It will suck you in like a black hole. Ethan is HOT like Roarke or Curran. He's not alone. Merit and Malory are SNARKY. It's one of the few series I've reread (when there is so much to read I rarely reread) and the last book was PRIMO!

JESSICA ~Snuggly Bear Paws~ (brenian) YA PNR -
Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead
Vampire Kisses by Ellen Schreiber
Blue Bloods by Melissa de La Cruz

Adult PNR -
Midnight Breed Series by Lara Adrian
The Darkyn Series by Lynn Veihl
The Monere Series by Sunny
The Demon Princess Chronicles by Sunny
-- Lords of the Underworld is my next Series to read.

Truth being I had never heard of Sunny before. If I actually buy my books instead of going to the library cause I'm impatient, "Hello Borders".... I look for a cover that catches my eye. I wasn't disappointed.

Jen ~The dreamer~ | 649 comments Chicagoland Vampires....is it YA?

message 29: by ൠSinful (last edited Jul 22, 2010 06:18AM) (new)

ൠSinful (sinful) | 118 comments Jen wrote: "Chicagoland Vampires....is it YA?"

Not YA.
Chloe Neill, the author, says the first two books are PG. That being said, Merit's roommate, Mallory, and the love interest Mallory quickly finds in book 1 do it all night long- loud and everywhere. It drives Merit crazy. For that reason alone I don't recommend it to friends who are under 16. The author rated the last book R.
Ms. Neill's voice is fun, but not YA. I think of Gilmore Girls when I read it. It is intelligent humor as opposed to simplistic minded humor. The author even calls her blog "The Daily Snark". The issues are very adult. The character is 28ish and a grad student in English when the series begins.

The story is about: 1. Merit losing the life she had planned for herself and the fact that she wasn't given a choice to become a vampire. 2. The kind of vampire she is going to be, the new future she chooses for herself and how that bucks the norm for vampire and human stereotypes. 3. Merit's relationship with her past. ie. she can't stand her socialite family and has lost contact with her school time friends. Situtions arise that force her to confront those she has avoided. 4. Politics. Vampire politics, Chicago politics, family politics....5. Love. Unhealthy love and love that makes you stronger than you were alone.

Book 1 sets up the series. You learn about vampire houses and Merit must make a choice to join her house or go rogue.
Book 2 She tries to help the vampires and in doing so must step back into the chicago society.
Book 3 The shifters come to town to decide to go public or not. She is part of the protection detail. Lots of politics and lots of treachory again. And her love life starts to boil over.

Hope that helps for those who have yet to try this series. :)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 2659 comments Mod
Ok, my #1 is of course, The Man himself--Harry Dresden. Chicago's only Professional Wizard and P.I.

#2 Southern Vampire series (aka Sookie Stackhouse series, True Blood, and, my personal fav. The hot, HOT HOT Eric Northman series.) :o)

#3 Mercy Thompson series--I'm including the Alpha and Omega series in this, since there is a great deal of overlap between the characters involved.

after these 3, it gets hard. Kitty the Werewolf series is good. As is Riley Jensen. And I've just started (have finished book 1 only) Dante Valentine.

Then for the lighter stuff there's:

The Pride/Pack (or Pack/Pride) series of Shelly Laurenston,
the Argeneau Vamps,
the Vegas Vamps,
Linda Wisdom's series about 13 witches who, as children back in 1300 or so were kicked out of the Witch Academy and are now forced to live on what they'd learned up til then and their wits.
Christine Warren's "The Others" series
Sandra Hills wonderfully delightful timetraveling Vikings series

and, and, and. . . Oh dear, there are just too many to mention. How about we just name our top FIFTY favourites???? ;oP

Immortals After Dark by K. Cole

A few for some of you to consider...
Black Jewels by A. Bishop (magicals???)

Dorina Bassarb by K. Chance (vamps)

message 41: by Laura Lulu (new)

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) Sheila, I agree about Elizabeth Vaughan's Chronicles of the Warlands series, I thought they were great.

And JD, if we were making a top 10, Black Jewels, Cassie Palmer, Dorina Basarab & Sevenwaters would make the list. Black Jewels & Sevenwaters are more fantasy than PNR or UF, but I'm a big fan of straight fantasy too.

Another awesome fantasy series is George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice & Fire. One of my faves.
