Advice on Ending

I need some advice on the ending. There's these two rival groups in my story and they get into a battle. Well, the main character gets thrown over a cliff and his wife thinks he's dead. That's the third-to-last chapter of the book. The second to last chapter is the group going back home. At the end of the last chapter of the book, should the main character come back or should I just have the wife go on thinking he's dead, and she gets a new husband?

Endings are hard, to state the obvious. I tend to like the bittersweet or tragic ones more, but I always feel like I owe my characters a happy ending after what I put them through. *guilty laugh*

I never reach endings, so I'm not sure how I like to end my stories. Most likely chance of me killing off everybody but the main character and then the main character commits suicide...

Hehe at the end of my NaNo last year, my main character died. And it was in first person.
