
This is not Ian Fleming's Bond which will probably upset Bond aficionados. But this is a good fun read. Jeffrey Deaver brings 007 into the 21st Century: a new car, first a Bentley Continental GT then a Subaru Impreza WRX STI; a new drink, Carte Blanche; a new villain, Felicity Willing. Ian Fleming purists will gasp but Jeffrey Deaver followers will be delighted in this devious thriller.
Carte Blanche is the first and only Bond novel I read so the new interpretation of the character could not disturb me.I also liked the background of Felicity Willing as it is a scenario not as worn out as most stories in other spy books or movies.
I am only half way through it so far and I love it. I have read a few Ian Flemming novels and Deaver's Bond does have quite a few similarities. However, Deaver did what any writer should and that is make the character his own. It is hard to write a character someone else created and I think Deaver did an amazing job keeping it true but giving it his own twist. Can't wait to finish and really say how I thought it was.

I was not going to let this post get to me but as I come on my last 30 pages or so I am really upset that the big twist of the book was ruined for me due to your post. I am a member of several other discussion groups and we always mark Spoilers. I ask that you edit your post so it is not ruined for someone else. and please keep future posts free of spoilers, or clearly mark them so someone like myself, who was half way through the book when I read your post, from ruining an ending. The truth of Felicity being "the Villain" was something I would have rather found out on my own.
Deaver is coming to Germany to promote the German Carte Blanche translation (to be released in February). Just got my tickets for one of his readings and I am realy looking forward to meeting him in person (and tasting the Carte Blanche cocktail which will be served during the event ;-)!
I met Mr. Deaver in person for the first time in person last summer. He is a great guy and I have had the pleasure of emailing him back and forth from time to time. Like I said, he is a great guy and very friendly. Enjoy your event!! Let us know how the cocktail is.
