valee Plot
In this made-for-TV adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel, Emma Woodhouse (Kate Beckinsale) is a clever young woman from a wealthy family who fancies herself a matchmaker and tries to find a husband for her shy friend Harriet (Samantha Morton). However, Emma's skills in bringing romances together are not all she imagines them to be, which causes no small annoyance for Harriet. What's more, Emma's interest in the affairs of others nearly causes her to miss out on the love of her life.

Olivia Williams - Jane Fairfax
Bernard Hepton
Dominic Rowan
Prunella Scales - Mrs. Bates
Mark Strong - Mr. Knightley
Raymond Coulthard - Frank Churchill

valee Just watched this movie for the third time and still love it. I must admit it is not of my favs because I hate sometimes how Emma behaves, but that makes me love even more how Knightly reacts at it,lol.

This is the only version I have watched so far.

Mariel (fuchsiagroan) I was disappointed that Mark Strong played Mr. Knightley as a more Mr. Darcy type. Where was his sense of humor? (These days I'm loving Mark Strong as the baddie in a lot of big films such as Kick-Ass, Sherlock Holmes and Stardust.)

Kate Beckinsale and Samantha Morton (my favorite actress ever) were wonderful as Emma and Harriet, though. I remember reading that Beckinsale was a big fan of the modern Emma adaptation Clueless. Me too!

valee I haven't read the book yet, but I liked it a lot how he played it. He was really serious though, not sense of humor at all, you're right with that. But I still loved it.

Did you like more the book or the movie? It sounds as if the book is much better.

Katherine I love this version of Emma, I own it and watch it at least every year. I like Mark Strong as Mr. Knightley better than the other movie Mr. Knightley's. Though I probably need to go to the book and read a discription of him because all the other Mr. Knightley's seem short.

I just watched "The Young Victoria" and Mark Strong played Sir John and did a great job of being bad.

I personally am not that keen on this one. Knightley is played far to serious !!!!
Emma is good and I don't hate this one I just don't think Knightley was at all like he was meant to be :) love the banter between them which wasn't as fun on this version...
Recommend the latest 2009 one and the 1996 Paltrow one :)

Anna (SylviaGrant) | 139 comments Yes, I found Mr. Knightley to be more like a mixture of Frank Churchill and Mr. Darcy which is totally wrong because he is such a sweetheart and a great judge on character and this one didn't really bring him out properly...he was much more dark and not much of a good guy character.

Stephanie (stephanie-jo) | 111 comments I haven't seen this version. I just finished watching the first 2 discs of the BBC version from 2010. I just now have to hope that the library has the other 2 discs so I can finish it. I really need to read the book again....I forgot some parts and want to read it again as well.

I agree!! I love that version!! I am in fact watching it right at this very moment!!! It is worth watching sometime. But it is my least favourite. Knightley is too serious in that one for me.

Anne (cinderella16) | 115 comments I really didn't like this version. I thought that Kate Beckinsale made Emma very unlikeable. I mean yes, Emma was supposed to be spoiled and somewhat snobbish, but I thought that Kate Beckinsale almost made her cruel. And I don't think she was like that.

@Stephanie: You should definitly find the rest of the BBC mini-series. I absolutley love it. It's my favorite movie. Period.

Anne (cinderella16) | 115 comments I know, was it not amazing! I could watch it over and over.

Anna (SylviaGrant) | 139 comments I'll watch it again when I have the chance. I should watch it and write all my book's author's notes. It would be doing two things at once but it will be great.

I did enjoy it more the second time or third time I watched it. But I still find Mark Strong to serious and I think Jeramy Nortam is my Knightley ... <3

message 18: by Anna (new)

Anna (SylviaGrant) | 139 comments Jonny Lee Miller is so much more lovable and handsome and clever and plus he has his brother in this one. John Knightley is a quite likable guy!!

message 19: by Anne (new)

Anne (cinderella16) | 115 comments I agree completely. And I absolutely loved John!

message 20: by Anna (new)

Anna (SylviaGrant) | 139 comments Me too!!! I just love him the best of all Mr. Knightleys!!!

I meant out of the films he is my Knightley ;) love Miller as well and John is such a great character!!

message 22: by Anna (new)

Anna (SylviaGrant) | 139 comments I know. He has such a delightful character and personality which makes up for the lack of a nice man in Frank Churchill but don't even get me started on Frank.
