I didn't realize The Hunger Games got banned.
What was sexually explicit? I get the violence angle.

message 8: by Barbara ★ (new)

Barbara ★ I'm not sure as the website listed above doesn't list the reason.

There was a reason. It said sexually explicit and violent.

message 10: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 13 comments Explicit? Nothing was explicit in THG, at least not the first book (which is the only one I've read thus far).

Then again, Gatsby got banned on sex grounds and there was next to nothing about sex in that book.

They don't even talk about sex in the first book. People don't even read these books before they ban them.

Barbara ★ Finished Grendel by John Gardner . What a terrible book! It's something you might enjoy if you were an English teacher or a perpetual student. Too much work to decipher.

Haha. I hate when you read a book and think that. I felt that way about A Wrinkle in Time.

message 15: by Barbara ★ (new)

Barbara ★ I liked A Wrinkle in Time when I was a kid but reread it last year (?) and hated it. Go figure.

I wrote my grade 3-4 teacher and 5-6 teacher e-mails saying thank you for not having tortured me with Wrinkle back in elementary after having read the story. They both essentially said the same thing - they didn't want to torture themselves either. Then told me I was lucky I ended up in the advance classes, because back then everyone else was stuck reading it.

message 17: by Barbara ★ (new)

Barbara ★ I tried to read Shade's Children by Garth Nix (#95 on the list) and gave up 1/3 of the way. I don't particularly like dystopian and this one was incredibly boring. It just couldn't keep my attention. I guess it could be because I'm working too hard and nothing I'm reading is working for me right now. Oh well.
