Has anyone had a bad experience publishing on Kindle? I found that some of the services that offer conversions did a really bad job. My book has a bunch of illustrations and no one was properly converting. I ended up doing it myself. I found that correctly converting took a long time and some research, but in the end it looks perfect and was worth it. If you click on the link below I posted a preview of parts of the first chapter in epub format.

Erin Lale (erinlale) | 11 comments I just upload a straight doc file to the DTP side and it converts fine; I can see what it looks like in the preview, so I can tell if something needs to be fixed, but so far nothing has. But I don't put a lot of funny formatting in my books, either. For example, when I reprinted a couple of academic papers in Polymath, the papers originally had footnotes with superscripts, but I changed that to plain text, and I don't have any special alphabetical signs in Asatru For Beginners even though it has a lot of foreign words in it. I just leave that stuff out, and it comes out fine.

My husband converted 2 of my books to Kindle with no problem. He did the original PDF using Aaron Shepherd's book "Perfect Pages" about formatting in Word for POD. He then got further instruction from Shepherd's website about doing the Kindle version from what he did. There are graphics in my books, including a map and illustrations as chapter headers. There is a way to import them into the PDF and Shepherd does talk about how to do so.
