Kate | 2 comments A recently I read a collection of older science fiction short stories. One of them has stuck in my mind, but I can't remember the title or author. An older lawyer goes on a fishing trip to his old fishing hole and notices that a house has been built along the river. He is upset that the natural beauty of the area was ruined by the house but continues on his way to fish. He ends up getting hurt and makes his way to the house. When he gets there, there is food on the table, medicine, and a bed, but no people around. The house basically takes care of him, and it ends by the man discovering that he is being asked to help define laws for the universe of inhabited planets.

Debbie Moorhouse This is "New Folks' Home" by Clifford Simak.

I have it in Analog 3, edited by John W. Campbell, published by Panther in 1968, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's also been collected elsewhere.
