Gene Abercrombie | 3 comments Hi, I am new to this group and am looking for the best book on the aftermath of the war and Reconstruction. Although I have read a lot on the war itself, I have always wanted to read about the period after the war.

Thanks for any recommendations.

Larry Van Valkenburgh (larryvv) | 1 comments I think a good first book is Eric Foner's "Forever Free - The Story of Emancipation and Reconstruction" It's a very readable and modern introduction to the topic by one of the leading historians on reconstruction.
Forever Free The Story of Emancipation and Reconstruction by Eric Foner

From there you might look at Foner's more academic treatment: Reconstruction: America's Unfinished Revolution 1863-1877
